Hydrofarm GCTT Tomato 3-Foot Tree Tower, albero di pomodoro arancione e verde

Brand:Hydrofarm

3.4/5

87.72

Great tomato tower!
I'm looking forward to planting a couple of tomato plants using these containers this year. They are the perfect size for both a tomato plant and for the size of my patio.

Easy gardening
These Tomato Barrels are perfect. Hydrofarm provides great service, after using these for several years, we broke one of the inserts. I called them to see if they sold inserts separately. They asked for the product number and 4 days later we received a new insert with no charge. We currently have 9. Just add good potting media, prewater the soil, plant your seedlings and fill up the bottom reservoir.

Convenient
Easy to assemble - Could be a bit bigger, to get more space between plants

Easy to use
Love the watering feature and it is easy to use. The plastic wall for your vines and stalks is alittle flimsy but still works ok

Short
I liked the idea of something sturdy to hold up my cucumber plant. When I received the planter, I quickly realized it wouldn't be tall enough for my purpose. I contacted the company regarding purchasing ad-ons, but was told they no longer make them. So I purchased a second planter and that did the trick.

No pump?
Apparently I misread the description. I thought it must have a pump to circulate the water. Nope, just a static reservoir to hold the water. Fine for established seedlings, but I doubt it would be good for germination. I added an air filter and pump. If you have a model with a pump, I would be interested.

Easy setup
It's been a while since I had a garden, and decided this year I wanted to try growing tomatoes and some lettuces. I've tried growing in just a large flowerpot but our Kansas wind and the usual hot dry summer would fry them unless I watered twice a day (which I can never seem to do). I'm hoping the self-watering part of these will help with that! The planters feel pretty sturdy and I like the self-watering feature, and the trellis part was pretty easy to put together and feels surprisingly sturdy for being plastic snapped together. I don't know how well it will handle Kansas winds but time will tell. I think each planter is large enough for 2 tomato plants, although if they get really big you might need to prune them just a little - and may need to attach the trellis to a stake or deck rail to prevent them being blown over. I bought 2 planters and plan to have 1 tomato in each plus some other plantings. I'll try to edit this review and add some pictures later. I bought a block of compressed coconut coir (which was fun to rehydrate!) and filled about the bottom half of each planter with that, then finished filling them with a soil mix designed for container gardening. Since the coconut fiber hold water like a sponge I'm hoping that will help keep everything watered this summer. I have not tried to move the planters since I filled them, but the rollers made it easy to position them where I wanted on the deck before I got started, and I think they'd be fairly easy to move even full as long as you don't lift the handle end too high.

Tomato growing pot ..... hoping for my best tommies yet!
2nd Review (May 2015). Well, one of these is now in full use in my new Glasshouse and is fully occupied with my two cucumber plants. Both growing well and have plenty of "flowers"/"cucumber buds"?. My tomato plants are still too tiny to even contemplate potting up into the other one. .......... I'm really looking forward to having both "grow pots" in full action. Letcha know how they perform! 1st Review (Feb 2015) These (ordered two) arrived a day early! Super "trackable" item with courier. The packaging was HUGE, but stood the test of the delivery system (as they came from Germany ... tracked them all the way from Frankfurt!) The quality is VERY good. I've studied the label that's attached to the pot, and have removed the stakes and supports that were beneath the pot/reservoir divider. Put the divider back in place (making sure the "filler hole" covers are above the divider (not below, or they will cover the holes!). So, they're ready for filling and just waiting for my tomato seeds to "hatch" and grup a bit before popping them in place for growing on. Having read the label on the pot, I'm aware that you need to water the compost (gently) until the reservoir has filled up initially. Also while the plants are tiny, until they are maturing a bit, you also water the compost (gently). Once they're settled and growing steadily, you then ensure that the reservoir is full all the time with water/feed of choice. ......... I'll update my findings during the growing season, and let you know how everything is/has fared this year.

Surprisingly huge planter
I had read the reviews on amazon.com and bore these in mind when buying the product. The reviews were right, the planter itself is fantastic, huge, a good water-wicking system and on wheels for easy moving. However, the trellising is cheap, nasty and terribly flimsy. This is easily overcome by chucking it in the bin and replacing it with a sturdy trellis panel or even using those wire contraptions that go round a growbag and hold the bamboo stick upright (I can't remember what their proper name is).

Awesome product
I made the mistake of planting two cherry tomato plants in the one oblong container and they grew like crazy - over 6 feet high and at least 2 feet outside the container in all directions - tons of cherry tomatoes - it was very easy to assemble however as the plants grew and grew the top bar kept popping out so I had to tie all four corners (maybe the top rail could have corner supports) then we had a wind and the weight of the plants blew the whole structure apart so I moved it to the deck railing and tied it firmly to the railing and it has held the weight of the HUGE plants. I live in Northern Ontario and am amazed at how much better these did than last years in ordinary planters - having the water reservoir in the bottom is the best idea ever.
