Great Bookshelf, kinda stinky!

This is a cute little bookshelf! It was bigger than we thought, probably due to just rough estimating the measurements next to the wall. However, we love it! I docked a star due to it having a SUPER strong chemical smell. As most have said. It started giving me a headache after a while. However, it looks awesome in my sons room and worked out super well! We put it together quickly and it looks great. As others have mentioned when getting our wood it looked black. Once we put it all together you can see it looks more dark brown then when I just had a few pieces in my hand next to the espresso crib. You can see my photos attached. All in all I would refer this to a friend, but I would say set it up somewhere you can air it out for a bit.

It gets the job done.

It’s nice, not the best quality furniture but hey, ya get what ya pay for. It’s not the worst. I’d say in a pinch, yeah go for it.

It's just ok

The paint/finish was flaking off before I assembled it. It's just ok for the price I didn't expect solid wood. The back is very flimsy. Know that you can't adjust the height of the shelves. The other review that said it smells is dead on. It's been out of the box & assembled for a few hours & you can still smell it from a room away. Update: We have had this for a month now. The smell that permeated the downstairs lasted a few days to a week. Now a month later you can still smell the bookcase when you are in close proximity. Honestly, if it was possible to dismantle this item, packaging it back up & return it without spending hours to do it we would returned it already.

Strong and long lasting odor

I like everything but the odor is obnoxious and long lasting. Since I put it together, it has been almost three months and the odor is still there though much lighter now. Will stay in the garage till the odor is gone.

The worst chemical smell possible

If you are sensitive do not buy this! Cannot get rid of the chemical smell from this dresser. Had it outside for two days to air it out and it still did not eliminate it completely.

Buy it for storage, not for looks

I purchased this piece to use for storage in my home office. I suppose for $69, you can't expect but so much... but I am still disappointed with the lack of quality. PROS: it is easy to assemble and all parts were included. The shelf is fairly sturdy and is the height of a typical desk, so it makes a nice complimentary piece in an office type setting. It feels fairly solid and gives the appearance of being solid wood. Packaging was appropriately protective and there were no dings or scratches on any of the pieces. CONS: the quality of the stain used is really, really poor. Probably the worst of any furniture I've ever assembled. Pic #1 shows the difference in shading of the side pieces vs. the top cross piece- they are nowhere near the same color. Pic #2 shows the almost completely unfinished surface that was on one of the side walls, next to where one of the shelves is attached. This area was very rough to the touch and looks like no one even bothered to try and have it match the rest of the "wood". Overall, while this shelf is advertised as "espresso" color, the majority of it is more dark cherry- there is a strong red undertone, so be aware if you're trying to match to other true espresso pieces. While the packaging was sturdy, the amount of dust on the pieces was crazy- way more than any other furniture I've ever ordered online. It took a ton of repeated dusting/cleaning to get all of it off. Finally, I have to say that everything you read about the smell in other reviews is totally true- this thing has an incredibly powerful chemical stench. It's located in a room as far away from my bedroom as you can get in my house, but when I went to bed the first night after assembling it, the smell pervaded the house so strongly that it seemed like the shelf was next to me. After 3 days of opening all of my office windows and letting the breeze clear the air, the smell has finally abated. Had I known, I would have assembled the shelf in my garage and let it sit out there a week before bringing into the house. Bottom line, I suppose that as a shelf, it does what it's supposed to, but I would not recommend to anyone who is planning to use it as a decorative piece in a highly visible area.

A handsome piece of furniture

OK, first about the strong smell. Yes, out of the box, the smell of off-gassing is strong. I wiped it down with a 50-50 mix of water and vinegar, and it disappeared. The bookshelf is sturdy and quite handsome, and the size is perfect, very compact. Good quality for the price.

Good, reliable flat-pack.

[Pat’s True Review: I bought this. 2020] This is the third piece of furniture I purchase on Amazon from Winsome Wood and, as with the other two, I am left fully satisfied. As far as affordable flat pack go, I’ve seen a lot worse and not much better. You have to understand that these are built to a price, so more than anywhere, you get what you pay for. Winsome Wood Keeps price low by using creative designs and cutting down on the frills. However, they do not skimp below what would be an acceptable level of quality: The OSB is fairly rigid, the connecting pieces are of decent quality, the veneer looks good if obviously thin. Instructions are well documented and easy to follow. Construction makes sense. Final product isn’t a heirloom you’ll leave your kids, but looks good. This is perfect if you need something utilitarian on the cheap, or for an unbudgeted expense needed in the now... Or, if like me, you'd rather do furniture assembly than tabletop puzzles during a pandemic quarantine. I am very satisfied. Good job.

Toxic Smell, Poor Quality

I never ever write reviews (this is only the 2nd time in my life I have ever written a review about anything), but I feel like people need to be warned about this. I read through the reviews before purchasing the cabinet, but thought that, like most online reviews, people may have been exaggerating somewhat. I was very VERY wrong. As soon as we opened the box, the smell was overpowering. I thought my husband was being ridiculous, so he put it together anyway. I should mention that the wood pieces had some slight scratches on them from the manufacturing process, as if they'd been dragged or slid across a surface. The hardware didn't fit correctly, so we had to improvise to get it together. Overall, not the end of the world, we got it together and it looked nice enough. Except for the smell. I wiped it down with a damp cloth as well as Lysol wipes every day for a week. And we waited. The smell was so bad that it traveled throughout the house (this was upstairs in my son's room). It took us 2 days with all of the windows open and the unit shut tight in a bedroom to get the smell out of the house, but my son couldn't sleep in his room. Being ever so optimistic, I assumed it needed to air out similar to getting new carpeting installed when you have to wait for it to stop emitting the gases over a few days. A week later the smell was just as bad as when we opened the box, and my son is still not in his room. I did take some time to get up close to inspect it to see if I could figure out where the smell was coming from. I realized that the wood itself is fine, but the finishing products that they used (the paint/stain, lacquer, or both) are emitting the toxic smell. After all of this, I contacted the manufacturer to see if they could tell me what to do to get rid of it. Their response was as follows: "Hello, we apologize for the inconvenience I don’t know why there is a smell on the furniture. Please contact place of purchase for a return." Considering how many reviews discuss this issue, I have a very difficult time believing that they did not know about the issue. Obviously there is a chemical in their finishing products that is emitting a gas. Whether it is actually toxic or not I don't know for sure, but judging by the smell I wouldn't be surprised. It was so bad I wouldn't let my kids near it - that should tell you something right there. Buyer beware.

Delightful Addition to My Home

I'm very pleased with this purchase. The quality is good, and the piece was easy to assemble, particularly with a power tool. I think it fits in with most home decor; it certainly does with mine. I highly recommend this furniture based on my experience.

Just OK

Quality is just OK. Easy to set up with cam locks and screws but only medium quality I would say. Plus the two baskets are a little on the smelly side.
