Too short
Bought to retread spark plug hole but the powerbuilt spark plug back tap is too short. It should be offered in a 12” option in order to reach beyond the spark plug hole in order to be able to pull the cap and expanding the bottom tread. With what is offered, the entire back tap is inside the spark plug chamber thus making it impossible to pull the cap and twist it

Saved my mower from expensive repair
I had rushed and cross threaded my spark plug when fixing my lawn mower and was expecting an expensive repair bill from a shop to correct. Searching online I found the back tap and ordered with the hope of effecting repairs. The tool is similar in principal to an expansion anchor and as the internal shaft is tightened the tapping legs expand to the designed diameter. I watched a couple of YouTube videos prior to using the tool but was pleasantly surprised by the ease and effectiveness of use, as in a couple of minutes I had my mower repaired and running again. The tool is of good quality and while I had seen other reviews wishing it was longer to access deep set plugs, I didn’t have any issues for my application.

Be aware of the depth of hole of the spark plug chamber.
Will work for most applications and to be clear won't work for all of them!! I would send it back, but I love any and all tools for my collection that I will leave to my daughter and grandchildren when I pass away.

This is an awesome tool glad I found this
I'm doing this comment today to help others after reading all the bad comments. I bought a 2007 Ford Ranger with 200k miles on it. Back some 100k miles ago someone replace the spack plugs did ok with the first 3 plugs but the 4th was badly crossed into the head. See first pix the rusted plug is #4 . What a mess it was leaning to one side so the wire wouldn't plug all the way into the valve cover. The engine is a 2.3l DOHC inline 4 cylinder engine. First off is you have to bring the piston up to top dead cylinder just #4. See 2nd pix. I didn't have much room to work with. I used infor from a Mark C. and cut a slot in the top of the shaft just enough to catch with a pocket screw driver. I counted the turns 5 1/2 complete turns from bottom to all tight. I lubed the threads with synthetic grease. Inserted to tool all the way and tighten the nut 1 1/2 turns extracted it slowly back and forth 1/8 movement until it came all the way out of the cylinder turning counter clockwise. Clean lube and loosen tool reinsert into the s-p hole with more grease. Tigthen 3 complete turns and slowly extracted. Repeat third time at 5 1/2 turns counterclockwise till it came out of the hole. Then I chase with my second s-p chaser by hand to check ease of turning. Installed #4 spark plug. See third pix tools still like new. Repeat 1, 2 and 3 with my second chaser by hand now all 4 spark plugs goes in correctly. Done. The tool was not easy to use. The shaft Is to short even tighten all the way doesn't come thru the nuts. The shaft needs to be longer maybe 1/4 inch. Then the tool should be offered in two sizes an inch shorter for those tight places and maybe 2 inch longer for those 4 valve cylinder you know the dual cam heads. If it was longer then maybe I wouldn't have to remove the valve cover, intake and all that I had to remove to use this tool. Then I can't use a socket on because it wouldn't go over the nut. Had to use an open end wrench at an angle to turn the tool. jesss On cast iron heads this tool may not work well. Recommend 1/2 turn of the nuts of the shaft at a time with 7-8 pass thru. The key is working slowly. Anyway what worked for me may not work for you. I'm so glad I found this tool. It saved me from pulling the head and I feel that on the next tune up everything will be just fine. I was scared to use this tool because of all the negative comments. Now that I'm done I'm glad that I gave it a try. So worth the money I suspect those others should not be working on engines. Can't be forced have to work it slowly.

Perfect results
One of the best purchases I've made on Amazon. Thought I had really destroyed my lawn tractor engine trying to replace spark plug. This tool was super easy to use and repaired the threads in minutes. Can't say enough about this tool.

Brilliant tool
This is a wonderful tool. Props to the inventor! I used it for my Honda Fit, cyl#3, which has import-vehicle extra-deep spark plug wells. By itself, this tool would have been too short to use. But I came up with a cheap modification that works excellent! Exact tool purchased: 14MM Back Tap DRIVER SIZE: The drive nut on the tool, that you turn to operate the tool, is 13MM's. (Thanks to Milburn Stone for providing that info in Question I asked in the Q&A section) I know other people also came up with solutions for this tool being too short for their applications, but nobody clearly lists their solution. So here's mine, in case it helps! Too short?: I bought a "spark plug wrench spanner socket", and using those key words in a search will get you to the right type of tools to start. That type of wrench has a hollow core, perfect for sticking a screwdriver through to operate this Back Tap (be sure the wrench/socket you buy is hollow all the way through, but most are). I simply duct taped the hollow socket onto the Back Tap, and used the now-extended Back Tap flawlessly. Note: I had already ordered a 14MM wrench before I got the info on the Back Tap needing a 13MM, based off a question answer I found here, but it must have been for a different sized Back Tap or something. I took the 14MM wrench, cut a notch in each of the 6 wall points, and then shaped it so the socket size shrunk to a 13MM. It turned out alright honestly, anyway, and manually shaping a socket like that allowed me to create a tighter hold for the socket, and I didn't have to use duct tape. But I would for a factory 13MM. Best of luck to you, if you need it!

Works well
I used this product on #7 cylinder on a Hemi 5.7, I was surprised at how easy it did it’s job. The slots collected the garbage and the threads refreshed the spark plug threads.

Works very well. Tools is machined and well made for the intended application
This is a great way to repair spark plug threads without removing the head. Application of grease to the threads captures cuttings as you back the tool out of the threaded hole which minimizes the risk of cuttings falling into the engine. Repair threads using 2 or 3 successively deeper cuts (tightness on the tool) to minimize cuttings in each pass and to prevent binding of the tool. As with any tap, if there is excessive resistance, back the tool off a quarter turn or so to clean the cutting surface and continue. Only caveat is don't get grease on the head of the wedge or it will just spin in the tool body and wont be able to spread the tapered section of the tap open.

USEFUL TOOL
Worked well for a cross threaded spark plug on my '65 Jaguar e-type.

Invaluable tool!
This tool allowed me to repair the crossed threads at the top of a V-twin spark plug hole without dropping debris into the cylinder. It takes a little practice to use effectively, but it's intuitive to use. The only way to do a better job is to pull the head. Highly recommended.

A real time and money saver. Be precise with it.
A great tool but you need to understand what you are trying to do first. The idea is to use the good parts of the thread in the spark plug hole as a guide for the tool to remove or re-position damaged treads as you back the tool out. I used pliers rather than fingers to tighten the tool snugly into the hole. I also used a 1/2 inch deep socket on a six-inch extension to make sure it stayed straight. Be sure to coat the tool with grease as it not only lubricates the tool but traps the metal filings to the tool instead of them falling into the combustion chamber. Be really careful as every time you strain the treads, the closer you are to ruining them. I will use this tool anytime the spark plug isn't going smoothly into position.

Easy way to salvage a partially damaged thread.
The threads galled when removing a long reach spark plug on my motorcycle. Top part of the threads would not allow the plug to go back in straight. Could try to chase the threads with a tap but no guarantee I could get it in straight either. This tool cleaned up the mess in 20 min. stress free. Use it if you have a good portion of the thread in good shape. Keep in mind it cannot add metal so if most of the thread is stripped then an insert is the only solution. I tip my hat to the chap that invented this tool.
