GE vs Amazon Premium filter.

Filters are one of those products that you have to accept manufacturer published specs for. There's no practical way to test these without the resources of a lab. It's all about trust. GE is a major player, has a ~130 year history and like many large and established US companies is highly process driven, innovative and fully embraces quality control and data driven results. The published specs for their MWF filter are below. One caveat: The GE Appliances sub-brand is now owned or controlled by Chinese company Haier and KKR, an American global investment firm. Unknown how much of the typically high performing and capable GE culture and run rules will remain intact over the long run. The Amazon filter uses coconut shell carbon for the filter media. The GE uses a different type of carbon. There's a lot of info out there about how these compare. When looking into this, beware info from companies that sell filtration products. Best to stick with third party sources that don't have profit motives. As far as I can tell, each has it's strengths and weaknesses. I suspect that coconut shell carbon is a less expensive alternative to what GE uses but this doesn't necessarily mean it's less effective. Again, the safety and efficacy of these filters boils down to trust. I have no reason to believe that the Amazon Premium MWF filter is more or less effective than GE's but cost no object, I'd go with the GE. I like that the GE pharmaceutical filtration is third party tested. If I lived in an area where water management is suspect or in a heavily populated area with tsunamis of who knows what being flushed or otherwise sent down the drain to a water management plant, I'd go with the GE. The level of filtration you need goes hand in hand with how well your local municipality does with water management. The city I live in is diligent about water quality and publishes an annual and detailed report of the testing. They test for thousands of contaminants. In other words, the water in my area is most likely safe for consumption. Not true in all areas. If your water is managed by a transparent and professional municipality, is well funded and staffed, going with a 'lesser' filter than the GE is probably OK. Filter performance in my case is mostly about filtering out hard water taste. Side note about the water pressure spec for the GE filter: GE's spec is 40 psi min, 120 psi max. If you have less than 40 psi in the water line feeding the filter, no worries according to GE customer service. The only downside is that ice production may be slower at pressures lower than 40 psi. No issues with water filtration performance. Note that I reached out by email to their customer service and got a quick response from an actual engineer who provided a clear and concise explanation. Rare. The Amazon Premium filter's pressure spec is 20-100 psi. This implies that the housing isn't as strong as the GE's. Very difficult to know if this means that the Amazon Premium filter poses any significant burst or leakage threat relative to the GE filter. For most I'd guess not. Perhaps if you've turned off your water at the main in preparation for travel or for doing plumbing work, be careful when turning it back on. Turn on the valve *very* slowly and open at least one faucet in the house before doing so. This may prevent an initial spike of pressure which could be damaging. So, should you buy the Amazon filter? I'd say yes if you trust those that manage your water quality. The Amazon Premium filter seems to filter hard water taste as well as the GE. Both this and the GE are rated for 6 months/300 gallons usage. lt fits well and doesn't leak. Cautiously recommended.. The Amazon filter specs are above in the advertising. They are less comprehensive than GE's published specs. Maybe Amazon has more detailed info available but I wasn't able to find it. Perhaps reaching out to Amazon customer service would lead to more info. Just as good as the name brand

I've used the more expensive name brand and this works just as well. I can tell no difference in the taste of my water. Why wouldn't I spend less money for the same thing?

Perfect replacement filter at less than half the cost. Just remember to purge the line for at least 30 seconds after install.

Good but probably doesn't filter as well as genuine GE

Filter works and fit like the original. I do notice water flows quicker so there is probably less filtering than GE filter. Since I'm running water through two whole house filters this is a good replacement water filter for my needs.

Taste takes getting used to

Excellent price and value for the money. I didnt like the taste at first but my 11 yr old daughter didn't mention any dislike. It took me a while to drink it, even though I drained 2 to 3 two liter jugs after installation. I normally drink bottled water, but have now started drinking off and on from this filter and it tastes ok. I suggest you only by one if this is your first time trying this filter, then if you like it you can buy 3 and get the cost savings.

Flavorless water, cost effective

We bought a house with a GE fridge. The water that came out tasted awful. Given the appalling amount of maintenance the previous owners didn’t do, the filter may have been 5 years old. I ordered these Amazon ones. Installation is simple. After purging air and running a lot of water through it, there is no flavor of any kind. 100% satisfied due to the lack of flavor and the fact you get two of these for less than one GE brand filter.

Excellent and cost efficient replacement.

The filter looked almost exactly as the one that was installed by General Electric when I bought the refrigerator. It only lacked an indicator arrow on the body of the filter for installation. I managed easily to install the filter anyways. Manufacturing quality seemed excellent.

Funciona perfecto y con gran flujo.

Compatibilidad perfecta con mi refri GE profile. El filtro viejo al parecer ya estaba muy tapado porque tardaba siglos al salir el agua, llenar una jarra de un litro requería de estar en el despachador unos 4-5 minutos. Cambié de filtro y este lo hace en una quinta parte del tiempo como cuando el refrigerador era nuevo. El agua sale súper cristalina con nada de impurezas ni malos olores o sabores. Lo recomiendo bastante y por el precio tan bajo, ya no hay excusa para no cambiarlo cada 6 meses como recomienda el fabricante.

Muy recomendable

Excelente para filtrar el agua, ya no utilizo garrafones ni filtros además de este. Conviene porque sale el agua fría al ser del refrigerador y no tiene sabor ni olor. Además que su precio es mucho mejor que el Original de GE
