Convenient and more than accurate enough for verifying moisture incursion in motorhomes.
The FLIR MR40 helps me find leaks and moisture intrusion in motorhomes and RVs that I inspect. It has already helped me save one client a boat-load of money and helped me give others a warm fuzzy feeling about the moisture integrity of their coaches. I Identify suspect areas with aFLIR ONE Pro Thermal Imaging Camera for iOS . Then I use a pinless moisture meter, to verify if what I'm seeing is moisture or other just something in the wall/floor that is cooler than the rest of the wall/floor. If I sense moisture with the pinless moisture meter, I use the FLIR MR40 pin-type meter to absolutely verify the quantity of moisture that is present and where it' is centered. Each product has it's purpose and works best, only in combination with the others. By the time I get to the point where I am using this meter, I'm already pretty sure that there is moisture present, where it should not be. This meter just verifies my assumptions and helps me center the source of the moisture incursion. It's a reasonably priced tool, that fits in my pocket and is reasonably accurate. FYI, for what I do, I don't need accuracy to 10 decimal points. But for the price, this meter provides consistent readings that are more than accurate enough to provide my clients with confirmation of the condition of the coach they are about to buy.

It works
This moisture meter works fine and gets into difficult places my larger moisture meter can't go. It has an audible alarm that my ears barely hear because of my hearing loss. It would have been nice of the LED screen was back lit making it easier to see and if it had a hold feature for the moisture reading.

Broke after a few uses
The moisture detection pins broke after only a few uses. When it worked, it was great, however. Much easier to navigate into a tight spot than larger moisture meters.

I use this for home inspections. It is easy to use in confined spaces. Would recommend it.

Needs a backlight
I like Flir products and have always had good results. I'm a little disappointed with this meter. The read out needs a backlight. Hard to read without a backlight. You would have thought Flir would have thought of that before releasing this product.

I REALLY wanted this to work out
so, first of all, I'm a home inspector -since 1996. I was looking for a high-quality reliable moisture meter in a small form factor. As you can imagine, I carry all kinds of stuff on my tool belt. I found a mini IR thermometer which is not as accurate as my higher resolution pistol grip style one I keep in my bag. so that was a big win - I have the bigger one for most uses and the mini when I dont have the big one in my pocket - works out beautifully. just need to get much closer to HVAC registers or the source/surface to get a solid reading with the mini. I have a tone of other stuff in holsters on my toolbelt (think cop-style tool belt). from outlet tester, camera, digital voice recorder, timer, cordless screwdriver (ryobi quick turn is the BEST as it is the only screwdriver out there that has two speeds - life saver when you have to take covers of electrical panels and furnaces etc every single day). The point being that I wanted a much more compact and portable moisture meter. I have several moisture meters - bought several from china directly from the big name global site that also starts with an "A" : ) most of them were so crazy inexpensive I decided to try several out to get an idea of quality and compare to higher end stuff like Protimeter. I had nothing to lose at an average of $8 per unit. One died almost instantly, but I have to say I am impressed with the overall value of generic chinese branded stuff these days. Compared to 10-20 years ago, chinese product quality has gone from absolute c**p to SOME decent stuff - still very hit or miss. bought a more expensive chinese brand here on shmamazon and I'm impressed. I realize that for the established well-known brands - their stuff is mostly made there anyway, but the difference is in the quality control, I suspect. A company like FLIR is generally going to have better quality and specify certain components as opposed to XYZ generic chinese copycat electronics company. And, I think the quality of this item is very good and seems reliable. Pros: this meter is definitely thin - think between standard and mega jumbo sharpie. Its also accurate and trustworthy. cannot easily be switched on to kill the battery. Cons: this thing is ridiculously long. the flashlight is pretty much worthless and they could have trimmed length a bit by excluding that. I would never want to use it except in dire emergencies because I would not want to kill the battery. screen: too small but I can deal. the unforgiveable issue is ...no backlight!!! really great in a crawlspace or attic or dark corner guys. Cap falls off easily created a very stabby scenario. Its happened to me before - not fun. Just someone make a dang moisture meter that is twice the width, uses AA batts and is 5" or under with a backlight. for this price, I am not pleased and after trying to make it work for a while, I gave up. I wish I had returned it. real-life usability is just not there.
