Finches love it
The yellow and black American Goldfinches love these thistle socks. Our backyard is full of these little colorful birds, we feed them often during the winter months. They fight over positions on the socks. They have gotten so used to us that we have to shoo them away when refilling it. The red House Finches will eat off the socks but prefer the sunflower seeds. So I set out sunflower seeds for them and fill socks with Thistle seeds for the Goldfinches. (The sparrows leave it alone because they are not able to hang on to the sock.) I bought the large sock so I do not have to refill it as often. Does not leak too many seads if it is hung out of the wind. What does spill on the ground is quickly gobbled up by the Morning Doves. We have this sock hanging by our kitchen window so we can watch the Goldfinches up close. It is fun to watch them and they get used to being so close to us. I know when it is time for a refill because I will see them sitting on the sunflower plants, staring in the window. Ok, who has ME trained?!

convenient; finches like it and so do I
The finches seem to enjoy feeding from sock feeders. The weave gives them many places to hang on while feeding. I moved to sock feeders after becoming tired of the need to clean out traditional feeders after a rain, as otherwise wet seed can get stuck in crevices and become moldy. Traditional tube feeders are awkward to clean, in my view. Sock feeders can be tossed or washed to prevent mold building up. The finches eat all the seed from my smaller sock feeder in a few days. Therefore, I ordered this larger (25 oz) filled sock before leaving for a few days vacation. I did not want the finches to run out of seed in my absence. I remain satisfied with the performance of this sock feeder, and I have been happily refilling it for about 8 months now. It is true that I spill a little bit more seed when refilling the sock than when I refilled tube feeders, but the doves come through and look for the spilled seed on the ground, so that is not an issue for me.

Love Watching The Finches!
If you *really* love watching the small birds (as I do), this is for you. Granted, it's not the prettiest thing hanging in the backyard, but it's truly effective. I timed hanging the "sock" right next to my regular bird feeder and it took three minutes before I had over four various Finch breeds feeding. It's also refillable; if you check out the empty socks on Amazon, plus the Finch seed, it comes out a better deal to start with if you don't know what kind of response you will get. I needed the feeder; now all I need is more Thistle; they have almost gone through the entire sock already. Those crazy tiny birds--the Blue Jays are *so* upset that they can't get in on it, lolol!

I began using these socks this past winter after being frustrated with my traditional finch feeder. It attracted no finches. I started with the small size and found goldfinches flocking to the sock. I bought a couple more and every time I looked out there were from 5 to 12 goldfinches covering the sock feeders. I wash them and reuse. However, stick to the Heath brand if you decide to use them. I tried a couple of other brands and no luck. Upon comparison I found the Heath feeders have openings that are just a bit larger than the other brands, large enough that the finches have an easier time feeding but still small enough that the nijer seed does not pour out!

Not Attractive to Finches
This is the first finch feeder that I ever bought. We (my wife and I) observed it for a couple of weeks and it was rare to see a finch or any other bird pay any attention to it, much less eat any of the contents. I decided to purchase a finch feeder and a container of thistle. In just an hour or so after hanging it there was finch activity at the feeder by an American Goldfinch and others. The sock hangs just inches from the feeder but it continued to be ignored. I can see no reason to keep the ignored thistle sock along with the finch feeder which is kept busy. Besides, the finch feeder protects the feed from the elements (and squirrels) while the sock does not. Good bye thistle sock.

Great find
I was unable to find a product like this in my area, so I was very pleased to find this on Amazon (with Prime Membership free shipping!) It didn't last as long as I'd hoped as small sparrows seemed to like the thistle as much as the few finches that came. The sock is reusable, however, and I found I can buy thistle in bulk at my local pet store.

Nice Size
It was not even a full minute before I had goldfinches on the thistle socks. It's a nice size to accommodate many birds at once without fighting!! I hung 2 socks so there has been 20+ birds at once - great to watch!

Messy !!
Really messy. Seeds everywhere. And you cannot hang it in a good spot because when it rains it becomes a really bigger mess. I threw it away and went down to the local feed&seed store and bought loose thistle seed.
