Outstanding bang for your buck.
My Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer Oven Review I ordered this air fryer on 09/11/2022 and received it on 09/16/2022. I had been reading a lot of good things about air fryers and had been toying with the idea of getting one for myself. I thought the 6 quart model would be just about the right size. It arrived well packaged in an outer box and was undamaged. I’ve read stories where people have received what they suspected were used and returned models, but that does not appear to be the case with me. Following the break in procedures in the included manual, I ran a foodless test cook at 400° for 20 minutes. I immediately detected the oft talked about burning plastic odor. It was noticeable, it was not nearly as over powering as some of the one star ratings made it sound. After the first test cook I allowed it cool for about 10 minutes and ran a second and then a third foodless test cook all at 400°. While I have no proof to back up my theory, I suspect the odor is nothing more then production oils burning off. The odor seemed to subside with each consecutive test cook. After a day or so it was completely gone. I should mention that taking the little "feet" off the plate in the basket did not have any effect either good or bad with respect to the odor as far as I could tell. But like I said, by the next day the odor was gone. This morning I tried my first actual test cook of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Buttered each side of the bread and preheated the air fryer. When it was ready I set the timer for 6 minutes at 400° with a flip at the 3 minute mark. Sandwich came out nice and toasty, though I would have preferred the cheese to be a little more gooey. Next I tried some home made French fries. I think I made a few mistakes. First, I used the Julian feature on my mandolin to slice the potatoes. The fries came out extremely thin and small. The next mistake was I placed them in the basket and sprayed a little EVOO on them, thinking it would help them crisp. Because they were so small and thin, some burned, the others just came out soggy from the EVOO. I’m chalking that up to inexperience. So I decided to tackle chicken wings. I dusted them with a flour, salt, pepper and paprika mix and cooked them at 380° for 20 minutes. While they did come out somewhat crispy, they were not the golden color I was looking for. I think my mistake here was in not brushing them with olive oil to help crisp up the skin. Another case of inexperience. I’m not going to give up though because I do dearly love me some fried chicken. My next foray into air fryer cooking was boneless pork chops. I seasoned these with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder on both sides. Unless I’m following a recipe I don’t measure things, I just add till it “looks right”. Just for the heck of it I decided to use the Broil feature instead of Air Fry. I set the timer for 17 minutes and the temp at 400°. I flipped the chops at 8 ½ minutes. These came out perfect. A nice “bark” on the outside and juicy on the inside. I was so pleased with the way the pork chops came out, the next day I decided to take a run at bacon. I cooked two different batches. The first was using the air fryer setting. Time was six minutes, temp was 360°. When it was done the bacon still seemed to be not as crunchy as I would like, so I added 2 more minutes. This time they were nice and crunchy. My second batch was on Broil. You can’t change the temp which is preset at 400° so I reduced the cooking time down to five minutes. Personally I liked the Broil results better then the air fryer setting. So did my wife. As a side note, I was surprised at how little bacon grease remained in the pan after cooking. In the interest of full disclosure, after I opened the package of bacon, I cut the slab in half so they fit better in the basket. I was able to get six half slices into the pan without overlapping. Also after cooking I peeked inside the air fryer and did not see any evidence of bacon grease splatter anywhere. Since I already had a third of a breakfast done, I decided to go full Monty. I found three Yukon Gold potatoes in the kitchen so I peeled and diced them up. I tossed them with just a smidge of olive oil, garlic powder, salt, pepper and paprika. I tossed them in the fryer, selected broil and set the timer for 12 minutes. Remember, the temp for broiler is preset to 400° and can’t be changed. At least not as far as I could figure out. When they were done I taste tested a few and they were delicious so I called it good. While eating I came across a few of the bigger chunks that probably could have gone another minute or so, but that’s not a big deal. Then I cooked up some scrambled eggs for my wife and a couple sunnyside up for me, old school on the stove and breakfast was served. Over all I would have to say I was delighted with the results. I have not tackled the Dehydrate feature yet. I’m not sure how I feel about running my air fryer for several hours. I did take a stab at banana chips. To keep them from turning black some videos recommend dunking in salt water while another suggested using lemon juice. Since the one video didn’t mention how much salt to use, I went with the lemon juice. They did not “chip” and tasted like lemon. I think I’ll stick to slicing my bananas into my Raisin Bran. Tonight I’m testing out my air fryers ability to make the “perfect” baked potato. I placed two normal sized russet potatoes in the basket after stabbing them repeatedly with a fork and giving each one a loving massage with olive oil. I set it to air fry. Time set for 50 minutes at a temp of 400°. They were still a tad hard so I added another five minutes and that finished them off nicely. Dining Tip: Plain Greek yogurt makes an acceptable substitute for sour cream on a baked potato. If there is one thing I’m not happy with regarding this air fryer is its alert beeps. Usually half way through whatever cooking time you set, it will beep to remind you to shake or flip whatever you’re cooking. It will also beep to let you know the cooking cycle is done. The problem for me is the beep is so quiet I never hear it. I sit at my desk, right around the corner from the kitchen and still can’t hear it. The air fryer itself is so quiet I can barely hear it when it’s running. Thankfully I have Alexa to set those timers for me. OK, well I better end this review now or I’ll wind up writing a cook book. So in closing I have to say I am 100% happy and satisfied with my purchase. I did come across one other feature I'm not a big fan of. And that's the timer. It only counts down in full miutes until you are down to the last minute, when it converts to a seconds count down. So when you're cooking and the timer shows six minutes, you don't know if that means six minutes and 55 seconds, or six minutes and 2 seconds. That 53 seconds can make a big difference in an air fryer. But I monitor my cooking anyway, so it's not a deal breaker for me.

My new best friend!
Okay I'll say right off, maybe I should get more friends! But as a man who is a self-styled amateur chef, I have been pining for one of these types of cookers for a couple of years now. I always find a way to squeeze in one more item on the countertop. I choose this model based on reviews, features and brand name. I use my Instant Pot pressure cooker on a semi-regular basis and it is also a great cooking appliance, so I trust the brand name, and it doesn't disappoint. I first took the air fryer into the garage and ran it through a couple of cycles before using it in the kitchen. There was clearly some smell as noted elsewhere, likely from manufacturing. By the time I used it "for real" on the 3rd run, barely any smell. And by the next time...no discernable smell at all. My complaints are small, but let me get those out of the way. I wished it preheated up to temp faster. It's advertised in such a way that you think in 60 seconds, you're cooking. In my experience, it's 5+ minutes to get it to 400. Faster than an oven for sure, but not quite the blink of an eye I was hoping for. Second - the beeper is not loud enough. It beeps to tell you it's now at cooking temp, to rotate food or when food is done. For some reason, it seems louder to tell you food is done than it does to tell you the preheating is finished and to add food. You've got to be very close, so you can hear (or see) when it's up to proper temp. Since most foods are specifically timed, if you don't get your food in shortly after it heats up, it will start counting down whether there is food in it or not. Neither of these takes away from the overall 5 stars. I've had it for about 4 weeks and have tried a variety of items. I used the roast feature for skinless salmon. Amazing taste and quick. I found that 10 minutes was perfect for my fish. Others might find mine slightly overcooked, so experiment. It took about 3 tries for my fresh sweet potato fries to come out perfectly. I finally got it right at 20 minutes at 400 in the basket using the air fry function. Evenly cooked and delish. I did homemade coconut shrimp. I can't remember the exact time - it seems like 12 minutes at 380 but I'm going by memory. There are recipes out there to cross-check my memory. Again - used the air fry function. Baked potatoes were the best I've ever made at home. If you like potato skin, check this out. I rubbed them in olive oil, then lightly sprinkled sea salt, black pepper, and a blend of spices that is mostly garlic powder on the outside. These were large potatoes but I guessed and I guessed right - 400 degrees on bake setting for 50 minutes. Perfectly done inside and a nice crispy and tasty skin. You'll have to take a stab at it based on potato size. HUGE potatoes could be up to 60 minutes. Small taters - might be as low as 25 or 30 minutes. Other items I've done are quick prep items. Some frozen and breaded shrimp were perfectly done at 8 minutes at 400. Frozen tater tots same temp at 8-10 minutes. I sprayed a light coating of olive oil and salt on the tator tots. Crispy and delish. Everything so far has been easy and delicious. I have not used all functions - only bake, air fry, and broil so far. If you're on the fence and you like to cook, take the leap! 3/5/23 update: still really enjoying my air fryer. I find that it makes fish taste amazing. The dinner shown in the photo is flounder and sides. The flounder was cooked about 7 minutes using the broil function. Rubbed a bit of avocado oil, then used some fresh thyme and lemon pepper seasoning and a touch of garlic spice blend. Squeezed some lemon over the top, and broiled perfectly. I still use it, still enjoy it and continue to recommend it!

Nice size, cooks food well.
We bought this as a family gift. It has a good size basket, we've used it for appetizers and chicken wings and it's worked great.

I now understand the hype
First impressions: Unopened damaged box looked like there might be some damage inside but product was ok, no doubt due to secure packing. It’s much larger than I had envisioned. It’s well made. It’s easy to clean the basket and inner tray with a bit of soapy water. I made sure not to immerse the basket. Wiped interior and exterior with a damp paper towel. Not much of an instruction booklet but luckily it’s very intuitive to use. Simple operation to change temp from °F to °C and to change presets. Ran an initial test run to break it in. Unlike many other users, there was only a very faint plastic smell on first use (during the test run) that dissipated quickly. I also did not find it to overly loud as some reviewers claimed. There is a hum, which you’d expect from any appliance with a fan, but it’s certainly not what I found to be loud. Display is large and easy to read. Controls are intuitive. Tried a small batch of (Costco) fries - Airfry 20 minutes @400°F. Next time will reduce time to 18 minutes. Very crisp!! Lovely colour. I’m impressed. Super easy clean up with soapy water. I can envision multiple ways to use this appliance everyday. Bonus: rapid preheat, doesn’t heat up the house like an oven, relatively quiet, quick and even cooking, easy non-stick cleanup. Very happy with my purchase. And the price was reasonable although it increased immediately (within minutes) after I bought it and fluctuates wildly from week to week. Nonetheless, I bought 2 more to set aside as gifts.

Very easy to cook with!!
I had been watching for a lower priced Instant Pot air fryer for a few weeks and finally ordered a discounted returned Instant Vortex Plus 6 in 1 air fryer. Best thing I`ve done for a quite a while! It was delivered on schedule just yesterday. After a good soapy warm water clean and an hour of dry time (I didn`t wash the control panel) - I plugged it in without any food in it, and yes there was plastic odor, let it heat up to 380 for 5 minutes, then shut it off, pulled the pan out, set in aside for 6 hours. Then ran it again empty 2 times, pulled the pan and let it all cool. Not much odor at that point. Then made toast. All good. Then put 4 frozen pork chops in and set on air fry 350 for 10 minutes, Then raised temperature to 380 for 15 minutes. Checking at several intervals to make sure they were not burning, and flipped them half way through. The result was perfectly delicious chops. And so easy clean up. Wipe and rinse. I am used to the controls on an Instapot presser cooker and find the air fryer controls simple and easy to adjust. By the way, this is the 3d air fryer I have had. This one is by far the best ever. Highly recommend this appliance.
