Worthwhile Purchase But Needs Enhancements to Reach Full Potential
I bought this scale in order to get better control of tracking nutritional information, specifically carbohydrates. The product was packaged well in environmentally friendly cardboard specifically designed to protect the product without producing excessive waste. The scale is slim, sleek and shiny. The display on the scale is backlight and a bit difficult to read; it could use brighter backlighting or LEDs. The controls are minimal: on/off/tare and switching between measurement units. The iOS app: There are several apps from the company in the App Store, so it is important to use the QR Code in the package to find the correct app OR visually match the app icon with those in the store. Once installed, the app quickly finds and attaches to the scale via Bluetooth. The app requires the user to create an account for storing entries. The app can be installed on multiple devices and each device can use a single account or separate accounts. When multiple devices are linked to a single account, entries that are tracked sync between devices via the Internet. Sadly, the iOS app is not a universal app. Although it runs on the iPad (which is a device many will use in their kitchen), it just appears in iPhone format. It does not support landscape mode, and it does not support rotation. This is a problem when using an iPad, because most ipad stands work best in landscape mode; and in portrait mode, to keep the iPad plugged in, the bottom of the iPad needs to be placed at the top. The app supports the standard USDA database of foods and seems to include some product entries. Although barcode scanning is supported, so far I haven't scanned a code which returned info on the product; I imagine the database will be populated over time. When a product isn't in the database, the user can add the food and its serving size and nutrition. Once added, the app will return accurate nutritional information for any size serving of the food. To track a food, the user locates the food in the database, optionally places a container on the scale and uses the tare feature to zero out the weight of the container, adds the food, optionally selects the meal, touches a "checkmark," then finally touches a "checkmark" to track the food. It is important to remember to click the "checkmarks" or the food serving doesn't get tracked! It is possible to track a food without the scale, but it is not an intuitive procedure. The user must select the (disconnected) scale, searches for the food, touches an arrow on the display to override the weight, enters the grams, then touches the "checkmark" to track the food. The app totals the day's nutritional consumption on a dashboard in the diary, but does not show nutritional totals for each meal; if meal totals are needed, the user must view the detail of each food and add the desired nutrient total in their head. There doesn't appear to be a way to choose which nutrient totals are displayed on the dashboard; but details of all tracked nutrients are available on a separate screen. A feature that, to me, is obviously missing is the ability to use the scale and app to calculate the nutrition for recipes. It seems like a pretty easy feature to add to the app: create a recipe entry, weight and add all fo the ingredients, specify a recipe title, specify the number of servings, and show the nutritional totals for the recipe and per serving. I really hope to see that feature added in the future. Another missing feature is the ability to export the diary. There is no apparent way to access a web site with the tracked data, and there should be at least an option to export and mail the diary as a tab-delimited or csv text file, or copy it in tab-delimted format to the iPhoone/iPad clipboard. Overall impression: This is a worthwhile device, a great hardware/software combination. What it does, it does well. But the software seems to be in its infancy, and the company has a great opportunity to greatly enhance the software to make it much more useful in the kitchen. Here are enhancements that need to be made to the iOS app: * Make the app universal with true support for iPads, and on the iPad use the larger screen to advantage. * Make the nutrients displayed on the diary's "today" dashboard customizable to those nutrients the user needs to track. * Add customizable dashboard totals by meal so users don't have to mentally add them up manually. * Add the ability to create, save, calculate, and track recipes. * Make tracking foods manually a less cryptic procedure. * Add diary export capability. * Make diary accessible via account log-in to a web site. Would I recommend this product: Yes. If you have a need or desire to track your food intake more precisely, this device will do that for you. What it does, it does well. It is relatively easy to learn and start using, and easily fits into the preparation and serving of a meal. I am hopeful that the apps will be enhanced to add features to make the produce easier to use and even more valuable. The company has a golden opportunity here to set the gold standard for connected food scales and become the major player in the field.

More Convenient (Smaller) Than It Seems; Unknown Ounce Handling
When I received the scale I was pleasantly surprised. The scale feels premium, and is much smaller than photos convey. The product’s photos skew the size by using small bowls and hands to throw off visual proportions. In reality, the scale is hand-sized (granted, I’m larger than most). It’s small enough to throw into a drawer, or keep it on a counter and not take up much space. It can be easily accessible, not necessary to put it away somewhere to be barely used. It’s even travel friendly (just don’t pack heavy items on top of it). Ultimately, the size is much more convenient than the photos convey. The thoroughness of the experience is also great. They didn’t create a product that just works with the bare minimum, they actually care about the user experience, and listen. Older reviews calling for additional features have been addressed. Barcode scanning is now available, the database now contains over 270,000 items. In fact, the database is so extensive it can be difficult to find items in some cases. Trying to merely weigh ground beef can become a daunting adventure. There are listings from Individual supermarkets, lean or not lean types, etc, and each varies in nutritional value (e.g. not all lean types have the same calories). In such cases it ends up being a guesstimate rather than truly informative, due to the overwhelming number of choices. Unfortunately it’s not easy to refine such a database. How would one know which item is most relevant, or discern which data is more accurate? That’s a downside of having a user driven database, users entering product info aren’t prone to quality control. MyFitnessPal’s database reflects that well. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are using the same database. But even if they are, MyFitnessPal integration has not yet been added. Maybe they are working on it, or have their reasons not to (i.e. competitor). In any case, the app and hardware have significantly grown since earlier reviews. The experience is much more accommodating for new customers. —————— One thing I’d like to see changed is how ounces are handled. When measuring in ounces the precision is only 0.04 ounces (i.e. 1 gram). That can’t be helped, all scales have a measurement range, and more precise scales only measure up to about one pound. That’s the trade-off of being able to weigh heavier items (would be great to have a version of the scale that can measure lighter items, some manufacturers sell multiple versions of the same scale with different resolution ranges). Unfortunately, it creates situations where if you are measuring something that is actually 3.14oz ... it would resolve it to 3.12oz or maybe even 3.16oz. In the case of 3.12 mathematically it should round down to 3.1oz, for 3.16 it should round up to 3.2oz. I have personally seen the scale show 3.1 and 3.2 for the same item, not knowing which is more true or if it’s even rounding. What if in reality the scale is actually seeing 3.16 and dropping the last digit (not rounding at all)? The problem is, users have no idea which is happening / what the scale actually sees. When something like food intake is a matter of personal preference and perception. Wouldn’t users like to know if they are slightly over or under (which works out to being off by a few grams)? If over, some would care to take a bit off to meet their goal, so seeing they are slightly over would be good to know. In the app there should be an option to disable the auto rounding for ounces (enable displaying the hundredths or thousandths position). To allow users to know the true measurement, and use their own judgement rather than the scale judge for them. Due to the scale making assumptions / not knowing the true ounces, I took off one star. The scale is truly designed to measure in grams, and converts it to ounces via the software / firmware. So it can be addressed through a software or firmware update. Until then, if you really care to have a better idea of the ounces it’s best to measure in grams and manually convert it. Inconvenient, but in some situations that might actually matter. Ultimately, the option to display another digit or two (since one gram is really 0.035 ounces not 0.04) can be very helpful even if not precise, and should be optional (disabled by default). Another feature that would be nice, perhaps for the next hardware update: rechargeable battery with USB-C connection. The need to purchase additional batteries seems a bit backwards. It makes the otherwise modern / futuristic product seem a bit retro. The convenience of a rechargeable battery many users would appreciate. In any case, this is a well-designed product, accompanied by a well-designed and developed app. Where other companies make half efforts, Etekcity hasn’t. No other smart food scale has a better experience. Even the smart food scales that resolve 0.01g to 500g (0.000352oz to 17.637oz) that seem more precise, are actually inaccurate (and the app experience isn’t as refined nor as extensive). I tested them with items where I already knew the true weight. Only Etekcity’s smart scale was very close to spec, the others were all over the place, with no option to calibrate. Etekcity has created a quality item, and are putting a lot of work into their platform. I look forward to seeing how things develop, and highly recommend this product.

Etekcity Food Kitchen Scale
I like that it’s compact and user friendly both the app and the scale. I’ve only had it for 4 days and so far no complaints.

Included VeSync App is very useful
The scale is very useful but what I like most is the associated VeSync app for food tracking and nutrition information. To access the food database you need to be in the MY FOOD section of “add food” for the search to work best.

Best scale ever
This scale is probably the best I have ever invested into. Comes with a free app to track your food unlike these other companies that have a subscription for everything.

WOW! I got lucky with this when I was looking for kitchen scale.
This is a fantastic product. The app has a HUGE food database. It’s also helping me create a well balanced diet. I highly recommend this nutrition scale. And I also got the LEPULSE Bathroom Scale. I highly recommend both of these.

Great little scale
This scale is a good find - it’s not too expensive and it does the job. I find it to be pretty accurate and it’s also easy to clean in case you spill something on it. The only downside is that it tends to turn off quickly which is can be a pain. I would recommend if you just need a scale without any frills.

Very nice
Looks nice, easy to use. I only wish the dish on the top had a spout. That would be perfection. I will enjoy using this scale after retiring my 30 year old scale.
