Nice backpack, but large. Wasn't what I was looking for.
I'd like to start off by saying this backpack is very well thought out and while I do think it's high quality and very durable, it just isn't quite the backpack for me. The rugged material is great, the organization is excellent, but it ends up seeming huge even with only a few items in it. This isn't unique to this backpack, and is in fact a trend over the past few years that I'm trying to avoid and just can't seem to. I thought the compression straps would help this, but they didn't do much at all since the pockets aren't included in that and even a package of wet wipes seem to make the pockets bulge. I used this as my pack for under the seat on an airplane and to travel for two weeks around Japan. It technically fit under the seat, but it wasn't very flexible and stuck out a few inches even when mostly empty, eating up all of my leg room for a 13-hour flight. (I'm 5'6" and ANA has a little more leg room than other airlines, so I couldn't imagine this on a US domestic flight.) It would be better used as an overhead item if brought onboard, especially because if it's very full I don't know if it would be able to fit under a seat at all. I do feel like it can withstand pretty much anything, so it still looks brand new after being dragged all over different trains and planes. It was also comfortable to wear. The thick back padding that makes it inflexible DOES make it very comfortable, so I would consider that as a plus for most people. Many of the comments said the zippers were difficult. Mine were totally fine and took no breaking in to open easily. Perhaps they've updated the zippers on more recent backpacks, or only people who got unusually difficult zippers have noticed enough to comment. I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Pain to register and prefer older design
I'll share some product registration tips below, but first a few of my thoughts on the pack. I bought this to replace an older model that I purchased for $1.00 at a garage sale for business road trips. It quickly became my everyday carry and accompanied me on many trips across the U.S. and around the world. The Swerve is nearly identical to my old one. The only thing I miss is that my old one had an extra pocket inside the #2 (from the front) compartment. The organizer in the front compartment still serves the purpose, but is not quite as handy. Beyond that the Swerve is light, durable, has plenty of compartments for computer, books, keys, documents, media player, etc., etc., and is comfortable to haul around. The padded "Tech Spot" compartment is also nice to help absorb being tossed around during travel - though the bottom of the pack is not padded. (I added some packing foam to mine.) I found registering this pack a royal PITA! I even began to question if the pack was actually a High Sierra product. The instructions on the cardboard swing tags failed miserably. I ended up having to create an account at High Sierra and spent two days looking for the cloth tags inside the pack! With the pack front facing away from you, the tags will be I side the very back compartment, on the right side just below the end of the zipper. I had to move the Tech Spot padding out of the way to finally find them. Once I had do e all that product registration was pretty simple.

Durable, love the organization
This is by far my favorite backpack of any I have owned. I bought it December 2014 primarily to take a days worth of snacks for 3 kids to Disneyland. It had enough sections to keep snacks, water bottles, jackets, etc. organized. It has excelled in every setting since, and has become my preferred bag for any kind of travel. I can take everything I need for a few days to anywhere. The top handle is padded and sturdy, feels great in the hand when the bag is heavy. The zippers are among the best I have ever seen. It fits under an airline seat when full. The side mesh pockets are great for water bottles or umbrellas. It is well made and has held up perfectly over the years, today still looks almost like new. I plan to use it for many years into the future. If I could design a perfect backpack, I would start with this one and change only a few things. I don't care about USB charging ports, you can push your charging cable through the headphones port on the front pocket - keeping your battery charger in one of the smaller dividers. I do wish it had a luggage strap on the back, but there are other ways to strap a bag on top of a wheeled carryon. I personally don't travel with a laptop so I have no use for the lay-flat rear laptop zippered section that other backpacks have. I like the way this has a zipper above the padded computer sleeve in the back, for easy access to whatever you have in that section. A "hidden" pocket on the back would be nice, for passports or money. I have always been a little puzzled at the two zippers that access the same main rear pocket, it would make more sense if the laptop section was completely separate since it has its own zipper. Overall it's a well made, comfortable, versatile backpack. I expect it to perform well for many years to come.

Very strong and durable
Bought this for my High school son. Have it over 6 months. Everyday the bag is packed to capacity and there is no wear or tear or signs of stress on the bag. Extremely sturdy and well made. has many compartments and can fit a multitude of things.

Pros: Well made, good quality, lots of storage. Cons: Comically large on my child.
This is my daughter's 3rd backpack this year because the zippers and seams failed on the first two. I have no concerns that will happen with this backpack. It's really heavy duty, good quality, strong seams and nice zippers. There is SO MUCH storage in this bag! No way she'll need all of the compartments, but they might be useful for older kids or adults. Only downsides for us: too many zippers (10 zippers! Why so many?!) and it's comically large on her right now, but I trust this backpack will last at least a couple more school years, so she'll grow into it.

Best backpack ever
I bought this for my daughter for school over a year ago and it has held ya very well with all the stuff she has carried in it. I love that it has the device pocket that protects the devices well and plenty of storage for books and we can even fit in a spare pair of shoes in the winter. My son has the same style in a different colour and I can get his snow pants in his as well. We have used them on a couple trips and hiking and been able to fit a lot of stuff in them. They fit comfortably as well. If I had to change anything I might add a buckle instead of rings to the straps so there is they option to buckle around the waist. Otherwise, in that situation we tied it and the straps held very well. It is one of the best backpacks I have ever bought. I hope they are still around when these ones get retired so I can purchase again.

Sturdy, comfortable, highly functional
I carry a lot of stuff around with me every day, a lot of heavy stuff, and before I got this backpack I was going through a new backpack every few months. I've had this backpack now for two years and have really used and abused it during that time. It's held up better than I ever expected to: no rips, no holes, no bursting seams, no frayed straps or broken zippers. The only damage is that some of the bottom piping is just now starting to rub off where the bag has sat on the ground or floor. There are so many other things to love about the backpack (and High Sierra in general) beyond the quality of the construction: -- Pockets. So many pockets and pouches and sections that you'll be spoiled for choice and wonder how you got along without so many options. The padded laptop section in the main pocket fits -- and more importantly protects -- my laptop really well, though I use it mostly for holding larger books and folders of paper. (My only gripe about the many pockets is that the bag gets a little front heavy if you put as much into the front pockets as they will hold so you'll be forever pulling the bag upright again, but it's a small gripe.) -- The suspension system on the straps is fantastic. Most backpacks are fairly uncomfortable to carry after awhile if you carry a lot of stuff. The High Sierra suspension system has more give, making the weight easier to bear. (It also helps extend the life of the straps because there is less stress where the straps attach to the bag body when you pick up the bag.) The fact that both the inside of the straps and the back of the bag are padded make this probably the most comfortable backpack I've ever used. I honestly can't recommend this backpack enough.
