Disappointed by manufacturer's design change

I had these lights on my house when I bought it nearly 12 years ago. They were sold by Home Depot under the Hampton Bay brand (but still made by Heath Zenith) back then. I ordered a replacement a couple years ago from Amazon. It was the same die cast aluminum design, but had updated electronics with a motion sensitivity adjustment on the bottom instead of the back (handy). It matched the others in appearance. Last week I ordered 3 more to replace older ones, and found they had changed the construction significantly. They are no longer die cast aluminum as the description says. They are stamped steel. Hope the paint lasts because they are obviously in the weather 24/7. The paint is now a brighter white. But being a stamping, it doesn't have the crisp design (edge details, etc) that the castings had. It doesn't look quite as nice. Worse, they actually changed the design in that the main base/arm attaches to the lantern section in a different location. Instead of attaching at the decorative finial below the lantern, it now attaches at the six-sided portion of the lantern. This reduces the over height of light fixture. Not a big deal unless you're trying to match with an original one. What I found most disappointing was that Heath Zenith did not even coordinate this product change with the artwork on the box. One of my three boxes still had the original design. See the comparison photo. And they never even updated the part number, so Amazon probably has no idea there was a change to the product. But the description needs to be updated to reflect that it is steel and not aluminum.

Great light overall

I have three of the Model SL-4196-WH which is the same light with the exception that the SL-4196 has a longer removable screw-in bottom finial while the finial tip of this model {the SL-4192-WH} is shorter and is molded in as part of the lamp housing. I learned this the hard way...they both looked the same at a glance on the web page, so I ordered the cheaper model {about $5 less} to save a couple bucks. Oh well, foolish me! It is not a deal breaker, though, you don't notice the difference unless you actually compare one light to the other {it's only about an inch or so shorter} and when my other garage light goes {which will probably be any day now} I will order this model to match it. On actually reviewing the light...It mounted easily, as did the older ones I have. The photocell on this model is not as sensitive, I found, than the older 4196 I have. It takes a little longer to come on in the evening and goes out before my other lights. That's fine, saves electricity, even though it bothers me some that both lights on the garage don't come on together anymore {just my OCD showing it's ugly face again} . The motion sensor part works very well. I, too, thought that the light should have lasted longer than the six years I have had them. They face east and when I went to remove the one that stopped working, the lense of the sensor cracked into several pieces due to the ultraviolet of the sun. If your light stops working as it should don't throw it away, though. You can always convert it to a regular non-motion non-dusk to dawn light simply by disconnecting the wires to the sensors and connect the two wires from the bulb socket directly to your junction box {just bypass the sensor, in other words}. That is if you have a need for a "regular" wall-switch controlled outdoor wall lamp, perhaps in some other location on your home. And if your sensor lense is cracked or missing, it won't matter since since there would be nothing behind it to be damaged by rain, etc. Just a suggestion so it's not a complete waste. UPDATE: Oct' 2018...I contacted Customer Service at Heath-Zenith and upon request they will mail out {free of charge] replacement sensor lenses since they realize the high failure rate of this part due to sun exposure!

Sensitivity feature poor

I bought two and neither of them turn on until I get a few feet away. Other than that installation was simple and they look and work great.

Looks great,inconsistent motion sensor

I have installed 10 of these types of lights over the years,so i have an idea as to quality and features. This was for our back door(original died after 16 years) so we needed a new one. Since it was the back door,looks were secondary to price/value. This fit both price/value to a T! Easy to install and had great instructions and packaging. I do not wear much black,yet my wife does,the motion sensor does not like her or so it seems. If i am wearing my usual blue jacket and Khaki pants the motion sensor sees me at approx 12 steps from the door,her on the other hand she gets 5 steps or less before it triggers. Weird I know, but for purposes of this review notable.It has not falsely come on at all,maybe a first in my experience. I triple checked the wiring,and can find no missteps and the ground is great. Also of note, i no longer use CFLs in these outside lights just a waste with the slow to full brightness and replacement costs. I am using the Sylvania 70 watt Double Life Halogenia bulbs(Put out 100 watts of light at 70 watts) and they are wonderful. We decided, the shock value of the bulbs to an intruder or nuisance animal trumped the energy cost savings of LED or flaws of CFL. These fixtures always get mixed reviews, yet i can comfortably say this one has been very good regardless of it ignoring my wife.

Beautiful and Useful

We replaced the broken light fixture with this and instantly improved the front of the house! The motion sensor is super sensitive and bright. Quite pleased!

I give up

Holy cow what a piece of crap ordered three of these lights none of them worked one lasted a month the other two lasted 3 days it’s a nice looking light but the motion sensor is obviously cheap and deffective ordered a different light. My last motion sensor light lasted over 10 years and got rid of it to get something a little bit more modern huge waste of time installing and uninstalling this junkie light.
