"Hoan" bagel slicer
I purchased this bagel slicer, and it works very well. The only curious thing is that although Amazon refers to the manufacturer as "Hoan", there was absolutely no indication on any of the packaging that the piece came from a company named Hoan. Probably not a big deal, because if you look at bagal slicers on Amazon, there are MANY that look identical but are different names and prices. Just seems a little wierd. Bottom line is that this bagel slicer is GOOD, STURDY and SAFE to use.

Great for anyone that has difficulty cutting bagels evenly
My son hates cutting bagels. He is a teen, but has some mild fine motor issues. It is rarely an issue for him, but there are certain things that he finds rather difficult & frustrating. When he uses our very good, very expensive bread knife (that cuts bagels easily), he ends up with a very uneven cut, every time. Instead of 2 halves, he ends up with a very uneven 3/4 & 1/4 cut, despite really trying really hard to cut straight down the middle. On a really bad day, those uneven cuts also have "warps" in them (like a vinyl record left out in the sun). He begged us to buy him a bagel guillotine, so we did. Honestly, we expected the "novelty" to wear off after a couple of months. Instead, he uses it every week, and loves that he can easily get a clean, even cut every time! I know for many this product is seen as a "novelty" item or a novelty gift. But it really is a nice kitchen tool to have for people with fine motor skills issues, and people with arthritis in the hands/fingers who find it difficult to grip a bread knife and then hold that grip while cutting, while using the other hand to hold the bagel steady.

This Thing Cuts Like Crazy!
I buy artisanal bakery bagels and they are quite thick as well as dense. I didn't believe this bagel cutter could slice all the way through them, nor did I know if the bagels would even fit in the cavity. Well, they barely fit but they did fit. And once I got the bagel mounted properly, that guillotine blade cut through it like hot butter. Amazing! No more trying to balance the bagel on its side while wielding a sharp bread knife. Fast, too; one shove and the bagel is sliced all the way through. The only downside is that it is a little hard to clean around the sharp blade, since it is embedded within the cartridge for safety. I'll probably have to get a bottle brush or something if it really needs scrubbing.

Don't Do Schmeer Without It
I read the reviews and knew I would be pleased. I received it and immediately read the enclosed instructions top to bottom, pretty straight forward to say the least. They said that a "collapsing" of the bagel was likely given a couple of factors, freshness, flavored and/or special ingredient blends. True to its word I bisected my first victim. Sure enough the bagel appeared to be being turned inside out, BUT, it in fact was sliced nicely. I looked at the unit and dry sliced air a couple of times and fiddled with it when I noticed that there was just a bit of "play" side to side in the blade part. I grabbed another victim and this time instead of just pushing down straight I "jiggled" or "see-sawed" the blade side to side as I pushed. Viola....NO compression, LESS effort and actually NO additional time required to "jiggle". The blade dropped right through and after a couple of more I found that I only needed this movement for 1/2 the distance and a CLEAN compression free cut time after time. The best only became better. I am looking forward to a long happy relationship with this gadget.

Love this bagel cutter
Had ordered bagels which were not pre sliced. Was having difficulty trying to slice the bagel with a knife & holding the bagel at the same time. Found this bagel slicer & it makes a clean cut with even portions of bagel that fits perfectly in toaster. Would highly recommend this item!!

I was tired of being challenged by cutting my bagel and possibly a hand! this is so Marie Antoinette, u know guillotine and all. This is the most efficient and safe way of slicing a bagel right in half, or half bagel. What a gem, I have put bagel hell behind me. A bagel eaters must have. I also bought one for my son and his girl she loves it!

Didn't Know I Needed This
I make my own bagels at home, and saw someone on a YouTube video who also bakes their bagels at home use this device. I thought, "What the heck why not try it?" I'll never go back to slicing a bagel with a bread knife again! It works that well! If you're a bagel fanatic, treat yourself and buy one of these.

I rarely write a review, however this is by far an awesome kitchen tool. I can’t recommend it enough. It cuts through a bagel as if it was cutting through butter. Safety is a priority for me —-not to worry as it must be with manufacturer also. You won’t be sorry with this tool.

Awesome, Definitely A Finger Saver!
Works perfect. But don't try to go too slowly. Just press the blade up to the bagel, and then push down quickly. A perfect slice every time. Far better than trying to use a knife.

I bought this fine piece of kitchenware as a present to my boyfriends two little sisters. We bonded while he was at work by watching season after season of The O.C., and I saw how they drooled over the genius that is the bagel slicer. I did a lot of research, because I am 7 out of 10 poor, and this seemed to be not only cheap, but have good reviews from various websites. It arrived promptly in a nice box, ready for me to wrap up for Christmas! Appearance: pretty scary. I worry I might be held responsible if someone loses a finger, but actually it has a huge perspex-looking screen that covers the blade so don't worry about trapping any body part (eek) in there! Slick looking on the kitchen top! Doesn't look either cheap or pretentious, very nice design. Bagel slicing: If the bagel is slightly too thin it slops to the side and gives you an uneven cut. It does always (pretty much) leave a nice clean cut, but not always on target. PRECISE but not ACCURATE (if there's anyone out there with a GCSE in biology, they'll know the difference) Does make you feel like you're in the O.C. Cleaning: I don't think it's ever been cleaned to be quite honest. But the crumbs can just be tipped into the bin. Pros: No harassment of trying to cut bagels with a knife! Very quick and easy. Makes you feel like you're on the O.C. Feels safe - though don't necessarily give this as a Christening present... Cons: You're not really on the O.C. The perspex screen automatically strikes this off as a torture device - sorry ladies, he may have cheated on you, but his 'littleman' won't fit into this. Doesn't always cut accurately I would recommend this to anyone. I have given it five stars because due to the differing size of today's bagels, I can't see how it would be possible to have any bagel slicer that does fit all bagels enough that they won't slide around and be cut unevenly, sometimes. Hope you found this review helpful!
