Just what I need for splitting!
Great heft to this wedge. Had a downed tree bucked up and have large rounds to split. This wedge, along with a sledge that I ordered, make splitting the rounds much easier than with an axe. Couple taps and this thing is ready to hit. Couldn’t be happier.

Every bit as good as it should be.
I bought this to bust some very stubborn oak blocks with very interwoven fibers and knots that were completely resistant to busting with a standard splitting maul. I used an angle grinder to shave the bottom bevel off so that the edge is nearly flat to the body of the wedge so that it can actually bite into the wood, worked like a charm. This wood is ridiculous and even though it's still tough this wedge is making it possible where as before it wasn't.

Just LOOK AT IT!
Does this thing even NEED a review? Holy holy, just LOOK at it. The shape alone says “I WILL split whatever I WANT”. Buy it. Split with it. Rest in the knowledge that you have done this thing. Maybe have a beer.

is very helpful when cutting down trees

Good steal and good size. Function is an issue with hard woods.
These are useful most of the time but getting then started in large hard oak is an issue. The powder coat is slippery on fresh cut wood. When it's driven into the edge of the first wedge angle they have a tendency to just pop out with the next hit. If using on a tough knitted truck or with a knot they almost never go past the little wedgelet features making the last 2/5ths of the wedge un-accessible. Either the angle is too steep on that feature or the powder coat is just too slippery. Still plenty useful when 2 or more wedges are needed as long as there is at least one other wedge that can stay in the crack.

Exactly the right size/weight/shape
I bought two and then bought two more 2 years later. I split TOUGH wood (dried elm and dried osage orange) with these. Just as it should be, the wedge steel is softer than the sledge such that chipping is not an issue.

it's alright.
pretty beefy tool for busting apart some serious logs. got stuck in a log in my backyard though so not that impressed.

Dumbhead
I may just be a dumbhead. It's possible, you may be one too. Let me qualify my comments and my review by disclosing to you that my grand total experience in 56 years of life, using a steel wedge to split a log, is zero. Nonexistant. None. Zip. I have split several logs with the 26 ton splitter in my driveway however. And a few years ago, I bought a Fiskar maul and I split some "logs" for firewood. But today I get a text that my neighbor has a large limb down, and I go to investigate, and she does indeed. Happily, no things were harmed in the falling of this limb, and the city had already dutifully removed the branches that were in the road and on the sidewalk. So, after checking with my neighbor, it's my turn! (I'm going through a Paul Bunyan phase this fall, sans beard and plaid, for whatever reason, and I just cannot seem to satisfy my craving to "chop wood.") This is a sizeable tree. It's 6 feet across at the ground. And...I'm not a botanist or an arborist, but from a quick check on the interwebs, I believe I've got myself some sort of ash. I'm in Louisville, Kentucky, and we DO MAKE baseball bats here, and if memory serves me - many of them are made of ash? I think so. I don't know if any Louisville Sluggers have been made from the tree in my neighbors yard this week, but I digress. The biggest cross section I have to deal with is 21 inches across. Wait...I'm remembering now - isn't ash really hard, and high tensile strength? But no problem, right!? I mean, my two shiny new Estwing Sure Split Wedge - 5-Pound Wood Splitting Tool with Forged Steel Construction & 1-7/8" Cutting Edge - E-5 , Blue - LITERALLY just showed up yesterday. Funny how things work out like that sometimes in life. I bought them for a firewood project at a non-profit I'm associated with, but voila - it's GO TIME at the neighbors. And in my mind, maybe...JUST MAYBE, I have absolutely no idea how to use these things. (Made the mistake of hitting Submit before I was done, and it may take "days"!? for the review to be approved? Wow. OK, more on this shortly.)

Solid, heavy & splits logs well
Solid piece of kit & I’ve used it twice but the chisel tip edge has already got 2 small dents in it… probably because the wedge bounces out of the logs if they are very hard like the knotted beech I was splitting & hits the hammer I was using.

Removing stumps? Get this.
This review is for using the wedge on tree-stumps, still in the ground. I bought this as I had three fairly large Leylandii stumps to get rid of, and didn't fancy paying someone a fortune to do it. This little wonder does the job - but be warned, if you are working on stumps in the ground, good as this wedge is, you will need to put in some hard work. You will also need something suitable to drive the wedge through. I strongly recommend a proper long-handled 10lb sledgehammer. A regular carpenters hammer, or a short-handled lump-hammer are simply not going to be up to providing the heft needed to get this wedge through a tree-stump. However, if you are just splitting sawn logs, you may get away with a smaller hammer, and indeed a lighter wedge. I found the best technique is to put two saw cuts, an inch or so deep, at right-angles, to make a cross on the flat top of the stump. This is to make a 'start' for the splitting wedge. Drive the wedge down through the centre of the stump. You may reach a point where it will go no further, or is below the point where you can continue hammering it. At this point it will also not want to come back out of the stump - ie, is wedged in. At this point a decent crow-bar comes in handy. Start again on one of the other cross cuts, then repeat. You'll end up with a stump in four sections. Of course, you'll still need to get under it to cut through the roots which will be holding it into the ground, but this is a lot easier when the main stump is in four pieces. This is a very useful bit of kit. Extremely robust, it literally took a big hammering and came through without any ill effects. It is made from forged steel - which means it won't shatter or crack.

....improved personal log splitting ability...
......usually use a conical type wedge, so my accuracy of hitting this new wedge was not so good...visually my eye has been tuned to hitting a shorter round target...am sure this will improve with use....so been locating the wedge with a heavy hammer before striking with the maul....usual problems with knots on large rounds but otherwise very efficient and does the job well......

Splitting the difference
Product is good splits seasoned & unseasoned wood well, being using it a day. Getting another one, in case it gets wedged in; got a small axe 2 mauls , a saw and chainsaw. However in conjunction with my 3kg sledgehammer, this is by far the easiest way to split large logs
