Unnecessary changes from original Backpack
As others have said, it "works" - it certainly does what it's supposed to. But two changes from the original backpack are head-scratchers. First, why the change from metal fasteners to plastic? I agree with other reviewers that this is a failure point waiting to happen. It also makes assembly and installation frustrating (snapping the plastic rings together, I felt like I was going to break them). Second, the original backpack was bare polished metal, which complemented Apple's industrial aesthetic. The new model is powder coated in white, so it's a bit of a sore thumb compared to the aluminum of the Apple Studio Display. I don't know why TwelveSouth did this, since this model is supposed o be ASD-specific. Again, it does what it's supposed to, and unlike other reviewers, I have no complaints about the price.

It works but, Plastic connection the clear failure point
Plastic. The heavy-weight BackPack metal shelf is slipped into the plastic "Saddle Clip" in what seems to me to be a very dubious connection to the Monitor Cable Hole. I wish the Twelve-South designers would investigate other materials for the "Saddle Clip." Perhaps a machined aluminum or composite material would give greater strength? I don't think I am alone in saying I would pay more for an all-metal construction. As it stands now, I know this plastic connection will eventually fail. There are no other purchase options for a small behind-the-monitor Mac shelf. I am happy that Twelve South is manufacturing the BackPack, and I am glad I purchased it. I use the BackPack to hold a few SSDs behind my Studio Monitor. It fills the need for a discreet clutter management shelf perfectly. Just be sure to stay WELL within the 2-pound weight limit for the BackPack shelf.

Good idea. Wish I would have thot about it.
Very good for holding external drives on the back of a Mac.

Works well - flexibility in mounting process.
Works as advertise. Forms a sturdy shelf for peripherals. I have two external SSD's sitting on it.

Surprisingly Good
At first, I was a little put off by the price, I thought it should be cheaper for a piece of metal - but I realized that wasn't fair. This product was so well designed that someone unfamiliar with an iMac would definitely think it is a native part included by apple. It is sturdy and of great build quality, fits into the stand cable opening like it came in the box with the computer and even has pads on its interior to dampen any vibration from a spinning hard drive from making any kind of rattling noise. The holes punched might function for heat dissipation but they serve to help you mount the device to your desire using the included wire ties that I wasn't even expecting. Such a thoughtful and well designed product earns its price and 5 stars from this customer.

Dryer Than Expected
I had been thinking about buying the Back Pack for some time but was getting along without it. I saw it on sale and picked it up. It shipped quickly and I installed it in less than five minutes. Made of light weight aluminum it is strong enough to hold heavier drives as long as it’s not above the limit of four pounds.

Clip on mechanism seems weak; generally overpriced
Great concept. I wish the clip on mechanism was more sturdy. It's overpriced for what you get.

Good product, works fine (for me), but a bit overpriced
This is an excellent product that works exactly as advertised for my purposes. The shelf itself has a weighty feel to it and seems durable and well made. It's beautifully designed and matches the iMac aesthetic perfectly. It includes easy to understand instructions that allow for a variety of configurations (high install, low install, front install, back install) on a number of iMac computers and Cinema displays. The shelf support clips work well enough, but if I was being picky (and I am, given the high price of this product), I'd wish that the screws held more tightly. Having said that, I haven't experienced any slippage during the two weeks I've owned the product and I have mine installed high on the backside of an iMac 27" (late '12 model). I'm using the shelf to support less than one pound of total weight, so I can't attest to the claim that it can support up to 3.5 lbs. (greater than the weight of an iMac Air) but I can tell you that when I apply some downward pressure on the shelf (to simulate more weight), it slips a little because the screws don't hold their position tightly enough within the rear support rail. Sure, it's an unscientific test, but I don't think I'd fully trust this to hold an iMac Air. Greater holding power would give me piece of mind and although I'm relatively certain my shelf won't slip, I'm still nervous enough to check it every few days. Other than that, the product came slightly over-packaged in my opinion. Although I do appreciate good packaging, I feel that much of it is unnecessary given the durability of the actual product. It arrived with an outer carton/sleeve that was glue-dotted around a clear PET/PVC box which was cradled inside of a fairly high quality textured carton lid. When you open all of this, you find the shelf, some instructions, and yet ANOTHER box with a flip-top lid that has thick foam padding glued to the top and bottom to house and protect the various clips and vertical support pegs. Some of this was appreciated (like the thin paper insert telling you which support clips you need for your particular install) but packaging should strike a balance between protecting the actual product and looking good or giving people that quality unboxing experience. This packaging does way too much to protect the actual product and goes overboard just to enhance the unboxing experience. I'd be okay with this if Twelve South was sucking up the cost, but at $35 for a tiny computer shelf, give me less packaging fluff in exchange for screws that hold more tightly in place. IN SUMMARY: This was really a 3.5 out of 5. I'm docking 1.5 stars for the high price and for the screws not holding as securely as I'd want, but it was an easy choice for me to round up since I haven't seen any slippage for my current (lightweight) load. Therefore, if you have a lightweight load to support and you're okay with spending a lot of money on a computer shelf, go for it, but if you're looking to support an iMac Air or heavier, I wouldn't be surprised if you see slippage with all that weight.

Not compatible with height-adjustable Studio Display
Ordered this, and as it's designed to only fit the tilt-adjustable Studio Display, not the height-adjustable one.

Pricey but good
For what it is the cost is a bit pricey, but the build quality is very good, it’s easy to install and once it’s installed you’d never know it was there. The inclusion of the strap to secure what’s on the shelf is also a nice addition.

A bit pricey for what it is.
Well made, versatile and does the job well, but a bit pricey for a piece of bent metal and a few bits of plastic. But, such is the world of Apple!
