Great for someone needing light especially in the winter.
I typically get depressed in winter after a few successive cloudy days. I began using this light every morning for about 20 minutes and noticed a difference in how I was feeling within a few days of use. Maybe it is psychosomatic but it certainly seems to work!

Almost perfect
Works great and I believe it really helps with the winter downer feeling. The only drawback, which I don't consider a deal breaker, is the stand is not as stable as I would like it to be. It's fairly easy to tip over.

Even my cat loves it!
I did a lot of research and landed on this one because you have 14" of distance instead of 6" like most other lamps. It is a bit big and bulky, but has been a game-changer for me! I sit in front of it every morning between 30 -60 mins and now my cat has started laying in front of it too. If an animal laying in front of it isn't the best endorsement I don't know what is! If you're feeling down and out and need some sunshine, this light will make you feel brighter!

Not worth the price
First issue was when I opened the box, it was obvious one of the lights had come loose from its socket. You would think it'd be an easy fix: just unscrew the 4 screws and plug the light back in. It wasn't. The screws are plastic so they don't grip properly in the holes. I spent a good 30 minutes trying different ways to unscrew the cover. When I finally succeeded, it took a bit of maneuvering to get the light back in its socket and playing around with the clip that holds it. After plugging in the lamp, it started making a banging noise. It was from the lights heating the metal frame. This goes on for at least 15 minutes and then again when you power off the unit. If you're using the lamp first thing in the morning in a quiet room, like I am, it's very distracting and not calming at all. It's still too early to determine if the actual light therapy has had any positive effects but the other issues make this lamp not worth the price. If it was a $50 product, it'd be worth it.

Useful in winter for short daylight and for shortening effects of jet-lag
I spend time on both sides of the Atlantic and have had a light like this one overseas that has proven effective for years. So i wanted one in the usa, where i got “stuck” due to Covid that was similarly large though i’ve never tried small ones. i opted for this (more expensive than alternatives) option because the specs were slightly better and because it is made in north america (canada, i believe). I was bit disappointed because the unit arrived missing its foot bracket, hence a 4 rather than 5 star review. A call to the service number included and a week later i had it in the mail. Fits easily and functions well.

The screw is white plastic. Bright lamp!
The screw is misleading and I think that's why some reviewers thought the screw was missing. It is the white plastic screw that comes attached on the base of the light box. Unscrew it and place the metal stand on the box. Tighten the screw in place with a coin. Be careful because the edges of the box are very sharp. This is my second day using this light box. I couldn't tell much on the first day. Then I realized that you need to be 17" from the light box. That is really close! I pulled out the tape measure and discovered it's much closer than is shown in that picture of the guy sitting at his desk. Now I'm sitting really close to the lamp while on my phone checking emails, and periodically changing my position so that both sides of my face have the advantage of being near the lamp. The instructions say not to look into the lamp very often...especially if you have light colored eyes (blue or green). So, I just take a quick glance every once in a while. So far I'm feeling like I have more energy...but I also drank caffeinated tea. So I can't say for sure. But, I do like the brightness of the light. It lights up the room pretty well, which is nice since I live in Portland, OR and it's always cloudy and raining, which keeps my home dimly light. Though, it's probably not a good idea to keep this light box on for very long periods of time since the instructions say that after 20,000 hours of use it will emit 15% less light, and should be replaced. It uses two 36 watt tubes that can be purchased from Northern Light Technologies. Oh one other thing...when you first turn on the light box it takes about three seconds before it turns on. Make sure to turn your head and look away from it because it's BRIGHT! I made the mistake of turning my head back towards the light box right when it turned on and almost fell over in shock. It's bright! ...can also be used for lighting up stuff you're trying to photograph.

Didn't work at first. Had to fix.
This was an expensive item which had been highly recommended by the Wirecutter column in the New York Times. There were cheaper models but this one was described as being the most stylish and elegant looking. It was a gift, so I ordered it. Upon opening on Christmas morning, my wife was very excited and promptly and plugged it in. It didn't work! We read the instruction sheet which suggested trying another outlet and if that didn't work, then remove the cover and check the bulbs. It still didn't work with another electrical outlet, so I removed the cover and it was obvious that the problem was due to one bulb having become completely free of the socket (presumably during shipping). Due to the very tight fit, I spent close to an hour and finally managed to maneuver the bulb into the socket. It was not easy to screw the cover back on. The cover had to be bent very slightly so that the holes on the cover and light case overlapped for the four screws. Finally, we plugged it in and....it worked perfectly. Be forewarned, if you order this item be prepared to have a similar experience to mine. This is not an item for someone who is not comfortable doing what I did. I was surprised at the number of Amazon comments that also had bulbs which came free from the socket. Doesn't anyone from the company read these remarks?

It's a very bright light but it's also bigger and bulkier than advertised.
Word of warning - this is not a discrete light as the angled image of this unit suggests, it's much bigger and bulkier than it looks in the picture. While I wouldn't necessarily accuse the manufacturer of false advertising, it's closer to 3" deep if you actually measure it and not 2.5" deep as advertised. It seems like a well built, sturdy light and it's very, very bright. The question is, did I really need this if I sit in front of three monitors working every day? In retrospect I should have considered that I have bright lights in front of me all day as this bright light doesn't seem to be doing much for me. However if you want a super bright light on your desk and you have a lot of room then this should do the trick.
