Looks like another homerun
I will preface this review by saying that I have not put this machine to heavy use, I have not had the pleasure to, yet. I have, however, used it on several projects. This is basically an improved Porter-Cable 690. The soft start is a pleasure. The variable speed is a must. The locking mechanism can be finicky, as it can throw off your setting if you don't hold the base and motor when you clamp it down. This can be annoying, but I have learned to work around it. The base is the same as a PC 690. I made my own out of Lexan and drilled a 2" hole to allow the use of larger bits. As far as noise, every router is loud and I always use ear muffs. The collets can be a pain to loosen with the two wrenches, but in reality this is the best method and superior to a shaft lock despite being less convenient. If you orient the wrenches so that there is a small gap between them, you can just press them together with your hand and this will loosen the collet easily and prevent flying wrenches and chipped bits. I purchased mine late in 2009 and it was still assmebled in USA, though I imagine the parts were mostly made in Asia. One tip: the base and motor housing have some grease on them to facilitate movement and prevent galling, but as you know grease is a magnet for saw dust. I wiped most of it off and left on only a thin layer. I haven't had any problems with the Makita tools I own, and I would expect the same from this one!

Old school tool
Like most makita tools they are sturdy although this tool lacks some important detail like the routers base continually leaves black marks on the work piece so you need to come back and sand them out, the on/off switch is not in a handy location and should have a trigger type switch with a lock, the dust port attachment does a pour job of collecting the chips it creates and an upgrade on the routers bit attachment - there is not rotor lock, the wrenches are difficult causing router bit changing to be combersome and the depth adjustment is far from precision! Has a lot of power though but could be made much more user friendly.

Consistent, reliable and excellent quality!
As a long time user and lover of the PC 690LR I was hesitant to try anything different. I've done amazing things with the 690. It's always held up, never let me down. Like any tool that gets heavily used it needs basic maintenance, brushes, cleaning etc... When I started reading about the Makita with its variable speed and more powerful motor, I studied the design and knew it was something I needed to try. Coming from someone who does EVERYTHING on a router, I can firmly say it's awesome! Motor runs out smooth, built like a tank but light enough to throw around all day. It cant be compared to the 690 because it too is just as awesome, they're just different breeds of the same species. I like having both in my shop. Highly recommend!

Not 100% satisfied.
I have number of Makita tools and have always been satisfied with quality. Somehow this router did not impress me with fit and finish as all my other Makita purchases. I cannot complain about its operational capabilities but everything from packaging to the tool external finish does not match my prior experiences with this brand. I agree with another post that using two wrenches to install a bit is very awkward. I found that removing the bit is even worse. The threads are seizing and it requires a lot of force to unscrew the collet. The plate opening on this router is rather small and it does not accommodate larger diameter bits like 1/4" round-over. It is surprising that they did not provide an alternate plate for this purpose. Seems it is included with Router+Plunge Base kit. If you will ever need a plunge base for this router you must buy a kit. Plunge base is not available by itself as an add-on. Plunge base kit comes with a case additional plate and overall more functional tool

Smooth and powerful
A high-quality tool that I've come to expect from Makita. I bought it because I needed a router that would take bits with 1/2 inch shafts. My only disappointment is that the base that comes with the router did not have a hole large enough for my larger bits (e.g. 3/4 inch radius bit). I had to order another base from them as an accessory that had the larger hole. The new base also works for smaller bits, so I'm wondering why they don't just put the large-hole base on the router as the standard? Also, the locking mechanism for the collar takes two wrenches (supplied), which is awkward when changing bits. I'm surprised they haven't come out with a simple locking mechanism. (Even my old Craftsman router has one.) This router has plenty of power for large jobs, and good viewing ports for watching progress. It's easy to control with the handle design/placement. The variable-speed function is handy for different materials, although it takes some trial-and-error to figure the optimum speed. I expect this tool will last many years.

Factory-Reconditioned Makita 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router
After researching customer feedback on all 2 1/4 HP routers I purchased this Makita kit factory reconditioned combo kit. I've had limited use of this router since purchasing a couple weeks ago. Not much more than a few test passes on some scrap oak boards. All components appear to be well made and is it's much quieter and smoother than any router I've used in the past. At this point I can't find any faults. The kit looks to be brand new and the only glitch was it came with 2 of the 1/4" collets and no 1/2" collet. I called customer support and they shipped one out to me right away. This unit will soon be mounted in a router table where it will see most of it's use. I'll try to report back on it's performance once I've completed fabricating my molding and window trim.

Good value
Nice quiet smooth router. It cuts very nice. I have never owned a variable speed router before and it is very handy especially when using larger bits.
