Buy the old version on EBAY because it's vastly superior to this new model!
Save your money and buy the old version on EBAY! I always read Amazon reviews before I purchase items, unless I am making a repeat purchase. When I bought this Leap Frog "My Own Leaptop" in June, 2017, I realized it was a newer version than the one I purchased in 2012, but I figured they would have simply made improvements upon the old model. Wow was I mistaken! I should have read the recent reviews by parents like myself who know how fantastic the old version of this toy is and how the new version pales in comparison. Don't waste your money on a new one. For the same price or less you can buy a vastly superior, used old version on EBAY (see what the old version looks like in my review photos). This is what I did and I will be returning the new model. We debated saving the $6 in return shipping cost to give the new version we bought to someone else as a gift, but decided we cannot in good conscience give an inferior toy to a friend. The old version requires that you download LeapFrog Connect software and connect the Leaptop to your computer. To do this you must have the LeapFrog "My Own Leaptop" USB connector cable (see last photo), internet access, a USB port, and Adobe Flash software (an easy, free download that the LeapFrog software prompts you to download if you don't have it). I still had my cable from the Leaptop I purchased five years ago so I didn't need to make sure the used one I purchased from EBAY had it. I bought the used leaptop shown in the photos for $8 with free shipping and no cable. It arrived today and with new batteries and my old cable I was able to reprogram each of the customizable features and now it's perfect! Below is a comparison of the personalized features of the old version and comparable features of the new version. Old Version: - Upon turning it on it says, "Hi [says your child's name]!" - You can select one "sing along" song, and five melody songs for it to play, and it also plays a song spelling out your child's name - When you push the "blog" button, it reads a blog entry and then asks your child [by name] about their day - You can personalize three "email" messages by selecting text from a dropdown menu (you cannot type your own message) and entering the sender (e.g., "Grandma" or "Betsy"). The result is an interaction like this: "You have an email from Mommy [or whomever you program in]. Let's read it! Dear [says your child's name], I love you so much [the message I chose]. Love, Mommy. Let's reply! Dear Mommy, I love you too. Love, [says your child's name]". So it simply reads an auto-generated "reply" and says it is from your child, rather than prompting them to "type a reply." The Leaptop also periodically prompts your child to push the email button, by asking, "Have you checked your email?" - In the alphabet mode when your child pushes the first letter of their name it will switch between one of two results. One result is this announcement: "[First it names the letter.] That's the first letter of your name [says child's name]. Let's celebrate your letter! [Then it plays a fun little jingle.]" The second result is an announcement naming the letter, saying what sound it makes, naming the letter again and saying an animal that starts with that letter. New Version: - Upon turning it on it says, "Hi." - You cannot select songs. You get what it comes with. - There are no blog entries. - When you select the "Messages" setting it literally says something like this: "I have a message for you. Message: I spent all day... What's your favorite [game/place]?" or "You have an email from me. Let's read it. Hi. Writing emails to you makes me happy. Love, [Scout or Violet, depending on whether you have the boy or girl version] Let's reply. Push the letter buttons to write your reply, then push the paw pad." When you do as instructed it says out loud each letter you push, and then says, "Well done," but that's it. So you could push, "JWZL," for example, and push the paw pad and that would be your email. It doesn't read the reply you type (which makes sense since most children will push letters randomly). - There are no blog entries. - In the alphabet mode when your child pushes the first letter of their name it will switch between one of two results. One result is this announcement: "[First it names the letter.] That's the first letter of your name [it shows child's name on screen, but does not say it]. Let's spell it! [Then it spells your child's name.]" The second result is an announcement naming the letter, saying what sound it makes, naming the letter again and saying an animal that starts with that letter. We gave the Leaptop we purchased in 2012 to our son when he was 18 months old. He is now 6 and he still loves to play with it. Our daughter who is about to turn 3 enjoys playing with her brother's Leaptop so much we finally decided we should get her one of her own (hence our purchase and return of a new version on Amazon, and a satisfying purchase of a used old version on EBAY). Reasons why we like the old version follow. Both of our children really like singing and dancing to the music and playing at receiving and writing emails. They also get very excited about the blog entries. Neither one of them has ever been too enamored by the facts about animals (although they both are very interested in animals in general), with the exception of a few favorites. I do think the letter sounds have been valuable from an education standpoint for both of our children. The main reason our children, and in turn we ourselves, like the old version of this toy so much is because it engages them directly by name so frequently through the alphabet, music, email and blog modes. The new version simply acknowledges the first letter of their name and the spelling of their name, but never actually says their name. This makes it so much less personally engaging and since younger children do not always know how to spell their names, the new version may as well not be personalized at all for them since it never actually states their name. We brought our 2012 Leaptop every time we traveled with our son from about age 18 months to 3 years. His interest waned enough after that that we no longer brought it on travels, but it remains a much beloved toy for home use to this day. We are extremely confident that the used old version of the Leaptop we just bought our daughter is sure to be her new favorite toy. I hope this review is helpful to parents considering buying a Leaptop. I cannot recommend the old version enough and I'm grateful there are people selling quite a few of them on EBAY. Just keep in mind to look for one that indicates it has been tested and is in good working order, and that it includes the cable if you don't have one already.

Happy with LeapTop Violet
We recently bought our 2 and a half year old daughter the LeapTop0 Violet and overall we are very happy and satisfied with the toy and with our purchase. Originally, I wanted to purchase the Scout version so that after my daughter outgrew the toy, my son, (just 5 months old) will be able to play with it as well. I don't know why, but the Violet version is actually cheaper by a dollar so I chose it. I'm giving this toy a five star mostly because my daughter loves it so much and I feel that she is learning from it as well. However, despite all of its great qualities, I think the design could still use a few improvements. Here are some positive and negative points: Appearance and Exterior Design: It is cute and attractive to me and to my baby girl. I love that it's purple and pink, I think it is just girl enough without having to resort to princesses or Barbie. She loves dogs and she likes the little paw print mark on the front when it's flipped close. She also likes able opening and closing it and carrying it around the house by the handle. It is light weight but thick enough to be durable. Of course, she has dropped it a few times already, but so far no harm done. The Keyboard: When you flip it open, all the buttons are just the right size for little fingers. The keys are purple and the letters on them are white, (good contrast) Also the alphabet is all upper case, which I like because that is what she knows right now. She likes pushing the pink mouse up and down. The mouse changes the modes between letters, music and animals. Sound Quality: The speaker is right above the keys and the sound is very clear whether it is music or sounds being played or Violet's voice speaking or the male narrator saying the letters and their corresponding sounds. The on/off switch also serves as the low and high volume setting switch. Violet, (the little dog character) has a kid-like friendly and upbeat voice. Unfortunately, when it is on the animal mode and you press the J, it will say "Who has kenticles? Jelly fish." Hopefully LeapFrog will catch this error and fix it for others.. Being Able to Personalize: It was no hassle at all to download the application onto my computer, hook up the LeapTop with the included USB cable and personalize. In a few minutes I was able to add my daughter's name, select for her some music and add preset emails from me, her dad and her baby brother. With this said, it would have been nice to have a bigger selection of music. They let you choose just one sing-a-long song (basically a song with words) out of 5 in total, and you have a choice of 5 melodies out of the 15 or 20 they have. Really, it felt very limiting not to have a bigger variety. This same sentiment also goes for the emails. Basically you have three different emails to add on. You get to choose the sender; Mommy Daddy, other family relations such Aunt, Grandpa, etc or just a name, then you get to choose out of a short list a sentence that you want that email to contain. It would have been very nice to have a longer list of email content, and more importantly, why only three personalized emails. I would have preferred more emails from people she knows and less emails from Violet. Really, the personalization aspect is an excellent idea and LeapFrog could have been just a little more creative about it. Educational Value: I have been trying to get my daughter to answer "What's your name?" correctly and I like that Violet will says her name when she turns this on and as she plays with it. It will even say "That's the first letter of your name" when she presses the A. She does know her letters, but she doesn't know their sounds, and I am happy that she is mimicking the narrator when he says "L says lll L - lion" Fun Factor: She loves singing along with the ABC song and dancing to the other music. She smiles at the animation. She also enjoys hearing and seeing different animals. Her favorite right now is the Bumble Bee and the Umbrella Bird. She will press the B and the U repeatedly just to see the animals on the screen and to repeat the words. She also enjoys making interesting, quirky sounds on the music mode. Screen and Animation: Really, if my daughter wasn't having so much fun with this toy, I would take off two stars because of the screen. Firstly, I don't understand why the screen has to be so small. Would it really cost so much more to add an inch? Secondly, it is difficult to see. My daughter doesn't seem to mind so much, but the images are supper light. A little more contrast would have gone a long way. The animations are simplistic, but captivating and fun enough for a toddler. I just hate that this is such a great toy but the screen design was not well thought of at all. Overall, we are happy we bought the LeapTop Violet for our daughter. The flaws are not a big deal when she is having so much fun playing and learning with this toy. It was a good buy for the price. I would recommend this for other toddlers, but I would warn about the screen.

Fantastic learning tool! AAAA+++
This is a very good toy. It is fun and you learn with it. I bought it for my two year old son and he adores it. You connect it to a computer and write the name of your child say Romeo. so each time you turn it on it says "Hello Romeo" you don't choose from pre-set names, you write whatever your child is known as say Sammy, Johnie, Kiki, Nikki, or any short cut name. It allows you to make that choice, so it makes the toy so personal for your child. It calls his name now and then. The email too is a brilliant idea. as we listen to the emails I composed to my son. he just beams with excitement! It is a good toy both for fun and learning. You learn have 26 alphabets with different 26 sounds of any musical instrument, 26 different sounds of different animals, 26 names of animals that begin with each letter of the alphabet and some music. How brilliant! and it celebrates the letter that begins with your child's name. The battery life is also good. It takes only 2 small batteries and really lasts. my little boy adores it and i think is a very good bargain and worth every penny. No regrets.

Focused on educating the child
Pros: A range of features, all focused on educating the child. Very intuitive for the child to use. Very good build quality. It looks like it will not break easily, if kids drop it. Good audio with adjustable volume. Cons: The screen backlight is not bright enough. In normal daylight, it appears too dim. The product is from USA. So the words and the concepts used are American. It may not be easy for Indian toddlers to follow. Considering the product's price, a colour screen would have been better, in this day and age.

Annoyed about the lack of names
I read around a few laptops before deciding to purchase this Leaptop. I bought it in Pink for my daughters 1 year birthday as she adores my laptop and I thought it would be a good distraction whilst I use mine. I decided on this one due to the reasonable price and good reviews. After 1 day I can see it is very durable because my daughter has been throwing it off the sofa onto the floor without anything breaking. The screen is small but more annoyingly has no colour only black and grey which I notice most toys have but I would've preferred a colour-screen to keep her attention. The most annoying part was that I could not put her name into the Leaptop when I personalised it as the Leaptop is restricted to only saying a few names of whcih my daughter's was not one. It does have may of the common names but would've been nice if there was a way to perhaps the audio of my daughters name so it could refer to her by name as opposed to just writing her name on the screen as she cannot read yet. Other than that it is good but the personalisation is less fantastic than I thought it would be. I ordered this on Sunday and received it Tuesday so great service from Amazon of course.

Good lappy for kids!
This is the second one I have got and definitely it's a good product and helpful for children so I got it for my younger daughter of 15months. Though I feel the size could have been little increased then the previous one but as long as the children are learning from it and are engaged in a good activity, I recommend it.
