Backlight needed.
Product works very well and has many settings and has not failed on me. Unfortunately I often have to use a flashlight to see the settings because there is no backlight.

Best timer on the market
I have bought and used MANY of these timers for at least 10 years now. They are so easy to program and you can set them up for every imaginable combination of days and nights.

A very flexible, quality, quiet timer, but with incomplete instructions
This timer seems fairly well designed and constructed. The instructions that come with it, though, are limited and incomplete. Notable features: The timer plugs into a three-prong grounded outlet and it has a single three-prong grounded outlet for a timed device. The outlet rating is for 15 Amps (pure resistive load - not a lamp with a heater element), 10 Amps (1250 Watts) Tungsten (e.g. an incandescent lamp or ballast lamp with an initial electrical surge when first turned on), or 1/2 (0.5) horsepower (e.g. for a motor). It is fairly easy to program the unit with the buttons following the provided instructions, although see below to understand some of the buttons. I will not replicate the instructions here. Google "GE 15150 user instructions" without the quotes to get a PDF copy of the instructions. Each program can be activated for a selectable set of days of the week - any one day, weekdays, weekends, all days, and a few other subsets of the days of the week. This is not documented in the instructions. While in programming mode, press WEEK successively to choose the day(s) on which this program will activate. The unit has an internal battery to maintain its settings. It must be plugged into a wall outlet for five minutes before setting it up. The instructions say nothing about how long it takes to fully charge the battery or how long a charge lasts! The On/Off button can be pushed to set the unit to On (always on), Off (always off), On/Auto (switch on and in timer mode), and Off/Auto (switch off and in timer mode. The unit has a Daylight Savings Time (DST) feature. It is not documented in the instructions. Pressing the Clock/DST button for a few seconds activates DST mode. Pressing it again turns this off. It sets the hour ahead or back one hour, making it easier to adjust for DST. When on there is a TINY +1Hr indicator on the display. Set this on or off according to whether you are on DST before setting the clock. The unit has a Random feature although as of this writing I have not tested it. It is not documented in the instructions. While the unit is on with just the time of day displayed (NOT in program or clock-set mode), pressing and holding HOUR/RND for a few seconds turns RND on or off. A TINY RND indicator in the display indicates the mode is active. I found a YouTube video for a different GE timer that also has a Random function. On that timer, activating RND mode will cause the timer to turn lights on/off in a +/- 30 minute window around your set time (up to 30 minutes before or after the set time.) Hopefully it works the same way on this unit. It probably makes sense to have at least a 30-minute on time if using this feature. I recommend the timer although you may want to print this review and keep the notes with the instructions!

Did I get the right product??
I'm at a bit of a loss to give this product a good review. I ordered three of them. They look exactly like the picture here on Amazon but if you look at this picture, it doesn't have the HOUR/RND button that a lot of reviewers are talking about. (there is a user posted picture with the HOUR/RND button but that's not what I received) From what I can tell, there are two models out there . . . an older 15150 and a newer 15154. Everybody seems to be saying that the newer model has the random feature and that holding the HOUR/RND button for three seconds turns it on. The model pictured above doesn't have the /RND part. Just the HOUR part. The ones I received are like this, no /RND, portion to the HOUR button . . . but on the packaging it clearly lists the part number as 15154 and on the unit itself, the sticker on the back shows 15154. I really want to think that I have a random timer but I can't, for the life of me, toggle the random feature on. I've tried holding the HOUR button down for 3 seconds (actually as long as 10 and 20 seconds as well) along with doing the same with other buttons wondering if perhaps something else might work. Interestingly enough, when I press the reset button down for a few seconds and the unit display goes blank, when it "reboots", for lack of a better term, all of the symbols on the LCD show up for just a second. During this moment I can see an "R" symbol to the right of the time display, similar to where the RND symbol is supposed to appear according to other reviews. I can't, however, seem to make this appear with any combination of button pushes for any duration of time. I'd like to give this timer a better review but because I can't seem to activate the random function and from what the Amazon image looks like, it appears that I got what I ordered (product model # 15154) Has anybody else had this problem? Is there a step that I'm missing? Please comment if you can help me figure these out. The manual says nothing about a random feature, even though it lists both the 15150 and 15154 product numbers. I'm hoping somebody will comment with some helpful advice on how to activate the random feature before I return them to Amazon. Update: 9/16/2012 So I returned one of these to Amazon. They were great about the process and a new one quickly showed up. Sadly, however, the new one was exactly the same as the one I had returned. No /RND function on the HOUR button. Same 15154 product number. At this point I believe the manufacturer has screwed up and provided Amazon with a batch of mislabeled products. I think these timers that I'm getting are the 15150 timers labeled as 15154s. I've changed my review from a one star to a three star because as a timer it works quite well and it seems a little unfair to kill the rating of the product itself for what seems like a manufacturer packaging error. I'll keep trying to return them and get the one with the random feature that's advertized. Amazon - if anybody is reading this, you've got to update the photo for your product on the webpage and return the mislabeled products. My review isn't the only one that is complaining about this particular snafu.

It doesn’t make noise.
It works well. But the instructions are so tiny that I would recommend that you go online and get the instructions. Plus You Tube does have videos on how to do it. My first one only lasted 1 year however. Save your receipt and if it stops working before 1 year contact the manufacturer and they will send you one for FREE!

Good performance for the price.
Works great, I use it to cycle a humidifier on and off throughout the night. I'm not sure if the description gives all the right info, but the one I have can handle up to 20 on/off cycles (40 switches per day). I was of the understanding it could only handle 20 switches per day (10 on/off cycles). Haven't had a problem yet and it's been over a month.

The Daytime savings and Random features are nice. For the price
It's neither difficult or confusing to programme, but I fount it a bit cumbersome as well as time-consuming to programme more than 10 on/off settings or modify the existing settings slightly and frequently because the clock can't go backwards so if I inadvertently pass the time I'm intended to set to, I'll have to go all the way around the clock again to set it right. I wish the clock setting gets improved and allow user to go bak and forth. However, this timer works very well overall. It doesn't look offensive as some timers. The Daytime savings and Random features are nice. For the price, it's a very good buy.

Works well, good value
This little device works well for 2-prong plug devices such as lamps. It takes some reading and experimentation to learn the setup and features but good value for the money.

Small, easy to use and it works
Works as expected, small and easy to configure. It only occupies one socket on an outlet.

Great little timer.
Easy to program. Works perfectly. Battery back-up and digital programming makes mechanical timers obsolete. Make sure you get later version with daylight saving time and random features. I bought 2 more after buying and liking the first one.
