Love these
I’ve used them for my Ostriches, goats and dogs and they last years. I just keep a pair of pliers specifically for removing and retightening the drain hole when I clean them everyday with a bottle brush and have never had a problem with leaks.

Good but not quite perfect
Tip: The plug doesn’t seal, so it drips when holding water. I initially added teflon tape, which helped, but it doesn’t survive multiple removals. I figured out a rubber water hose washer fits in the bottom of the plug and works perfectly to stop the dripping. Those washers are dirt cheap, and they should just include one in the box instead of the ineffective o-ring. Once I made that switch it was less frustrating to drain tree debris out of it, so we clean it more often to keep it nice. It’s made of flexible plastic with no reinforcement, and it isn’t designed with a simple bracing point down lower to hold it level against the wall. As a result, when it’s full of water it droops down in the front, doesn’t sit level. We have some smaller dogs, so ours is mounted low on the wall, and to keep it simple we have a rock underneath holding it up level. It could really use both a reinforced back where the mounting screws go and a small bit added to the plastic to reach back and hold against the wall so it stays level and doesn’t deform. Otherwise, generally speaking, it does what it’s supposed to do and hasn’t given us any problems. We have moderately hard water at about 18 grains per gallon, and over 4 months it has shown signs of minor scale accumulation at the water line, but that’s about right and doesn’t hurt it’s function. Another thing that’s nice is using standardized and replaceable fittings. It meant that when I wanted to adapt it to an existing garden hose thread hose that ended in a compression fitting like an ice maker, a trip to the hardware store was all I needed to make it work. We have an elderly chihuahua, and I was concerned it would be too tall for him to use, but because it’s mounted low on the wall, it’s worked out well.

Works as described
I mounted this waterer in the barn for sheep to have at night when locked up. It works as described. My only complaint with it would be the drain plug is plastic and easily cross threads if not careful. Also a consideration, not the fault of the item, sheep muzzles are dirty and they like to stick their whole bottom chin in the water making it a bit nasty. With it not being a big water trough, I find I have to clean the water more often than the larger troughs.

Made my life a little bit easier
Made my life a little bit easier. I have 4 dogs and having fresh water available is a constant task, especially in the southern Texas heat. I read all the reviews and decided to make a couple modifications based on other's suggestions. First, I purchased the brass 1/2" Gilmour female swivel rather than use the plastic one that comes with the water dish. Second, I attached a piece of garden hose with a PVC ball on/off valve to the drain. Third, I built and mounted the water dish to a wooden base rather than to a structure. Brass 1/2" Gilmour female swivel: I didn't try the plastic swivel that comes with the dish, so can't say if there are any problems with it. I used the brass fitting mainly because I needed something that the dogs couldn't break or would try to eat. The fitting works perfect, no leaks. I did use Teflon tape on the water dish side threads since some users reported leaks at this location. Drain: Because several reviews commented on problems with the drain assembly being difficult to work with and leaking, I attached a piece of 3/4" garden hose and a 3/4" PVC ball on/off valve to the drain so I wouldn't constantly be opening the drain plug for cleaning. This was another review's idea and worked perfect. Mounting: Again, based on some reviews that the water dish was not made from thick plastic and sagged when filled, I decided to make a wooden base for the dish to set on, rather than mount to a wall/structure. This worked out perfect for me. Since the dish is mounted to a movable base, I simply tip it over to empty it for cleaning. And because the dish starts to fill with water again, I’m able to wipe out any sediment/dirt/slime and rinse at the same time. This makes it very easy for me to clean the bowl. No more need for the garden hose/on-off valve attached to the drain, but it would have worked if I needed it. The base has a small step for the little dogs and I added a 2”x4” anti-tip support at the back to keep the big dogs from tipping it over. I could probably make the supports a little shorter since the dogs don’t appear to be interested in tipping it over, at least while I’m watching. And I could attach the base to a structure if I wanted to. Ball-cock valve: This was not an issue at all for me. I made one adjustment for the water level and that was it, no need to keep adjusting. Ball-cock valve cover: The cover comes attached with plastic pin clips. I found the cover difficult to remove and had to force it off. Eventually these clips will break, depending on how often this cover is removed, but the dish also comes with 2 small screws to attach the cover which is much more convenient. Overall, I recommend this product. It's not perfect, but It’s dependable and it works for me. I looked at multiple automatic water dishes and found this one to be the best.
