I Really Wanted to Love It!
After getting my colorist’s blessing to buy Clairol Root Touch Up during lockdown to bridge my professionally-colored mane, I have since kept the bigger-box version of this on hand in a pinch. When I saw this came in a pre-mixed brush-tipped applicator, I had to try it. Yes—I was wary of all the poor reviews, and yes—my roots are mostly grey-to-silver; so I was prepared for disappointment. But I took the recommendation of a professional in the comments here and washed my hair just prior to applying, using hot water and not rinsing cool so as to keep the cuticle open. I applied the product and absolutely loved that it seemed thinner and easier to brush into each part I made, and I got all the way around my head, leaving about 25% in the tube for another application. I clipped up my hair and did household tasks for a little over an hour. The product rinsed more easily than the thicker, mixable version, and I followed up by applying conditioner to the lengths of my hair, then rinsed with cold water. I tied my hair back in clips to air dry it over night, then awoke to examine the color. I’ll say the coverage was 80-90% successful. I see small bits of grey at one side of my temples—but the overall read is decent, if not slightly lighter/less intense than the mixable Clairol Root Touch Up product. I bought two tubes of this, so I’ll probably use it again, and simply be more attentive to my problem areas. The form factor is FAR more convenient than having to mix the product, so I’m probably not the first to beg Clairol to keep the brush applicator and somehow improve the product within. But it’s probably not going to work because mixing activator with color likely benefits from being “fresh” rather than pre-mixed. I’ll also consider puting a cap on my color-applied head and applying heat next time to see if that drives better coverage. So it’s not a fail for me. I’d recommend leaving the product on longer, applying it on heat-opened hair cuticles if you want to try to make this work. It’s a neater way of doing root touch-up, without a doubt.

I’m not sure why there are so many mixed reviews of this. I’ve been a loyal user for 10 years on the 10 minute version you mix & then apply. This is so easy to apply & gives great coverage of my gray around my crown, sides & roots. Yes it may not last as long but I like how easy & no mixing. Plus, I sometimes just need a little bit so this is just perfect. I originally bought the 2 pack & only received one in the package l. I reached out to seller & was sent a 2nd one within a couple of days. Love this product!

Perfect for brown roots with just a little gray
I was hesitant to buy this at first because there were several one-star reviews. It sounds like this product might not work well for someone with a lot of grays, but it actually worked perfectly for me-- no root line whatsoever and no dryness or damage!. My natural color is light to medium brown with a few grays,and I have recently gone medium auburn. I prefer this to the permanent cover-up which actually gets a little too dark for me. This is also easier to travel with since there is no mixing and a better value because you can use one tube multiple times. If you don't have a lot of gray hair but want to cover stray grays and/or add a little red to brown hair, this product works!

Good quick fix for root cover
I bought the auburn color, it matched close enough for a quick fix for gray roots. The coverage is not as good as the root cover up kit, but this is semi permanent. The applicator tube is super easy to use. It is a little odd to rise with out washing, but you get used to it.

There is no mixing required, it ready to apply! and I like that it comes in auburn and it s great for front and side touch ups which seem to fade fast.
