Hit and Miss Operation

Ordered a pair of these for a large shed (with dark lofts). Don't have power for the shed and wanted something that would provide a good light only when needed. Thought these would be the perfect solution because the lights would come on only when motion was detected allowing the batteries to last for a long time. No different than taking a flashlight into the loft, except these are permanently mounted in the shed. Well, upon taking them out of the box I inserted batteries to test the units. Getting the battery cover off was a trick (it wasn't easy as 1, 2, 3) because there are two plastic clips holding the cover that have to be depressed at the same time to pull the cover off. I found that if I depress the two clips then grab just one and pull I could get the cover off fairly easy. When you remove the mounting plate from the back of a unit there is an ON/OFF switch enclosed in a rubber boot for weather protection. The instructions tell you if switched to OFF the unit is OFF. If switched to ON the motion detector will switch the unit on for 15 seconds (the instructions don't elaborate any further on the operation). So one would presume if something keeps moving in front of the sensor it will stay on as needed. I tested this using my cat for motion in a lighted room. One unit came on immediately the other not so fast. I used my hand to cover the sensors because I believed the light in the room affected the operation. Each unit operated hit and miss at 3 to 6 feet, one slightly worse than the other. I'll probably regret it but I was prepared to return them because the stated operation was not rock solid, but I decided to go ahead and mount the units in the shed. Installed one in the loft and one where you come in the door. Upon installation the units were still hit and miss during daylight when tested. The motion detectors are a better solution than an ON/OFF switch but if they don't come ON when needed there not worth a dime. Defective? Maybe. If not then the quality is not 100%. Brightness got 3 stars for adequate and motion detection got 2 stars for not working flawlessly after being mounted and tested from 3 to 6 feet. The right idea depending on your needs but you may want to search a little further. UPDATE: I gave my overall rating 4 stars because so far to my surprise the lights have worked in the dark (after sunset) without issue. When working in the shed during daylight hours it seems that the sensor does detect light to keep the lights from coming on unnecessarily because I don't see them operating in the daylight (good, because that saves batteries). When they work the light is adequate, not super bright. The reflector is fairly large and spreads the light well enough to keep from bumping into things in the dark. Satisfied with purchase at this point! Update 11/11/2020 - I ran across this review and thought I would provide another update. The lights have continued to work fine to this point in time (about 6 months now). As in my original comments the sensors can be affected by ambient light, so if I enter the barn near dusk but there is still light outside, the light coming in the door I have noticed can prevent the light from coming on although the barn is dark inside. After the sun goes down the lights work without issue. After 6 months the lights are still using the first set of batteries and at the current rate of use they may last a year. I'm thinking of purchasing another set as I need an additional light in another loft and one in a smaller shed that doesn't have power. I don't go into them often in the dark but when I do these are more than adequate for the job. I also noticed the vendor tried to contact me after my original post, I never saw the comments until today but it is good to know they noticed the issue.

Very bright

It is really bright lights up a big area

Lightweight deterrent minimum time

I was a bit concerned about these not working because after I put batteries in them, they were bright and pretty responsive on hand waving but when i secured them outside they didnt react or respond to my neighbors dogs in their gangway, I had to keep rubbing the sensor on it to get it to respond. Im not sure what occured however because now they are lighting up when cats run thru the gangway and especially when the dogs are out without my assistance. Now the light and range isnt great for a large or long gangway space, i would benifit more with 2 per side of the house for max light but I am happy that they are responding without my rubbing the sensor.

nice lights

We put up these lights to allow us to see better while backing down the driveway in the dark. They work very well, giving us enough light to see the obstacles, but no so bright that they light up the neighborhood.

Great for small area lighting

These lights are well built and look very nice when installed. They only provide possibly 30 seconds of light after no motion is detected and the brightness level is fair when used in a small area where lower light is required. A decent buy for the price and the head adjustability is amazing.
