Great cooler, missing wheels
Let me start off with the only two real negatives I have. First is that mine came with only two wheels instead of the 4 it should have. This is why it’s a 4 star. Second is that I really would have like to pick the color. Mine is plain white which most might have liked but I was hoping for something else. Now let’s get into a few technical details. An evaporative cooler will only work in specific areas and conditions. Please make sure to check if your area will allow for this as many will not. One thing I’ve noticed from other review is that people don’t seem to realize just how specific a condition you need to make this work well. I live in Eastern Wyoming which is at the edge of the effective zone for this. For my house I have a small window fan pulling hot air in and hitting directly into the back of this unit. This allows for dry air to always be pulling over the media pad. At the opposite side of room there is another window fan functioning as exhaust pulling air out of the house. This creates a continuous flow cooling the room. With the three fans I pay a lot less then I would running my ac unit. It does cool but is not as effective as it would be if I was in Utah or Nevada. I’m not going to get my house down to the 60s as I could with the ac, but it does make the room far more comfortable in the hot summer days. If you are considering this please look up a reference chart for evaporative cooling temp/RH so you can have realistic expectations for the performance of this unit. Selling point for me is using 200 watts to cool the room versus 1500 watts. Yes ac is more effective here but costs a lot more to run.

Runs with solar powered Rocksolar 400W & 60 or 120 W portable folding solar panel.
Yeah off the grid so to speak. We have a covered 24 foot patio that has no AC to it. Dang. I hang LED USB powered lights and power banks plus fans too the same way but when it's super hot like our 9 days of triple digit heat this June it's hide inside all day and evening. AHHHH how sad is that. I recall my parents dragging along for 10 years of moving a swamp cooler in the 50's into the 60's. I ended up being the maintenance crew where I kept it filled with water. It could go dry but it never burned out. If I wasn't about to fill it it wasn't filled. My job from around 8 through 18 was to FILL that sucker. The last year we had it I talked my dad into hanging out a small window that was just the size of the fan box basically and the rest was supported by two by four ugly as it was brace my dad built on outside of house and window. I do not recall if all we did was close the window in winter or what now. BUT now we could fill it with the HOSE and we did or I did. My dad worked out of town much of my life only home on weekends. My Mom was dependent on everyone else doing pretty much everything for her. I never understood how she was like that. Meantime I went in search of swamp coolers for this year. I narrowed down to this one. Not shaped like the old metal box we had as a kid it works on same principle. And I didn't want larger units one has to store these things when not in season up here in NW MT. I ordered it and was given a month and half shipping estimate. The next few days a new notice of about a week or two. It arrived super soon about 5 days short of the two week mark even. SO YEAH. And I set it up to my Rocksolar today and the Rocksolar to the 120W roll up solar panels and it's hanging in there. What has caught me by surprise is how quick it goes through the water. So the patio is a ways away from the nearest outdoor faucet too and my hubby of 49 years is not one to let me just leave a hose hanging about on the ground for long. I put up with his messes but it's not a compromise situation and besides I probably would object too. I need the excercise hauling a gallon or 5 at a time anyway. It's not fully cooling my patio but it's close to almost half way reach. Not bad. Not bad at all. I will order a spare mat replacement so if anything were to happen to the first one I will have a spare right when needed. Unlike with my parents big metal box that ran dry a lot and never damaged anything like the pump or motor or fan I don't want to take the chance with this plastic model and the manual provided ZERO insight into this question. Will pump burn up if you run it when it's out of water? I do not intend to find out. However they do suggest a list of replacement parts are available including a pump and motor and even fan blades and floats. So I doubt the warranty is worth much in that they insist you pay for it's return shipping both ways. However they also mention say with Amazon here you get 30 day return policy if it fails in that time. So that pretty much sums it up. I'm so happy my experiment with running it off solar is working. I want to use it for Hubby's Ham club screen house events when it's too hot for everyone and the equipment. It is not meant to cool a huge area and of course outdoor the ambient temps and windy conditions are all going to influence it. And I may even consider taking it camping. I've looked at thos wee little swamp like coolers they try to sell for that but yeah just look so cheap. A fan for camping works pretty good most of the time in the mountains and along the river. However I once came close to damaging my Dometic 27Qt freezer and 800W solar charged batteries by leaving inside my tent in morning at 64 Degrees and returning only 4 hours later with full sun and reading 111 degrees F inside the tent. I thought for sure I'd ruined one or both batteries and freezer too. But once I cooled everything down they all seemed to reluctantly or not activated or rebooted and all was fine. I like to experiment with the USB and portable powerbanks and solar technology these days. Hubby he's kind of supportive but I'm the one who's into it and he would never buy the stuff I do and I'm also the one to go camping for the past 50 years solo. A lot of solo female campers out there across all age groups. Many with similar stories men folk not into it but happy we who love it are happy to go on our own. Ok it's not tiny it's substantial in size. Wheels went on but I might upgrade those to the non covered style as the covered ones love to catch my waist long hair and our Ragdool kitty fur that's all super wooly and that's a pain to clean out. The non covered casters are wonderful in that they just don't bind up like that. I might run this on the third floor in my sewing room too because it gets too hot in summer to sew half the time up there. I wouldn't trust the handle to carry it and never with water in it. But to help glide it about into position not a problem. Oh the water chute door would not open on ours. It came with a built up spur across the entire lock like thing and pull tab. I couldn't pull it open with pliers. Hubby finally worked it open with a screw driver and then used a sharp pocket knife to peel and trim away the burred up area and now it works fine. But was very worried it would break and the tab is slightly damaged due to my use of pliers in an attempt to pull the jammed thing open. I do hope the door loosens up just a bit more over time and use while still staying secure and closed when not needed. Go for it if you have a small area to keep a few people cool but it's not super cooling and swamp coolers work better in dryer climates. However I see a lot of reviews of those using them in humid areas. Remember inside you must provide open window or door for air flow in and out as these do not work with an exhaust system. Also some hardwater may leave a coat of white on furniture and most noticed on hard top furniture like side tables and counter tops etc. Fabrics are not as likely to show signs of the minerals maybe vinyl and leather could. You could brush it off and polish supplies usually do the trick on a hard surface. But something to consider. Stay safe everyone and Chill out!

LOUD! Moves a lot of air.
UPDATE: My guess was right. 2 degree cooling in 60% humidity of coastal CA, over 20 degree cooling in 30% humidity of mile-high AZ. Yep, 90 degrees in, under 60 degrees out. Amazing. I still don't like the noise, but this thing saved me. Uses about a gallon of water per hour. That's not a problem! The more water the better, because (duh) it's an evaporative cooler! People who complain it uses too much should be the ones getting the best results. It's counter-intuitive to leave a big window open, but the whole room is cooler when dry air is getting in. Get yourself a cheap humidity meter and keep it below 40% by letting in more air. If your air isn't that dry, maybe you don't want a swamp cooler. The water pump seems bigger than needed, and on low fan the pump (which always runs at the same speed) hums and gurgles at about the same volume as the fan. I wish the fan were in the back where it would be quieter. You sort of need to shout over it on high. I'd also like 12V DC motors for both pump and fan to get rid of hum (and to be more efficient in my off-grid application). Moves a LOT of air, and blows it fast in a narrow far-reaching column rather than spreading it out. (I think that's a good thing.) My initial test measures only a 2 degree (F) drop in CA with 60% relative humidity. The same day was 16% humidity in AZ, so I'm sure it will cool far more effectively there. (I'll update my review after testing in lower humidity.) Wow, it's noisy. That may end up being the deal breaker. As others have mentioned, the filler door is a JOKE, mine needs a screwdriver to open and something with a pour spout to work with the small hole. Impossible to clean the reservoir without dismantling the case and removing the filter. The auto-fill float valve is a huge plus but if you want to drain it you'll need to put it in a bathtub because there's no way to connect a hose: just pop the silicone cork and water gushes out. The spec of 85 watts is off! My measurement agrees better with Candice's review: On high with the pump running takes a total of 93 watts. The pump alone is 17 watts, fan alone is 50 or 76 watts (low or high).

Minor regrets
This was my first experience with an evaporative cooler and did not know what to expect other than what I read online. The hope was to obtain a product that would cool off a 100 sq ft room on a hot day prior to going to sleep. If you're thinking of purchasing this product (or a similar one) know what you're signing up for and have realistic expectations. Many people assume this will provide similar cooling relief from the heat that an AC unit would. This is not even close to that. If that's you're expectation, buy an AC unit. An AC condenses (dries) the air, this does the opposite which is probably why it's recommended for dry environments. It actually adds quite a bit of humidity to the room. Much more that I would prefer. We had a good week of 30+ C temperatures. Even with black out blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day, the bedroom still got up to 25 - 26 C by evening. This was far too hot for my 2-year old son to have a good sleep. This was the reason I made the purchase. The hope was to cool the room by 2 or 3 degrees prior to his bedtime. The first attempt at using this seemed not bad. I had it on high for about an hour and situated it just outside of his room but pointed towards the room. The temperature that night in the room was 23 C. The next two nights were not as good. I wanted to cool the room even more so had the machine on high for 2 hours and directly in the room. The room got so humid that everything felt damp and even more uncomfortable than ever. It was quite unbearable. The mistake I made was not opening a window in the room. I thought since it was so hot outside it would be counter-intuitive. So I gave it another try but opened the window (which is actually what's recommended). I turned the machine on high for 1 hour, then left it on high but turned off the water pump for another hour. This made a huge difference in the humidity. The room was still more humid than desirable, but tolerable. Due to having the fan only on and the window open I was able to push most of the humid air out. However, the room was still quite warm (about 23 - 24 C). The recommended use is to turn this on "not during the hottest part of the day". I didn't know this when I made the purchase. In hindsight now, I would not have made this purchase since the purpose I had was the opposite of how this is intended to be used. Does this help cool a room? Yes, but only moderately. This is probably a personal preference, but the worst part of this machine is the humidity that it creates. If you don't have a window open and/or just blow the fan for a while, everything feels damp. It's especially intolerable when the bed feels damp. I'll continue using it now that my expectations are more realistic. On the plus side, it's an excellent fan for creating crosswinds during the morning when windows can be opened and the temperature outside is cool. However, I could have paid far less for a really strong fan.

Effective When Used Correctly
I barely ever write reviews on here, but am writing this one in case it helps someone. I used this evaporative cooler last summer during a long heatwave in southern Alberta and it made the hot evenings more bearable. Listen, an AC unit will get your room cooler than this, but it also zaps any humidity from the air in the process, draws more power, is less environmentally friendly, and frankly sitting in a heavily air conditioned environment makes me feel a bit weird after awhile. With this unit we were able to get our bedroom three, sometimes even four degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Here’s what we did that was so effective: -place the unit in front of an open window so that it’s drawing air in from there and blowing it into the room -leave the room door open and if possible have a window on the opposite side of the house open to create a cross-current -run the unit an hour or preferable two or three before you want to go to bed to cool the room, then switch the device to fan mode overnight because the tank doesn’t hold enough water to run for more than four hours or so at a time You definitely want to live in a dry climate to use this, you’ll appreciate having that extra humidity. You also want to make sure you have that good airflow I mentioned earlier to really cool things down effectively.

Excellent purchase
This has saved us this summer. Even just using the fan option really cools things down. Using the evaporative cooler function is loud and does use a lot of water and add more humidity, but it also blows really cold air. I would buy it again.

Good but tank water should be full.
Good but tank water should be full, not doing so and it is very noisy! but overall it is good.

So Far Working Great in Winnipeg
Recently took delivery but was skeptical it would work here in Winnipeg MB. We are beginning a heatwave and the room I work from is very warm as AC does not work well in that room. The Unit is larger than expected but manageable and the castors are a bonus as it glides effortless even when full of water. Noisy but tolerable for a smaller room when on full with water flowing. You do get used to it and the fan only mode reduces the volume quite considerably. Impressed as the levels of coldness are impressive (NOT AC cold but not far off at all) I am shoched at how cool it is. Great buy for the few weeks I will use it here LOL
