Phantom Turbo
We bought this pool cleaner probably 8 years ago. Hadn't used in 2 years due to damage to pool. Didn't feel like the entire system was worth the money. Now don't make it any more and couldn't find anyone in Atlanta that wanted to tackle fixing it. (No one had anything nice to say about the product.) Ours was going around in circles and only on top. So, I went on line and read reviews and ordered this item. Let me start by saying I am a dumb blonde and my "mechanical skills are limited". Thanks to the reviews I took pictures and made lots of notes in the repair process. (You not have to keep up with which connection each of the tubes go to, but also whether they go up or under the existing tubes. I numbered and drew my own diagram before removing the old one) I would work for a while, sit it down and them come back and review what I had done. Finally finished and put the cover back on. My husband was amazed that I was able to fix it and it is in our pool working great right now. Part was expensive, but made our system last at least another year. My review is not for this part, but for the product as a whole. Plastic is not very sturdy and breaks easily, especially with age. However, this part was new, in good shape and just what I needed. Price is a little high, but I feel sure these are limited.

Hayward Phantom Turbo Spinning, Spinning, Spinning
My Phantom Turbo pool cleaner started spinning in circles constantly after about 2 years of operation and after looking online, it appeared that either the gearbox (this item), manifold (Hayward AX6000MA3 Phantom Pool Cleaner Parts Manifold Assembly) or possibly both needed to be replaced. I looked at the price of a replacement unit and it was ~$700, so I decided to replace both the gearbox and the manifold at the same time for a little less than $150. Taking the unit apart was easy, but getting everything back together again was a bit frustrating so make sure to take photos of the unit as you are disassembling it. After an afternoon of working on the cleaner it is functioning like new again. Looking a bit closer at the cleaner, I can see that other parts (wheels and hoses) will need replaced in the not so distant future, but doing this piecemeal will work for me and spread the costs out a bit. No exotic tools needed so most people should be able to do this if they have the patience. Nothing wrong with the parts for the missing star, but I think the pool cleaner should last longer than two years between rebuilds.

Great Price, Great Service - but read review before buying
It seems like my Hayward Phantom goes bad on me about once every year. It starts going in circles because the spin-out feature gets stuck. I try all the flushing out like Hayward recommends, but it only has limited results. Anyway, I decided to try to replace the parts myself, so I started w/ this part, got a great price and purchased it. I replaced the gear box, but to my disappointment it worked for 2 days then started spinning again. I finally did some research on Hayward's Q & A and found out that the real problem may be more in the manifold than the gear box. Then I dissected the old manifold, and w/o getting in to a bunch of engineering drivel (of which I know nothing about) THAT is where the real issues are. I went and purchased one and viola' it was fixed! So, while this was a great price and I have nothing but good things to say about the merchant, this may not be the part you need to fix the spin out issue.

The key to keeping a Phantom running right
This is the second time I've replaced this part in my Phantom. I have rock around the pool, and lots of sand gets in the water. The water jet action through this part is probably allowing the sand to erode the seal on the little ball valve, and when it gets bad enough, the cleaner won't work right because water shoots out the front 'turn around' jet all the time. If you're just a little bit handy, you should have no problem replacing the gearbox. (Of course, I open mine up and do something to it to keep it running about a dozen times a year, so it's all routine to me now.) There are instructions included, but you don't really need them. Just note where the three hoses go, and replace it just like the original. You can save a little effort if you wish by disconnecting the new hoses and just attaching the old ones to the new gearbox.

fixed the problem
this resolved the problem caused by the leaking unit I replaced on Hayward's least reliable product that I love when it works but curse when another part breaks or another hose connector joint starts leaking so bad it reduces the pressure to the point the cleaner stops working. The easiest way to install this is to remove the new tubes and leave the old tubing in place at it's destination and just reconnect it with new tie wraps at the replaced unit end. Otherwise you have to take out too much of the cleaner's internal equipment, not necessarily a fun job in tight quarters.

Replacement Gearbox for Hayward Phantom
Our 5 1/2 year old Phantom started doing the "spin of death" earlier this year. A second symptom was water spurting from behind the ball in the check valve under the cam cap. This replacement gearbox solved the problem. I did not use the new hoses that came with the product, but instead to save time I just reused the old hoses, cinching them with the new ties to the new gearbox. Instructions that are supplied are detailed and helpful, making the changeout pretty straightforward. The Phantom is back doing its job.

but not too bad. It works good when first installed
It takes a while to install, but not too bad. It works good when first installed, but will not last very long. I am on my third one, and this one is malfunctioning now. It only lasted about 1 season.

Haywood Pool Cleaner was only a few years old and ...
Haywood Pool Cleaner was only a few years old and Haywood discontinued it, this part is cheap but not in price . I called Hayward Pools and they would not return may calls.
