Stable base for heavy sharpening

I use this base to hold 4" DMT whetstones and sharpen chisels and planes. These heavy items can move around an unsecured sharpening system. Plus the DMT stones are used wet which makes the table top slippery unless you are a lot neater than I am. I was very satisfied with the plastic base. It never moved even when placed on wet formica. The elevated height allowed me to guide the tool along the edge and to flatten the chisel backs without hitting fingers on the table top. Eight rubber washers slip over plastic feet. Sounds flimsy, but its not. I would recommend gluing the rubber feet on at some point just so they don't get lost. It also lets one store the diamond plate without scratching other surfaces or damaging the plate bottom. The diamond stone came with a non-skid pad, but it would not hold a piece of plate glass still unless the table top was perfectly flat (and most are not). The main disadvantage to the holder is that the stone cannot be easily flipped over. One plastic end must be removed and then reinserted. Maybe a 15 second job, but if you are going to use both sides in succession, it's inconvenient. I wish I had bought a coarse/fine combo instead of a fine/x-fine. Money well spent.

Could use a litle more traction. does what is expected

I live in an apartment and after attempting to sharpen some knives using other means with the DMT sharpening stones, I decided for safety reasons I needed to get a base. The base itself comes with rubber stoppers you have to install both at the base and where larger stones would sit. It is elevated comfortably enough above the surface it sits on that sharpening has become significantly easier. It does slide a little however on a kitchen counter top. I added some weight to the sides to help hold it down and that seemed to help it sit still better. I kind of wish the base itself was heavier so that I would need to do this every time but it still allows me a much better surface to sharpen my knives.

Excellent sharpening aid - worth the $15 or so

This is just about the perfect height for sharpening all kinds of stuff. So far I've sharpened kitchen knives, pocket knives and straight razors with this. It enables one to get an excellent bevel on a straight and to carefully control the bevel on kitchen knives and the like. I've not used any kind of jig, it's all by hand. The rubber feet on the bottom hold the stand steady and the rubber feet under the stone anchor the stone in place. Finally, there is a handle on the bottom of the stand that allows one to hold the base with whichever stone you might require and move the surface over a stationary item. I've done this with waterstones in order to get a flat surface. Works great, I'm very pleased.

Not for all stones

I purchased this to hold my sharpening stones. The description says it holds ALL 6X2 and the other sizes. It will only lock down the DMT sizes. I have the full size Shaptons and an Atoma plate and this holder will not work. I thought it had a sliding "jaw" that would lock pretty much any stone. Not the case. I really wish it did work because it was designed well in that it securely anchors the plate and has a handle on the bottom when you turn it over to hold it while lapping a stone.

Does what it says, just not quite what I wanted

I bought this to accompany a set of DMT W6EFC Three 6-Inch Diamond Whetstone Models in Hard Wood Box. It holds the whetstones in the center of the base leaving a lot of extra exposed base on each end that kind of got in my way. It is clearly designed to accommodate a few different sizes of stones. It also had a tendency to slide around unless I secured it in some fashion. I eventually ended up sharpening a wood chisel then using it to fashion a new wooden base that was custom fit to the stones and hooks over the edge of the table to prevent sliding. I no longer have this base. You may not experience these issues if you use it with larger stones or in a different fashion than I.

GREAT item, NO customer service

I ordered this and a combination diamond stone but they arrived loose in a box. Fortunately their individual packages prevented any damage. However the duo base requires 12 rubber cushions and only 10 were in the package. I sent two emails to DMT about this and received NO response. Not even an acknowledgement to the emails. I was able to find similar cushions and the stone with base work like a champ. I tried to make Amazon aware of this but their website will only let you 'return' items. I only want to make them aware of the lack of communication from the manufacturer and this review area is the only apparent avenue to do that.

Convenient Accessory

This holder gives good knuckle clearance and will lock their DuoSharp stones in place should you want to use the stones on blades too long for the stone (It has a handle on the bottom to use for this). You can also use it as a rest for their DiaSharp stones since the feet on those stones are non-slip. I do think that it's a bit overpriced for what it is but it is handy.

Costly but ideal for its purpose.

Overpriced but if you want to use the DuoSharp bench stones without having a fabricate a holder, then this is the only solution unless you want your stone to slide around whilst you're sharpening your blades.

Great Essential Accessory for DMT Stones

Extra base for DMT stones. Great product that is very intuitive to use. Probably will be my go-to diamond sharpening field stone. Base makes it so easy to use with the Global knives and various assorted chisels and plane blades that are constantly being sharpened. As before to any woodworker I would recommend that a series of 11 - 15 - 20 - 25 - and 30 degree blocks be handy/fabricated on the mitre saw and always handy to register the angles of sharpening on the bench stone/base. Results are faster and picking the optimum angle for your work on wood/food greatly enhances the experience of using sharp tool for the job.

Best Bench Sharpening Stone Base: Almost Two Years of Use and Still Performing as Great as Day One!

This is an awesome sharpening stone base / holder. Works perfectly with all my DMT DuoSharp stone and even holds my other non DMT stones in place. Doesn't pin them down but can place the DMT stone holders in the proper area and with the no slip base of this holder... it does a fantastic job. Absolutely love the hand grip on the bottom. Made sharpening my axe a breeze! Have been using this product for almost two years now and it still works / looks like new. At this price point... it cannot be beat.
