The right part - easy to install, don't worry about the threads
I have one of the piece of junk Deere L100 mowers sold by a big box hardware store. These are better than the originals that came with the crappy deck on the L100, and are as good as the ones you buy as replacements from Deere directly. Two things to note about these replacements -- NOTE 1: After reading the reviews of this replacement part, my only concern was that people had commented on the spindle not being threaded for putting in the bolts to hold it to the deck. I have no problem using a tap and threading for a bolt, and was only mildly concerned about having to make a template first to make sure I drilled the holes for the threads in the right place. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THIS -- While it isn't threaded, the bolt holes are already drilled in the right place. If you get the self-tapping screws from this vendor or from Deere, they'll go right in and do the job just fine. Alternately, you can use a tap and die set and put the threads in yourself in just a minute or two. The body of these spindles is, just like the original, made of some kind of soft pot-metal alloy or aluminium or something and they thread very easily (in fact you should be careful not to strip them out when you tighten down the bolts). NOTE 2: Unlike the original crap that came on my Deere L100, these spindles DO have the grease gun fittings installed. There are actually two kinds of bearing on these spindles. The one at the top of the shaft is a sealed bearing, but the one near the bottom of the shaft is actually loose ball bearings with the race formed out of the inside shape of the spindle casing itself. A spacer runs between the two. YOU MUST USE A GREASE GUN AND FILL THESE WITH GREASE if you want them to last at all. You should do this regularly as well. The originals didn't have the grease gun fitting and that's just one of the things that made this deck such a piece of junk.

Quick Install Nice Quality
Replacement spindle assembly required a bit of preparation before installing but I gave the item five stars because of the overall quality of the replacement part. After a quick stop at the hardware store, I had the spindle ready to install in a few minutes. Like other reviewers I had to replace the mounting screws with another metric 1.25 thread hex head, be careful to purchase the correct length of replacement mounting screws (not too long). The mount for the blade was properly threaded and accepted the old bolts nicely. The bolt holes for the mower deck connection did need to be tapped, so I also purchased a Metric #8 x 1.25 tap (I alread own a tap handle, otherwise you would need a tap handle). The tapping was surprisingly easy as the aluminum threads were easily cut with the steel tap. I used a little bit of olive oil to lubricate the tap. A previous reviewer used an old bolt as a tap, but I would spring for the extra $7.00. To save some aggrivation, I installed the blade onto the spindle before installation, otherwise you have to work underneath the mower deck. The installation consisted of pushing the spindle assembly up from below, hand tightening the four bolts to hold everthing in place, then tightening each bolt a little at a time using a socket wrench. Be careful not to over-tighten as the steel bolt can easily strip the aluminum threads, this would necessitate the use of a locking bolt on the downward side of the spindle. Now install the pulley with the bottom of the bowl-shape facing down, the spindle accepts the locking nut from the old assembly. Be sure to secure the blade (to keep it from spinning) as you tighten the pulley lock nut. I used some rope, but could also have used a pair of locking pliers. Lastly, the instructions call for lots of grease before using the mower. Be sure to grease the spindle before installing the belt cover as it will hide the lubrication tip.

The price is just too good. I bought a stens spindle at the parts ...
I'd give this 5 stars, but I am wondering if it is actually a STENS part.. The price is just too good. I bought a stens spindle at the parts store for $51 dollars then returned it when I saw it here online... MAKE SURE you use GREASE -- there is a grease zerk on this product for a reason. You need to pump grease in it till you see some grease coming out of the zerk. If you don't apply grease, you'll be replacing this in just a few month's time. ALSO MAKE SURE you purchase the Self Threading screws required to install this part on your mower deck. I was surprised how easily the new spindle was able to be installed... I was up and mowing grass just a few minutes after receiving this in the mail. Several times I had to check to make sure the mower deck was really working -- the bad bearings on the previous spindle made such a loud racket - that it was nice to finally have a much quieter tractor again. While I had the deck apart, I also replaced the pulley breaks - the break shoes had fallen off, and my pulleys would continue to rotate long after I had disengaged the mower deck... All in all, I'm a happy customer. I'll change my rating to 5 stars if I ever can verify the manufacturer of this part... ;) Happy mowing.

Made my tractor like new again!!!!
Amazing what a difference these spindles made on my John Deere L130 with the 48" deck. Install was not hard at all, simple hand tools it all it takes to remove and install new spindles. Just to note I also purchased new spindle mounting bolts that I purchased on Amazon. I also added a set of new blades also purchased on Amazon, and a new belt. Basically a cutting deck tune up. The difference between the old spindles and these are amazing to say the least. Immediately after I installed them I tried out my tractor. When I engaged the blades I could not believe it was the same tractor I was using. It's now so quite it is unreal!! I'm still in shock at how smooth it runs now. Super happy!!!
