Costs less than Thermapen for a reason
This item is cheaper than the Thermapen, which is why we were interested in it. It has the advantage of being waterproof (it is advertised as waterproof -- we have not submerged it to see) whereas the Thermapen advertises itself as being "splashproof". It is somewhat larger/thicker than the Thermapen but weighs almost the same, and does not have the feature where it turns on and off when you open and close the probe, which was something we liked about the Thermapen. Instead you press a button to power it on and off. It has a slightly cheaper feel -- fit and finish. It is made in China, vs the Thermapen which is made in the United Kingdom. I would say the biggest issue with this item is that it is advertised at the time of this writing (Aug 2013) thusly: ---------------------------- TCT572-R Color: Red Features: -Thermometer.-Waterproof.-Recalibratable.-4.25" Probe with 1.5 mm reduced tip.-3-Second response.--58 to +572 Fahrenheit ---------------------------- We are seeing 6 -7 second response times consistently. This thing NEVER reads in 3 seconds (unless you are measuring room temperature and it does not have to change). I wrote the seller and they responded by saying the manufacturer says 3-6 seconds. Well, ours ALWAYS takes at least 6 seconds, so it seems a bit slower to us than the Thermapen. This may or may not be a problem, depending upon how fast you need your thermometer to be. Fahrenheit or Celsius: Both can do either, but this device has an easy push-button setting and the Thermapen is harder to set. Light: This one has a light that can be turned on for reading in the dark. The Thermapen does not, that I know of, but I never noticed because I never had a need for it. Battery: To change the battery unscrew the tiny screw on the top rear of the device and pull out the little side panel. Our device has a model number of TCT572 and uses 2 batteries of type: CR2032 The device has this information printed on the side for easy access to the information. It also has a little USDA food safety chart with types of meat and temperatures for well done, medium, and rare. Our experience with this seller was fairly reasonable, but not as good as the customer service we received from Thermapen. We actually sent back an old, out-of-date model and were willing to pay for repair. Thermapen responded with an immediate replacement, no questions asked on our old model, at no charge. I thought this was another point to consider, that Thermapen's customer service was fantastic and they stood by their products to that extent. That said, this is a reasonable device that will do the job for a lower cost. We will update this review if we have problems with durability over time with it.

Buy your own batteries!
I have another of these and it has been working well for over 7 years. I have been really happy with it. So I decided to buy an additional one for camping. The package arrived the day I was leaving and I took it with me. I put in the batteries that were supplied and nothing worked. Side note - like others have mentioned in these reviews, it is not clear how to open the battery compartment from the instructions. It says to remove the screw and then open the "side". What they mean is pull out the "end". Anyway, I was frustrated when it didn't work and I was just going to return it, but had thrown away the box it was shipped in. I would have had to get a new box in order to ship it back. I pulled out my voltmeter and tested the batteries, one read 1.2V, the other 2.2V (should be 3.0V). No good. I had some new 2032 batteries that I put in and then it worked. I think the best thing for the company to do is stop shipping batteries with the unit. It is otherwise a great product.

Works as advertized but has very poor instructions.
It's a little bigger than I expected, but the thermometer seems to work well so this thermometer will do what you want. Having said that, the instructions leave a whole lot to be desired. I surmise it was written in a non-English speaking country. Print is very small. To replace the battery it says, remove screw, slide cover off, insert two batteries. That's about it and the only helpful part of that is "remove screw." It took several minutes to figure what to slide off. Several more where to put the batteries and how to "puzzle" them into place. Wen I opened it up a rubber o-ring came popping out. What the heck is that for? I wound up putting it around the slide. Still don't know for sure if that's where it's intended to go. This problem with instructions happens when your engineers do not have a rounded education.

Highly recommend CDN ProAccurate Folding Thermocouple Thermometer
I wanted an instant-read thermometer with wide temperature range. Accurate temperatures are required for making Greek yogurt, cheeses, bread dough ingredients, as well as safe cooking temperatures for meats & poultry. My other thermometers were slow to register. This thermometer has made these tasks SO much faster; I can test several things within seconds, just by wiping the probe clean with damp cloth before temping.
