Excellent tool, best buy for the money
This is the best drill you can buy for the money. My last Black & Decker drill just now broke after 15 years. The switch broke, but the motor was just as strong as ever. To put it in perspective, I have 6 drills (counting 4 cordless), 2 of which are 1/2 inch capacity Black & Decker units purchased 15 years ago in Walmart. The other one is still working and that must be some kind of record. This newer drill does not have a hammer switch on top, but the only place I ever used that was to drill holes in concrete with masonry bits. If you do a lot of that, it probably is not the best choice. This drill is very strong and delivers a lot of torque so it isn't what you need for light duty jobs. You need a strong arm and good grip as you would for any drill built to deliver maximum power (no adjustable slip clutch) and it can twist your arm if you don't time the release or reduction in power to coincide with the end of the drive/drill cycle. I drive a lot of torx (star) head T-20 and T-25 deck screws using a magnetic bit holder and drill holes with bits up to a foot long and use a lot of spade bits for holes up to 1-1/2 inches. If you don't back off in a timely manner, the screws will sink too deep. I don't pamper my tools and I much prefer a keyed chuck like this drill has for better holding power and durability. If you can't afford more than 1 drill you will spend extra time working the chuck key while swapping bits out. It is a little noisier than some drills because of the straight cut gear reduction, but this also reduces amperage flow at low speeds and increases motor life. The redesigned gear reduction system is probably the main difference in this drill and my 2 older ones. Hopefully it will last as long as the one it replaced. The cord insulation is softer and more pliable than the old units which makes it a little easier to manipulate in tight places in cold weather. This is an excellent choice for workloads which drain batteries on a cordless drill. Even my best cordless drills will drain 2 batteries on a hard day. This drill will do the same amount of work as my best cordless drills but you have to drag an extension cord around which is physically a little harder than lifting the extra weight of the battery on a cordless. That's the trade off. I don't know of any line of tools that delivers as much bang for the buck as Black & Decker. Recommended.

Very powerful and light
I have used a similar sized battery powered drill. It takes a large heavy battery. As long as you can plug it in, this drill solves all the problems with battery powered drills.

Different but same
This drill has incredible torque under slow RPM's. I had an old black and decker 1/2" drill made from metal that was forged in the fires of a great mountain. Over the years, it took a beating. Unfortunately, I was drilling a hole in a hard to get to piece of steel and allowed the drill to drift sideways...snapping the main shaft right in half. Apparently, the scroll that came with the drill was not prophesying when it said, "No matter what, thy RPM will be 450." I ordered this as its replacement. Yeah, well, it is not the drill of yore but it has done every job I have set for it. I do not like the variable speed trigger. Sometimes, when I am on top of the drill trying to move my large metal drill bit very slowly, I apply a bit to much pressure and speed the drill past what I intend. I have drilled lots of steel, soft wood, hard wood, aromatic wood and plastic and it did a wonderful job. The adjustable handle is a joke and feels like it is going to break off. It has slipped off several times when using the drill. I think a stud that allows you to screw a handle in on top and sides would be superior. That was what the older drill had and it spoiled me. It did take a few seconds to set up before each use but it was solid.

I love this drill
I had a 7 Amp Black & Decker drill for at least a decade, abusing it, and finally burnt it up by drilling holes through railroad ties. I bought a Dewalt 8.4 amp drill to replace it, thinking it would be stronger. It wasn’t even close. Even being halfway burnt up, my old drill still was able to power through when the Dewalt locked up and started smoking. So I went ahead and ordered this one, which was very like my old one. I started drilling and the new Dewalt locked up. I switched drills with the bit still stuck in the railroad tie and this drill took off and easily finished the job. Obviously, I am returning the Dewalt. In fact, I’m going to order another one of these just in case they stop making them.

The right tool for the task at hand.
This is an excellent drill. But you need to pay attention to what you are drilling, it is not recommended for steel or concrete. I was drilling wood with an auger bit, my 1/4 inch drill motor did not have enough torque, it would bind. It was a new bit so I was sure that was not the problem. This drill drilled over 100 holes with the same bit in less than two hours. I spent more time putting wood into my work table clamp than I did drilling. The flutes on the auger could have been longer and would have made the job faster, but having the ability to reverse the direction of rotation allowed for easy chip removal and saved me from having to purchase a bit with a longer set of flutes. The price was right, it comes with a 2 year warranty and registering the warranty is fast and easy. Would I buy it again? Sure, after the warranty runs out. I have used B&D products for years, I have never had any issues with any of them.

Appears as if it may have been used
The outer box was in good condition but the actual drill box was crushed and appeared to have been taped shut like it was used or was a display model in a brick and mortar store. Additionally, the chuck was missing meaning it's basically worthless as-is.
