Sturdy Bench Vise

This appears to be a pretty strong vise for the money. It is packed in grease soaked plastic for rust protection, so the first thing you need to do is clean that gunk off - no problem. I had a test of its durability the day I brought it home when I was trying to figure out placement on my workbench... I opened the jaws as wide as they could go with the bulk of the vise hanging over the edge - the way I wanted to mount it. I took my hand off to reach for the tape measure and it fell right off the bench and hit the concrete floor (doh!). A piece of my concrete garage floor chipped when the vise hit it but the vise was fine. In fact, it hit the ground on the "leg" where the bolt goes and I know if it were made of cheap iron, it would have cracked or broken off. Thankfully it didn't and I got mounted up just fine. The only complaint is that it has three mounting holes instead of four... I don't quite understand the thinking there. Otherwise good product from Irwin.

mislead by picture

The picture of the vise on the sales site mislead me to purchase this product. The jaws are clearly shown as being able to rotate, not so on the vise I received. The price I paid was based on the product shown not the vise I received.

You don't get what is pictured

I thought I was ordering the vise that is pictured. This was not however the vise I received. Pictured was a vise on a swivel base. I received something totally different. I received a vise but one with a fixed base. This is the first time I have had any problems with products on Amazon. Hopefully they will fix the picture for this item.

Okay for the price it's at.

Broke my very old No.6 and needed a replacement but was feeling cheap, this little jobby has been in my shed a few years now and it's perfectly okay at the price I paid and still going strong, but the close is not as smooth, nor is the casting quite as good on the whole (if I were to be picky). Wish i'd just spent more on a good second hand engineers vice really!

Yes & No..

When you buy IRWIN/RECORD vices which are the best, you should have it badged as such surely?? Ordered 2 which arrived promptly, disappointed one of them wasn't badged..Needed to use them otherwise it was going back. Other than that a quality product.

Cheap and nasty in all honesty.

You may be disappointed with this vice made by Irwin Record. A new 3 inch jaw width purchased here. Very sloppy fits all round. Moving jaw in static body very loose, as is the spindle in the nut and moving jaw. Having cleaned all the lose paint and muck out of the moving parts it now sounds much better. Yes it will do the job but if you are looking for a precision made vice with no slop, don't buy this. For just under £28-00 including postage, I cannot complain as I could not make one myself for less, or even anywhere near that. As I said before, it will do the job. Having added some brass shim, the slop has gone. Not pretty but a better job now.

Does the job

For the money (bought on a discount) its ok. The closing is a bit notchy, but opens ok. Possibly the end stop causing this. I have some old Record vices circa 1975 and older and this is just not as well made. No oiling point either.
