Beginner, Impressed!
So I have had a few lock-back pocket knives kicking around my life for a few years now. One Gerber has been with my for over a decade. Over the last few months, I have realized how I have completely neglected blade care all this time. I use them purely for home use, work use, and have yet had a chance to use them as an "outdoorsman" would... someday! Some of my knives have gotten nastily damaged and dulled over the years.... some just dulled. I have a "pro" motorized, ceramic kitchen knife sharpener, and out of of desperation I TRIED using it on my oldest Gerber. Nope, can't barely fit the thick blade in the slots, and even so, the original bevel must be at too large of an angle. It looks like it tried to grind down a secondary bevel. I know that it cuts at 20 degrees. After research, watching sharpening methods using everything from sandpaper, to whetstones, to splash & go stones, to diamond bench sharpeners, I settled on this one for all my general sharpening. After trying to emulate the methods I had watched, I cannot believe it, but I already have had HUGE results! My oldest most damaged Gerber, pitted, dulled, etc.... After doing the work 10x slower than anyone else, I managed to restore the edge, get ride of the pitting AND properly sharpen the blade all on this stone... Didn't even use a coarser stone before hand to "repair the edge"... I got it to the point that it cuts through paper smoothly, through the full blade with no jagged tears... I do not have a proper way to strop the bevel off yet, so I did some horizontal blade sharpening pulls, alternating until the bevel pretty much was gone, and I used my work mat in place of a leather strop in the meantime until I can get one... It can't arm hair shave very well just yet, but I am sure until I can get more of the proper gear to remove the bevel and I work on my technique, I am convinced I will be able to get to that point. I watched a video of a guy sharpening a blade on this stone, and had such good technique, was able to shave his arm hairs straight away. I will get there! Meantime, fantastic bench stone! DO NOT BUY CHEAP DIAMOND STONES! Those are not made properly where the diamond is not ionized into the metal, and are just stuck on with adhesive, meaning it will wear down and rub off completely over time. This stone will last for years in comparison!

Great product!
Pros - product exactly as described. It’s meeting perceived expectations. No complaints. Plus chicks dig sharp knives, and I can deliver with this, which equals happy chicks. Cons - none

I’m 74 and my handshake
I’m 74 and my handshake I bought the fine, there’s no need for a course stone. I used a marker And the jewelers loupe to get the angle, once I got that I just did it by sight and got a burr in about a minute. You do need something else to get the burr off, I ordered a 6 micron stropping Compound, then 3 micron and finally 1 micron. That should do it. Update, I ended up buying an extra fine as well and going to a three pack of diamond sharpening paste 6 microns, three and then one. This worked especially well.

Cuts great but not too fast
Just got this stone today. My ultratech was getting pretty dull so I decided to give this a shot after watching videos that recommended this exact stone. I was afraid when I saw the bad reviews about it not being fully coated or flat. Mine is only missing the diamond coating on maybe a 1/2mm square on the very very corner so I feel like that is more than acceptable. And from what I can tell it’s perfectly flat. It cuts into the steel very well and it doesn’t cut so fast that you would be afraid to remove too much material so I really like that. It sharpened m390 just fine and after stropping the blade it whittles hairs. As does my 154cm Emerson that I just sharpened on it. And let me say I’ve abused that knife every way possible and there were decent chips in the blade that I was able to work out. I’d recommend this stone with a two sided strop and 3.5-1.0-0.5 micron diamond stropping compound. I’ve been able to get knives to shave with simple cheap stones but those edges don’t feel nearly as sharp as this Diesharp stone makes them. Overall I’d buy again. And it’s very heavy so it doesn’t slide around even with decent or light pressure applied. I’m sure this will last me a good while and I like that it’s low maintenance because gosh do I hate oil stones.

Manufacturing defects
Edit 3: Before returning my second defective stone I called DMT customer service and they were great. I am now quite satisfied. It's an aggressive sharpening stone in a highly useful grit. I wish I hadn't had to go through the trouble it took to get a good one, but I'm glad I did. If you get a defective stone, which seems to happen with some regularity, don't return it to Amazon. Call DMT at the number on the box and if they are as good to you as they were to me, you'll be happy. original review and first two edits: This stone came with manufacturing defects - a mottled surface with actual thumbprints in it, and numerous scratches and other defects. These are so visible there's no excuse for this getting through QC. It would probably sharpen OK but the marred surface is plain ugly. See my product pictures. I want to support American manufacturing but this reminds me of the 1970's when you had to buy an import if you wanted a quality car. I tried scrubbing the thumbprints and other mottling off with soapy water and a brass brush, but it didn't work. Of course, scrubbing wouldn't fix the scratches and gouges anyway. I'm returning this one for exchange and will update my review when the new one comes in. Edit: the second stone came marred with a black hard residue that cleaned off leaving what seems to be a permanently discolored surface. Unlike the first stone the diamond surface seems to be OK, so I'm going to keep it, but I am disappointed at DMT's poor quality control. Edit 2: My blade drags on the discolored area and makes a noise as it runs over it. Not good, this one is going back too. DMT's packaging is also substandard. It comes in an over-large cardboard sleeve with the diamond surface partially exposed. At this price level a simple plastic storage box should be included, even if it adds a couple dollars to the price.

Exceptional
Just pretty much reprofiled an old kitchen knife with a 600 grit fine stone!! These stones are very very effective. Normally you'd need a 120 or 240. Ive been hand sharpening for a couple of years now with wetstones so am pretty experienced. This stone is exceptional and ideal for beginners. A 600 grit stone is normally a third stone before a 1000 and then 4000/6000 polish. However this 600 is way more effective than a 600 grit wetstone so the results are immediate and significant. All I can say is that they work a lot quicker than wetstones so take it easy with new or already sharp knives. Burr creation is profound so very easy to tell when youve apexed. Even old difficult to sharpen knives wont last two minutes with this thing, so glad I found it. I follow a guy on youtube who taught me how to sharpen, look him up. His youtube profile is OUTDOORS55. His name is Alex. He got me into DMT stones and gives great tutorials on every day sharpening using cost effective stones. No need for Japanese chosera stones at £200, get one of these american imports, sharpen from a fine stone and then strop to shaving sharpness!

NOT flat, fast and uneven wear.
Received the wrong size stone, but needed it that night so had to settle with what I was given. Product came with multiple small pits and lips on the edge. Gave it a go anyways and ALL the items I tried to flatten started off like the one pictured because of a previously unseen valley in the stone. It’s not the largest hollow I’ve seen, but for the price of the stone I expected better. Update: I am planning to re-order a stone that has the quality this one advertised. Until then, I was trying again to see if I was wrong. I had two very clear wear patters emerge (shown in another picture). Second day I tried to give it a shot, and it’s had 2 different uneven wear patters. Absolute trash. I’m disgusted, this became less reliable than the cheap starter set of whetstones, and at a WAY higher price. May as well save the money, buy a stone that is more affordable with the same quality. Likely go the route of Rob Cosman, little higher cost but a reputation that might still be worth something.

If you only want to buy one diamond plate and already have finer grit stones or want to buy quality polishing whetstones.
Excellent product. However, coating is missing near one edge and coating came of on few minuscule spots which is manufacturing issue. I think this plate and grit is very nice and ideal for doing fine honing but also takes material off fast enough that it can be use as shaping, just takes a bit longer which is good enough if you want to buy only one diamond plate that can shape as well as finish. If you want to buy only one diamond plate because you have finer and coarser wet stones (as I do) then I would recommend this grit. I thought hard about which stones/plate to buy so here's what I got for sharpening my chisels and smoothing fountain pens: rough grit cheap diamond plates from China on eBay for few bucks, then this 600 grit DMT D8ME plate, then a combination 1000/6000 grit stone (I recommend CERAX brand or King stone from eBbay. I think Cerax is better) then finally I bought a 12000 grit stone from eBay (I recommend CERAX, the other option is Sharpton). This way I have one quality diamond plate (diamond plates cut faster which is neither good nor bad) and then I have the finer whetstones for producing quality polished mirror finish.

Sturdy and cuts fast
This product looks and feels like it will last me a life time. It's super solid and heavy. I've sharpen 10 knives on it already and i am very impressed about how fast it cuts. It's a bit expensive compare to other systems but overall im happy with this purchase.
