Good product but poor packing for shipping

Product is good, as expected, but should have been protected better during shipment because the corners got a bit of damage. Bubble wrap or a padded envelope should have been used.

Not quite what I expected

I purchased this to practice my water color painting on. I got the impression that it would rinse off easily to be used again, it was suggested in an art book that I was reading. It will rinse, but you have to rub at it quite a bit. I may have left the paint on too long though. Other than that, I think it is nice to paint on.

Ultra-smooth and absorbent clay surface accepts most art media and allows manipulation of clay by scratching into it

These Claybords by Ampersand are ultra-smooth and wonderful to use for just about any medium. Even oil painting, which they aren't actually designed for, offers a different and interesting result because of the much higher absorbency of these panels. For some oil painting works, that high absorbency isn't beneficial because you'll end up with a duller oil finish rather than the high luminosity of oil paints on a more traditionally prepared surface. Mixed-media projects are perfect for these panels. You can use inks, graphite, and paints -- and then scratch down through them with various tools to create different looks. You can even "erase" mistakes (or changes of heart). They're also easy to adhere stuff to which makes them ideal for mixed media displays. The Claybord panels are coated with finely textured and very smooth white clay. The manufacturer lists the thickness of the clay as "7 to 10 dry-mils." I had no idea what that was to I googled a conversion chart and determined that they're somewhere between 0.178mm and 0.254mm (about 0.010 inches). You can use any variety of tools to apply medium and also to scratch down through the clay surface. Some options: hobby knives, razor blades, etching tools, sand paper, oil-free steel wool, erasers, and Ampersand Scratchbord tools. Claybord's clay coating allows for the use of sgraffito techniques to cut into the surface and re-expose the white clay ground. This particular Claybord size is 16" x 20" and it's only 1/8" thick. However, Ampersand offers Claybord in many sizes as well as cradled options in three different thicknesses (0.75," 1.5," and 2").

Best artist panels

This is the only brand I buy anymore. I’ve been painting for 50 years and have tried many different surfaces. I won’t ever buy another brand. These are by far the best!!

Good product, poorly shipped

I have used ampersand clayboards for my art for years and the product and company are excellent. Unfortunately the corners are easily chipped if banged, and Amazon shipped them in a thin envelope. Both boards I ordered, because I needed them ASAP, had corners chipped from improper protection for shipping. Best to order from actual art stores if you want them to arrive without damage.

Good Substrate

I found it a challenge to paint on with acrylics as it is so smooth. I do like my end results as seen in photo. DROID TALK.

Very white matte surface

Excelent option for projecting an image (through a lens) in a 'DIY dark camera'. Very matter surface and reflective as well. Very sturdy base. Very pricey but a unique product.

Ampersand is the best.

Ampersand makes the best panels, hands down, of any that I've tried, and I'm a professional artist. The sizing is always correct, unlike some I could name. The quality is fantastic, they have amazing customer service, and go above and beyond in everything they do.

Arrived damaged

Arrived quickly and in a thin bubble envelope but it was damaged. For the price, which I do not think was cheap, this was not good. I can not now use it for an art project and will look elsewhere. Very disappointing.
