Works great once you figure out the way to properly activate it
Bought this product to keep track of my BAC levels when drinking and also to see how accurate it was out of curiosity. It's very easy to put together and comes with a nice assortment of tips to use to gauge your BAC levels. As one other customer review excellently pointed out the manual that comes with it describes some things well such as what the BAC level means and overviews what the outside buttons do. However, it does poorly mention how you have to blow into the device for more than 11 seconds and wait for it to click in order for it to display your results. If you stop too soon, then you won't get a reading at all and it makes you seem like it's defective but it's not. You just need to blow into it longer than 11 seconds and wait for the feeling it gives you in your hand. It will feel like the device has just clicked or activated then you'll get your test results. I've tried it quite a few times and the readouts are pretty accurate based on how intoxicated I was. I do recommend this product it's a solid purchase and works well, but I just wish the manufacturer did a better job of explaining its operation.

Was nice until it wasn't
This is our second BacTrack. Had an older smaller model and wanted a more professional version so we bought this one. Used it a bunch one day to experiment with what one drink does and second drink and so forth and difference between me and my wife and then it stopped working. Two days later it worked again but now I feel the reading is inaccurate. After one beer, 30 minutes later it says 0.00. I have reached out and am now sending the product in for diagnosis. At this price, I feel the product should just work.

Peace of mind...check
Just blow very normal, not hard, for 5 full seconds. Easy. Big gusts of exhaled wind is not how you do it, rather nice and easy.

It works once you learn the right procedure...
When I received the BACtrack Elements s78 unit I followed the instructions carefully but it would always give the error "Flo" like many others have mentioned here. I went to return it but alas Amazon does NOT accept returns on breathalyzers (I assume for health reasons?). So I called BACtrack and they guided me through the procedure over the phone, and now it works! The written instructions are not clear on this, but to make it work do this: 1) Push the button until you hear an initial beep, then let up on it. The unit will start to count down from 11 (why 11? Are the Engineers at BACtrack Spinal Tap Fans?). 2) When the countdown reaches 2, take a deep breath 3) Wait for two quick beeps after the countdown reaches zero then steadily blow into the unit. 5) You will hear a single beep once the unit detects your breath - DONT STOP! This beep lets you know the unit is working, not that it is done (like I mistakenly thought). Keep blowing while it beeps! 6) After w moment you will hear and feel a clicking noise, then another two beeps, at this point you can stop. 7) After a few seconds your BAC will be displayed on the unit. When I followed this procedure it works great. It's simple to use (once you follow my instructions and not theirs) and so far seems reliable. It's nice to have this on hand to check when I am out for dinner or dancing with my wife when having friends over and they drink, etc. Better to know and wait it out or catch a cab, then to get a DUI (or worse). I can't vouch for its accuracy, but I will do a follow-up review once I've used it for a while to report on its repeatability. I give it 4 stars because of the incomplete instructions, otherwise, I'd give it 5 stars (as of now).

Only lasts 75-users before loses sensitivity and decalibrates itself
Basically it works well and is accurate after waiting the required 15-minute period without drinking any alcohol. That is until about ~75-uses with previously consistent readings of only 0.03 to 0.04 BAC after always the same amount of beers drank when testing then it loses sensitivity and starts under-reporting values of 0.02, 0.01, until around 95-uses it starts showing 0.00 BAC after drinking the same amount of beer over the same time period. So the device becomes useless after a few months of consistent usage to check BAC. The company requires a $19.95 recalibration fee and cost of shipment to them for ~$28 total price when shipping USPS to get the devices re-calibrated so basically 25% of the original purchase price and it will only be good for another ~75-uses before it needs recalibration. That is a very expensive price to pay for re-calibration of the device. It should be $10 or $15 max, $20 is a little too high. Be aware of the re-calibration requirements and costs and the under-reporting of BAC after less than 100 uses or if the device hasn't been used for 6-12-months. I had the very first device replaced as defective thinking that the 75-use under-reporting problem was a defect only to get a brand new plastic-sealed device and using that one for the same number of uses and time period and have the same problem re-appear. It's a limitation of these devices. Updated 2016-08-06: About to send it to be re-calibrated again and now the price is $24.95 not including my shipping costs or just give up on it since the sensor might be completely dried out. After owning this product for 5-years and using it on-and-off in a year here and not there, now I realize that I should have bought the BACtrack S80 model instead which has a larger sensor so it is less prone to losing accuracy and sensitivity and and the larger sensor does not need to be re-calibrated as often. Back when I bought this unit 2011-05-22 it was $137.11 and now in 2016-08-06 it's $84.99 plus all the re-calibration costs. I just wonder if the $129.99 for the S80 product is worth it and will it have the same problem with the sensor needing to be re-calibrated after very few readings. Up Note: At least one good thing that came out of owning this product while I was using it and testing myself extensively is that I have a general idea as to how I feel and what my BAC is compared to the amount of alcoholic beverages I consume and my diet and metabolism rate. I now have a general idea what to expect and can guesstimate my BAC, sometimes but not always. Blood tests would probably be most accurate through, since the breath analysis is so error prone due to what I've seen after using this device new or even fresh after re-calibration.

Seems to be accurate
I tested this gadget today, waited 20m after last drink and smoke (and food) gave a reading I would expect for consumption of a bottle of 11% wine - 0.10. Will test again later, but seems to work fine, despite negative reviews- maybe they were not using the product correctly? That said, if my reading was over 0.03 I would not drive, I would allow a margin of error to be on the safe side. Will test myself again in the morning to see what the reader says.

Unreliable Results?
I bought the BACtrack Element because of its professional Fuel Cell technology and as a replacement to an earlier semi-conductor model which needed re-calibrating. The unit was delivered quickly and I was at first impressed by the quality and finish however when the opportunity to test the unit came I was sceptical of the results. Having previously used a breathalyzer and comparing to 'rule of thumb' guidelines the unit appeared to read cosistently low. The unit reads BAC% - the current UK limit being 0.08% equivalent to roughly 5 units of alcohol. Tests should be taken a minimum of 20 minutes after drinking without any food or smoking. These are some of the results obtained by myself over two weeks: 2 pints of beer (4 units) test after 20-30 mins. 0.00% (zero reading?). Large brandy (2 units) test after 20-30 mins. 0.00% (zero reading?). 3 large glasses of wine (9 units) test after 20-30 mins. 0.04% (only half of the UK limit but the amount consumed should have put me OVER the limit). Various drinks at a party approx. 13-14 units tested 30 mins after last drink and feeling intoxicated 0.06% and a zero reading at 8.00am the following morning when a residual reading of 0.02% might be expected. Anybody taking these readings on face value could be misled into thinking they were fit to drive with potentially dangerous consequences. I expected better accuracy in a breathalyzer costing over £80. I will be returning it for a refund and am still looking for a reliable replacement.

Very satisfied with this breathalyzer
I just recieved it, and tested it with beer. I can assure this unit is really accurate, the results fits according to the number of beer I took. It give a good 0.000% for a non-drinker, even if I just tested sombody that is drunk right before. Cons: - Need calibration each

Works Great
This is worth the money! It is light, easy to use and I think it is accurate! My buddies and I use it before getting into the car, and on those lazy patio days drinking. . . who can get the high score! It comes with 5 mouth pieces and if I recall it comes with batteries... the case and strap it comes with are rather handy too! I would recommend that if you want an accurate reading, read the instructions!!! Would defiantly recommend this product, for the fun and the serious types!
