Easy to use; excellent quality
These brass inserts are the perfect combination of material and manufacturing quality for use in securing stainless steel bolts to hardwood. The brass with knife threads easily cut into hardwood. It’s a much more reliable way to securely hold a bracket or other bolted on item to the wood while also allowing the bolt to be removable and refastened if needed. These e-z lok inserts have much tighter tolerances and finish than the cheaper knockoffs I’ve used before. The installation tool in the tool-and-insert kit makes installation very easy with a cordless driver. (Although a less efficient makeshift installation tool can be made with a matching machine screw or bolt and two hex nuts as shown in my photos. What I do NOT recommend is using a flathead screwdriver to install these inserts into hardwood… very slow and painful by hand or even with cordless driver.)

Skip this kit, just buy the inserts
The brass knife thread inserts work well, but require care to insert. The EZ-lok DT-3 installation tool will fail sooner or later, depending on wood hardness and torque applied. The DT-3 is suitable for starting the insert into an appropriately drilled hole, but a threaded rod with a nut serves as a better sacrificial driving tool. In hard maple, overdrilling from 25/65 to 13/32 reduced installing torque without apparent reduction in pullout strength. Save yourself some money - skip the installation kit and buy some threaded rod, nuts and inserts.

solid connection system
I used this tool to repair an expensive bedframe. The knife-edged inserts easily cut into a hardwood (mango). The drill size is an awkward size (33/64) - the system could have been designed for a readily available bit (e.g. 32/64). Ken

Wont work with all wood species
So I was building with hickory and thought these would offer a more durable solution for something like a table that has to have the top come off in order to fit through a door. If you use woodscrews its possible to strip out the hole, these would prevent that. The time comes around to try these inserts and I tested a few out on a scrap piece of hickory I had. The first one broke the installation tool. Snapped it right off. Now before the comments come that I should have backed off, consider that these inserts are supposed to cut their own threads so even when they work perfectly they screw in with some force. Anyway after I snapped the included driver I made my own and used the next size up drill bit. That driver started to bend , so I made one out of stainless steel. That's what it took to drive these in even with a slightly oversized hole. The second complaint is that its nearly impossible to get one to start and stay perfectly vertical. They always want to slip off to one side or the other. Every one I installed ended up crooked. Again before the comments, consider that I am experienced with drilling and tapping threads and the holes were drilled on a drill press. Overall, these are a fantastic idea and they do work, but consider the material. These may work for pine but not hickory. Possibly other extremely hard woods. Also make sure you buy more than you need and practice cause they are difficult to keep straight during installation. Also I recommend making your own driver tool. The included one is incredibly soft and will snap off under any hard resistance. As an addition it was completely impossible to remove or install these with the slot head. It requires a large flat blade driver, bit, or screwdriver. When I did try it the brass cracked and broke, leaving me with what is essentially a theft proof screw head.

Good concept but hardly works
Long story short, the drive bit is a seemingly good concept but practically useless. Long story: I bought the first set for installing inserts for my walnut sideboard. The drive bit broke when I installed the 6th one! I blamed myself of abusing the drive bit with an impact driver. I bought the 2nd set and this time I was super careful not to break it by using another non-impact driver. Fortunately it didn't. But there are two issues with the set: 1), 25/64 drill bit is a bit too small for walnut, I later used a 13/32 one to bore the holes which makes driving the theread inserts a bit easier. 2), the insert was always stuck with the drive bit, making the whole process a hassle. So when you back off the drive bit, the insert unscrews itself as well! You have to use a plier to unscrew the insert from the drive bit first and use a 500-2 bit to drive the insert in instead. What a mess! Oh, that 500-2 was also a bad one. I happen to have some 10-32 inserts from another manufacturer with deeper notch and better threads. When I put a washer between the insert and the drive bit, I managed to drive the other type of inserts into the wood in one shot. I didn't expect the whole process was such a time consuming one. Not only was the whole process a hassle, I also had to repar the beatiful walnut piece at multiple places, which was a total mess. Not recommend for hardwood, might be okay for softwood.

insert tool broke
insert tool broke after only a few uses. I was using wax on the threaded insert and going slow fitting it into oak but it still broke.

Simple to use even for amateur DIY
This kit was super easy to use. I have zero experience with any woodworking. I used this kit on some MDF and then threaded some bolts and wingnuts to make an access panel easier to access. The whole thing looks pretty good, as if it were installed at the factory. Super easy to use for someone with no woodworking skills, and still professional looking. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with very many inserts. This kit (4mm inside diameter) did come with the slotted installation tool though, which sounds like it works better than the threaded install tool.

Used for drawer front attachment
Built some drawers and needed these inserts to attach the finished drawer face to the drawer. Assessed hole depth needed and applied masking tape to the bit. Board was 3/4" so didn't want to go too deep. Bored with bit, installed inserts with the provided tool and it is just what I needed. Less expensive than the local competition, also.

Not quite there.
The main problem with this kit is that it comes with a 25/64 drill bit, which into hardwoods like oak, is too small and the install tool will just shred the top of the insert nut. Even with a 13/32 bit it is tight and the top of the insert is often damaged. ...so either the size of the drill bit needs to be revisited, the insert nut itself needs to be stronger, or it should be noted that this doesn't support use in hardwood and a different product offered in its place. If you are going to use this definitely test it on some spare stock of the same kind of wood you plan to use it with (multiple times). Likely you'll have to buy a new drill bit (or two) and experiment to get the right size. Also, I recommend using this with a drill guide or drill press.

Does the job, try on a scrap, pre-thread the pilot hole or use a different installation tool
Installed 3 of these in a cherry board and 1 in a maple board as a test. The good part: Once installed this does the job. Drill bit seems to be of good quality and threaded inserts are razor sharp. The bad part: 2 of these broke at the interface with the installation tool before I was able to insert them flush with the wood. Brass is fragile and the installation tool is putting too much pressure on only 2 points of the insert. You definitely want to use a threaded insert nut driver or an hex bolt to install the insert as it will distributed the pressure on more surface. An alternative is to use a steel threaded insert of same size to pre-thread the pilot hole so that the brass insert can easily be installed.

Peu utile!

E-Z LOK inserts , for hardwood works great
The kit is a little expensive , but it a nice starter ... after that , you can buy 1/4-20 inserts , 1/4-28 and even the M6 inserts , they all work with the same drill bit and installation tool

Very Disappointing
The drill bit that comes with this kit is clearly too small, I’m building dining table out of white oak, luckily I decided to try these out on scrap wood first. Stripped 3 of 3 I tried to install before they even got close to being flush. I’ll try using a bit bigger drill bit, these may be good for soft woods? But definitely not hard wood. I’ve seen others with an Allen key type socket for installation, likely wouldn’t strip as easily.
