Good variety

I like this small set of black and white colored pencils. I use black quite often to outline forms while coloring and trying some different tones of black provides more creativity. I think they’re good and I don’t find them to be as scratchy as the 120 set of the derwent artists pencil set produced under the same umbrella. Who knew?

These colors are new and not included in the 120 set

If you enjoy the artist pencil line, which comes in 120 shades, you will be happy with these six additional new tones. Please remember these are a thick and hard core pencil. This set can also be a good test run for you if you want to try the line out, since you won’t have dupes should you decide to expand to the full other 120 shades available.

A nice addition. True warm and cool black and white.

Obviously you need a larger set of pencils, but this adds to the sets you have. I think its not worth it for coloring books, but if you are actually drawing they are very good idea. They are the Derwent ARTIST set, they have a different feel than Prismacolor or Derwent Coloursoft or Drawing.. It's a harder formulation. Yet they aren't like Polychromous either. I want to say they are more scratchy, but that sounds unpleasant and they are very pleasant to work with. You want to use technques more like cross hatching and scumbling rather than blending. You can use a tortillon. You need good paper with a slight tooth. I wouldn't say that they have color, so much as that there's a traditional black and white, and then also a cool white and cool black, and a warm white and a warm black that are very noticeably warm and cool. the whites are true whites, not creams, and the black are true blacks, not dark grey.

Perfect for grey paper

It's the great Derwent quality, they come sharpened in a tin with a pencil sharpener. They feel a bit smoother than the drawing pencils in the orange tins, the same as ones that come in 6 piece sketching set with a regular black and white. If you're looking to make this a gift I'd pare this with aStrathmore STR-412-109 50 Sheet Toned Gray Sketch Pad, 9 by 12" orMi-Teintes Pastel Pad, Gray Tones, 9"X12" Fold Over so they can be used right away. These work on the smooth black sketch paper pads too. Raven and Pure would be the closest to the drawing set black and white, Forrest has a green tint and oyster a slight pink tint, Midnight has a blue tint but reflects slightly red when black paper is tilted in the light, Arctic looks even whiter than Pure. Use them where you might use black and white charcoal, chalk, or Conte but don't want the powder. I would recommend using fixative on finished work. In the picture I sampled the pencils on white, black, and toned grey paper. Use them where ever you'd use a black or a white charcoal or pastel pencil but don't want to deal with all the powder.

Lacks high pigmentation.

I've used Primsmacolor for years and was floored at how much they wanted for one white pencil! Or of course I can buy a set of 12 for a slightly higher rate but then I would have them taking up space forever. ... Why not 3? Or 3 white and 3 black? Anywho... Used this on some art and it did not 'pop' out the way a white Primsmacolor pencil would. Not sending them back but still not 100% happy. Guess I can look forward to spending $5 or more on one pencil. Used a blueish white Primsmacolor to finish this piece.

I love Derwent! All of the pencils are amazing! The blacks are black and the whites are white. They feel amazing on all different types paper. No problems sharpening them. Delivery was on time and no lead damage either!! Everything in tact...YAY! I would buy again and recommend.

Catboy Loves Black and White

These Black and White Colored Pencils rock, there are different shades of white and black, so they are great with mixing and overlapping. It is so much cheaper just buying this pack of black and white colored pencils than having to constantly buy new colored pencils just for the black and white. 5/5 Would totally order these again!

3 shades of white and 3 shades of black- make your black and white drawings more interesting. Or shade and accent black ink drawings. A chalky waxy mix.

Nasty but unfortunately not cheap.

I've recently become keen on using coloured pencils as a medium and have treated myself to several sets. I was keen to try this little set out as they aren't included in the other ranges, are lightfast and thought the tinted blacks and whites might be useful. On opening them I wasn't very impressed by the build quality or presentation. The painted ends were lumpy, chipped and grubby and the ends looked chewed up by being sharpened very roughly. This seemed careless and odd for a set that claimed to be "of finest artists quality" on the pack. They did sharpen well to a good point with the included sharpener but I was underwhelmed by their performance. The whites are very hard leaded so it is almost impossible to shade with them without indenting the paper but are very transparent which makes them unsuitable for final details. The blacks are slightly softer but of equally low pigment. The Raven is more like a dark grey, the Midnight is lighter than other brands Indigo and the Forest is far more green than black. Not "highly pigmented pure colour" as it says on the box. (Even my inexpensive Lyra set of blacks, greys and white are far more highly pigmented than these.) This left me in a bit of a quandary as I find they are too hard to layer easily but far too transparent for final details as far as I am concerned. Plus the tinted blacks go noticeably bright green or blue if you layer white over them. The only upside I can dredge up for this set is they came in a nice sturdy tin with a flimsy but effective plastic sharpener. I had hoped that Derwent had decided to return to the high standards that they had when they were owned by Rexel Cumberland but this sadly does not seem to be the case. ( This isn't nostalgia, I own some vintage sets I bought from their factory shop and have been horrified by the smaller size and lower quality of the current open stock I've recently bought to replace favourite shades. ) Oh well, I will stick with European brands who manage to produce nicely presented, good quality pencils for a better price rather than being disappointed by Derwent and recommend others do the same.

Lovely creamy, bendable and lightfast selection of pencils

These pencils are a lovely extra selection to add to my Derwent Drawing pencil set. They have a creamy laydown and lovely for blending, this is packaged in a lovely wee metal tin and 4 are subtle coloured shades, 2 blacks, a green and blue tinted pencil, and 2 white which are very lightly tinted, with blue and pink, the other 2 pencils are just original black and white. These are lightfast too, which for artists, is an important consideration when purchasing pencils. I have given a star less than full marks, not for the pencils which are great, they certainly would score 5 stars, but the sharpener provided, though it can be used for normal sized graphite sketching pencils, this doesn't fit these pencils.

Sharpener provided cannot be used with these pencils.

The pencils are typical of Derwent tinted products. The sharpener is for 7 mm pencils. These are 8 mm pencils, so do not fit the sharpener. Derwent use this tin for other pencils, and always supply the same sharpener. Here there is a mismatch.

Defective case and chipped pencil

I’m disappointed in the quality of this product. The case doesn’t stay closed (it just pings open) and one of the pencils was chipped. I tried to do exchange it for a new one, but for some reason Amazon doesn’t allow you to exchange the same product. Not impressed at all.
