A good rotary buffer...
About me/Credibility: I am a self employed automotive detailer. I have had extensive experience within auto body/paint work including panel replacement, welding patch panels, filling "bondo'ing" sanding and prepping paint/bare metal, priming and painting, blocking, color sanding and finally buffing with both rotary and dual action polishers. The polisher: People are complaining that this polisher is heavy. They are not lying, but it is supposed to be. I have found this polisher to do an excellent job from start to finish and it is built very well. I have even used it with a hook and loop backing plate (which I highly recommend) for sanding down to bare metal (takes it down very fast). There is no lack of power with this unit. I have dropped it many times. Still works like new with the exception that the side handle broke off. On a scale of 1-5 I rate the overall quality of this buffer 4 stars, especially considering you are only spending about 1/2 the price of the more popular brands. About rotary buffers: THIS IS NOT A TOY!!! A rotary buffer is primarily used on a low speed setting simply by letting the weight of the buffer and the polish do the work. You should not be trying to dig a hole in the paint with this or any buffer, which you can and probably will if you are getting too aggressive and do not arm yourself with enough education prior to tackling your project. A rotary buffer should only be used by someone that either has hands on experience with one, or at least extensive knowledge prior to using one. This isn't something that should be used without care and absolutely no knowledge prior to working on your project. If it sounds like I am being harsh on the novices, it's because I am. But, it's only for your own good. I don't want anyone going out with the thought on their brand new car to take out a swirl or two to only wind up needing a paint job because you cranked this or any buffer up to maximum speed and chose a poor polishing compound selection. If you're nervous, STOP. Consider buying yourself the Meguiars Dual Action buffer instead. It does nearly as much as a rotary can achieve without running nearly as much risk of burning through paint, especially around edges. Honestly, like I said this is a great buffer and SOMETIMES only a rotary can stand up to the task at hand but I use a Dual Action buffer on average about 19 out of 20 times on standard detail jobs. Tips: -Surface must be clean. If there is any gritty debris on your car when you polish it it will only make matters much worse. -There are many pads/polishes and combination of products that may need to be used to complete a satisfactory job. -There are different sized pads and style of backing plates available and each have their advantages and drawbacks. -Consider interchanging between rotary and dual action buffers to complete your job. You may start with a rotary but might obtain a better final result if you finish it off with a dual action buffer. - Stay away from plastic with this buffer. Plastic does not disperse heat nearly as well as metal and you can very easily burn the paint clear off of the plastic if used incorrectly. Recommended products: -Hook and loop backing plates in various sizes - Red, Yellow and black Meguiars foam polishing pads for various degrees of severity of finish - Meguiars M105 and M205 polish and compound polish (they are paint shop safe for fresh paint applications) - Meguiars Ultimate Compound. It is a great one step system, it doesn't NEED to be followed up with a finer polish but can be if desired and it is slightly more aggressive than M205 finishing polish. Recommended training resource if you have absolutely no knowledge about using a rotary buffer and their corresponding products: Paintucation by Kevin Tetz, color sanding and buffing edition. He covers almost everything you need to know and the price of the DVD is more than worth having to pay the price to repaint your mistake. Detailing Tips: Wash and dry your vehicle top down. For heavily contaminated vehicles such as vehicles with paint contamination I highly urge you purchase a clay bar kit and use it prior to polishing your vehicle to ensure proper prep work is performed. Polish vehicle. Keep your pad "moist" prep it prior to use by spraying at least a misting of water over the pad to prevent dry polishing and marring. Stop buffing when your polish turns to a haze. Keep the cord from rubbing your vehicle by throwing it over your shoulder. SEAL YOUR PAINT. Polish removes any existing wax on your vehicle. IT SHOULD BE FOLLOWED UP WITH A FRESH COAT OF WAX. That is unless of course your vehicle is freshly painted and it's within 90 days. Hope this review helps, remember, this isn't a toy, so it IS going to be heavy, as it should be.

Good Rotary Polisher
I initially bought the Porter Cable, but sent it back as it makes an awful lot of noise. I reluctantly bought the ATD next based on good reviews and what looked to be a good design in the pictures. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the ATD is only a rotary and not dual-action (orbital). This probably explains the price difference from the PC as the quality here seems to be at least as good. There are a few other things you should know that are not explained elsewhere -- like what comes in the box? Well there is a little assembly required actually, as the handles have to be attached. And then there are 2 disc plates. One is a 7 inch Velcro pad which simply screws on. It accepts the 8 inch Meguiar's pads, but not the new 2.0 pads which need a 6 inch plate like the PC. The 2nd plate comes with a wool bonnet attached as pictured. It's a little trickier to install, but not too bad with the supplied wrench. And that's about it! Well there are 2 replacement brushes for the motor (which I'm sure to lose before I need them). But there is no carrying case, no instructions (other than a safety booklet), no nothing. And that's probably OK. The price is nice and the tool has worked well the first few times I've used it. I would recommend one other consideration though. You are going to need to buy pads for this thing. The wool bonnet can only do so much. I would take a look at theMeguiars Dual Action Complete Kit which includes a dual action polisher and a few pads to get you started. Sadly I didn't see it online until after I had used the ATD a few times, but next time...

excellent tool at a reasonable price
First and foremost, I'd like to assure people that although some assembly is required, it is absolutely minimal. The fact that some people on here gave this machine a poor rating because they couldn't figure out how to put it together just flat out blows my mind. Let's just say that if you can't figure out how to attach the handle with the supplied allen wrench and 2 bolts-you have zero business operating this equipment. If you've ever used an angle grinder before, this is the same thing on a larger scale. Just wanted to assure everyone that there's no major assembly with this...you shouldn't need instructions to put this together even if it came with them. The only questionable parts bag for some people would be the one with the replacement brushes, which don't need installed unless the original ones burn out in the future-and unless you make a living with this buffer, you shouldn't ever even need them. If you're not a "garage guy" and can't change your own oil in your vehicle or use power tools, this is not something to purchase for you. Now to the quality...very impressive. Solid, heavy duty, and much better than expected for the price. The motor is really only loud past the number 3 setting, which I would never use on a paint finish since past 3 is above 2000RPMS and can burn your paint if you're not careful. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the buffer is infinitely variable speed between 1000 and 3000 RPM. It has the same variable round speed switch above the trigger like the more expensive counterparts do. The "soft start" is also an excellent feature that this machine comes with-much better than getting instantly sprayed with flying compound or glaze. It does have a basic common sense manual in the box, but no speed chart that corresponds to the numbers on the switch. There is another review on here that posts those for you, or you can call their customer service if you need them. Also, DO NOT be fooled by amazon's suggestive selling of the 6.5" meguires pads on here because they will not work with the supplied backing pad. The supplied hook and loop plate measures 7 and 1/8 inches in diameter so you won't want anything smaller than 8" pads for that. If you want to use smaller pads like I do, then you will have to order the 5" meguires backing plate for the 6.5" pads separately. Like others have said, it also comes with a standard 7" backing plate for wool bonnets, etc. and one wool bonnet for it too. The spindle shaft is the normal 5/8" 11 thread, so virtually all other companies backing plates are interchangeable with the tool. Well that being said, the bottom line is that I definitely recommend this buffer to anybody that wants body shop quality at a fraction of the price. For $75 you absolutely cannot beat this value. The only way (in my opinion) that you're going to get a tool of this quality, is if you're willing to shell out another $100 or more for a makita or another name brand. For me, this is a no brainer...great buffer, standard backing plate, hook and loop backing plate, wool bonnet all delivered to my door for under $75. Thanks ATD! *UPDATE* Over a year later and half a dozen 2-5 hour sessions compounding/glazing/waxing. Not ever one single issue with the tool. Still performs and sounds like new. Vehicles look better than factory fresh paint! Can't complain about that!
