Great for Bassoon & Oboe Reeds
Purchased this for my teenage son. Reeds are so fragile, and this works well for his bassoon and oboe reeds. I was kind of hesitant about the price and quality, but it is worth it. He has his Reeds in a safe, dry place. The case fits inside his instrument cases as well. Definitely recommend.

Does what it's supposed to
After studying in California where the weather is relatively constant, I moved to Germany where one's reeds are exposed to the humidity, temperature, and air pressure changes that come with the gamut of weather in a years' cycle. Most frustrating for me was having the heater dry out my house in winter so that each morning all of my reeds would be bone-dry and warped wide-open. I'd have to pinch the wires shut to be able to play on them, but after about 20 minutes of warm-up, I would have to pinch the wires open again and constantly adjust while I played. A reed that had great response and flexibility one day would break my heart the next. I also found that reeds which treated me great in Germany weren't nearly as playable in California. Tired of having my practicing marred by the inconsistency of my reeds from day to day, I bought this reed case. I assumed it was a gimmick, but seeing as it was so inexpensive I figured I'd give it a try. So far I am very happy with it. A reed left in the case overnight will have the same qualities the next morning. I am still somewhat apprehensive about leaving my reeds in any airtight environment, but I think the humidity packet must be doing its job of absorption because even after having played on all 5 reeds in the case before putting them away for the night, there does not seem to be excess moisture built up inside the case or on the reeds. Still, I make sure brush my teeth before I play and to clean my reeds out with pipe cleaners and dry them off after I play on them to avoid any sort of gnarly bacteria situation. Last weekend I traveled abroad for an audition. When I arrived, all 5 of the reeds in the case had the same tone and response that they did at my house in Germany. (Not that I brought any reeds in a different case in order to compare... I was a little more preoccupied with the audition than with the scientific process.) Unfortunately, the case did nothing for my double-tonguing or finger technique and I ended up totally screwing up the Beethoven 4 excerpt (crap!)

Works well. No more wasting money on reeds because of mildew
My son has had to throw away a few reeds prematurely due to mildew from his previous case. This case works perfectly and saves our investment in reeds

very good
I do think these cases make a difference, even if it is subtle. First, I'm a bassoonist. Case is nice and big to give tons of room to breathe, stable and sturdy, and the pins are not solid but have channels so air can get in the tube. Reeds seem to be the same day after day. In the early process of making a reed, breaking it in, and letting it stabilize, I think these cases can prevent some of that. Often I open the case in the morning and all of my reeds start immediately crackling like newly formed blanks do. This suggests that they haven't aired out and adjusted or settled in overnight. However once reeds are completely stable and settled (wouldn't crackle as they dry out anymore), I have found this case to prevent warped corners and other strange humidity effects. At the same time, the case is about as expensive (or cheaper) than the basic fox plastic case so you might as well try it. Do be careful that you open the cases at least once a day to be safe - they will mold otherwise, even without the humidity packs in there - they seal air tight. Also, I'd like to be able to choose the humidity pack that comes with a new case, I use the 54%. I use this one because I found that it just keeps the reeds stable, without having them almost soaked. One more caveat with this though is that you will need to bring your water with you. I played an audition where I had put the wet/soaked reed in the case for the ~10 minutes walk around before you play. When I got on stage and pulled the reed out the case had done a wonderful job of drying it out!

5 stars for how well they work, 1 star for the price
It looks like this is a single Boveda humidity pack. These are used for other applications as well, such as in cigar humidors. $4.95 is extremely expensive for a single pack. If you look up Boveda 72% humidity packs on here, you can get packs of 10 for $12.99.

Good case
This is a good reed case. It is not miracle worker, however. It will not turn bad reeds into good reeds, but it will maintain your reeds and keep them consistent and working the same from day to day. The humidifier packs last about 2 months. The case is a lot smaller than I imagined, and fits well in my bassoon case, though it may not fit in a smaller oboe case. I only keep three bassoon reeds in the case at a time because if two bassoon reeds are set next to each other in the case the corners of the reeds touch and it is very cramped. Five oboe reeds, however, should fit in there without touching each other because bassoon reeds are considerably larger than oboe reeds. Overall it is a good case.

Keeps Reeds in "ready to go" condition.
Purchased Rico cases for my son and daughter. They play alto sax and clarinet. We live in Arizona where the humidity can get down to as low as 2% which can dry out, warp and damage reeds. During the Monsoon season it can get really humid. We have both extremes here, but mostly low humidity. The 73% RH packet keeps the reeds in "nearly" ready to play condition. Just a few seconds in his lips and its ready to go. Currently my son is using Rico Royal reeds and my daughter uses Vandoren and Rico Select reeds. The price is comparable to local music stores, but no sales tax. If I were just buying one, I'd buy it locally because the shipping costs. The pack comes sealed in a paper-foil package like those hand wipes you sometimes get at restaurants, so you can buy several and store them until its needed. I bought the replacement pack because we would be needing it and to get free shipping (I was short a few bucks).

Not designed for bagpipe reeds
Got this to store bagpipe reeds. Bagpipe reeds apparently have a much narrower staple than oboe/bassoon, so I had to shave down the little posts in order to get them to slide down on. Could also probably use rubber bands to attach the reeds. Also, the case is not airtight, so the humidity control pack dries out very quickly. I keep the case in a ziplock bag which helps.
