Weird Harold Likes His Nuts
Since I now work from home due to the pandemic I needed some office mates. I hung my first squirrel feeder and what chaos and fun ensued. Here we are years later and my second wood feeder suffered the wrath of the weather. I decided to upgrade and found this one, metal and sturdy looking. I ordered it from Amazon at 2:00 pm and it was delivered the next morning at 6:30 AM, even my dog wasn't up that early. The feeder seems sturdy and well built, the hinge is larger than any other squirrel feeder hinge. I love that there are holes drilled in the bottom to allow moisture to drain preventing mold. I see that one reviewer has issues with the notches in the top corner, they are there to allow the Plexiglas window to be removed, cleaned or even replaced. I will watch to see if they become an issue. Here are my two tips. 1. Squirrels need water so why not supply that as well? I buy a separate bird cage water dish and drill a hole in the side of the feeder and offer my little office mates some water, it’s fun to watch them drink. Tip #2 I get raw unprocessed peanuts from my local Asian market, they run me about $1.29 Lb. at 2022 prices!!! Since this new feeder holds about twice the nuts as anything else having a line on a deal for nuts is a good thing. But what fun a squirrel feeder is. We've taken to naming the squirrels that come, my favorite is one that we call Weird Harold. He seems to be the loner squirrel, he's the only one who hasn't ever brought another squirrel to the feeder. Weird Harold likes to take peanuts and hide them in strange non squirrel places, lately he's taken to hiding the nuts in the twigs of a nearby bush, and now the bush is now full of peanuts like some strange squirrel Christmas tree. Since we have the feeder near the sidewalk we have it high enough that the dogs being walked by can't get to the squirrels but it drives the dogs bonkers. The squirrels tend to retaliate at the dogs (and people) by pulling bark off the tree and throwing it at dogs and people. These are the thug squirrels. Our own dog has learned to coexist with the squirrels however we tend to not say the word "squirrel" around her, instead we refer to them as snakes. If you've never had a squirrel feeder you are missing out on some of the best entertainment ever, squirrel fights are awesome and never result in any squirrels being harmed, but it's good high drama and even something worth placing a few family bets on who’s the winner.

Anyone know a good squirrel trainer?
The media could not be loaded. Pretty funny, after the eat about half the food they turn it into a fort.

Almost perfect. Better than a wood one for sure if you are not going to be around!
***Update**** - Photos Added 11/6/2019. You can see the corner where the gap is now and how I fixed this issue with strong duck tape. My babies no longer get stuck in the gaps. Easy fix, but it would be better if the company fixed this themselves. Otherwise, considering how much abuse the box has gone through since purchasing, it's holding up very well! Now that all the Springtime babies are old enough to feed on acorn and nuts (we got about 30 squirrels that come around at any given time!) we needed something that we could fill and leave out for them. Many of our squirrels have been coming around for years and now they are healthy and happy critters and super fun to watch! We had two cedar boxes initially but after a while, they made a mangled mess out of them with their teeth. Wood makes the perfect chew-toy for perpetually teething squirrels so we needed something much more durable. The metal box works very well, it took most of our squirrels less than a day to figure it out and use it regularly (They did, after all, have wood ones initially). Eventually, I will have to get another box as one just doesn't cut it when 8 squirrels (And two chipmunks) show up at the same time to the box. An inevitable squirrel tree & deck chase ensues when that happens. Most of them try to be patient when waiting for their turn to get a nut but a lot of the older ones make sure the juveniles know their place in the ranks of food gathering. Thankfully, they don't get into huge scuffles...yet. To prevent the issue of them chewing away at the clear acrylic plate I did the same thing another person did in another review with the exception that I used all-metal, unpainted binder clips. I used 5 one inch clips and they fit along the end of the plate perfectly. Not a single squirrel has been able to bite into them, move them or remove them and it keeps the plate in place too as they can't push it up. The only hang-up I have with this box is that there is a small gap in the seam where the acrylic plate slides in on both sides (I will post a photo when I can get a good shot so viewers know exactly what I am talking about.) I have had two squirrels now get their toenail stuck in this small gap when trying to exit the box and watched one struggle to get free all the while being bombarded with the anger of another squirrel that wanted to get in. We haven't seen any serious injury from this happening that we know of or get completely stuck that we have seen but, we do fear it might happen when we are not around. If the 1/8" gap wasn't there on both sides, the box would be perfect!

OK after making a few tweaks
Certainly should last longer than the wood one I had (although I had it many years). I would prefer the lid not be slanted as much or even straight across; squirrels like to sit on the lid of my old box. I agree with others on several points: the open area where the lid attaches could let in rain (I used heavy duct tape to cover openings); plastic front is inadequate if turning it over so peanuts do not fall out (I bent out the guides to allow it to fall all the way down); the lid slams really loud (added felt 'bumpers' under the lid). It gets EXTREMELY hot in our TX heat! I could not touch it after only 5 mins in the sun. I'm trying to come up with a way to cover/insulate the bottom so squirrels don't burn their little paws. Returned the one ordered through Amazon due to it being bent, dented & a hole punched along the side. Amazon would not post review saying it wasn't a review of the item but of the vendor. Maybe it was Amazon that damaged it while handling for shipment. I ordered another from another site.
