houes dashed to replace High Sierra Underseat Roller
For many years I've used a High Sierra tiny rolling suitcase as my daily computer bag. It is wearing out and needs replaced. I need something that can hold a change of clothes with a computer that's accessible from the outside without showing off my laundry. I thought this bag might have a large enough front pouch to achieve this and really liked the USB feature, but in addition to having fewer accessible storage compartments from the outside, the large one was too small even for a tiny convertible executive laptop. Rather than make do I have returned it immediately. It is disappointing that the High Sierra model I got at Costco seems to no longer be in production but hopefully I can find a substitute before my current one completely falls apart.

Gift
Purchased for a handicapped friend. It’s easy fir her to carry on her wheelchair and fits right under her seat. Much easier than a carry on or backpack!

Great Underseater!
The main purpose of this bag is to fit underneath the (coach) seat in front of you on a typical commercial airliner. It is small enough to do just that in most cases, at least in my experience. Of course that is unlikely the case for less conventional seat (i.e., business class or corporate jet) but that’s a very different “problem.” Anyway, as a carry-on it has to comply to various rules in size (and sometime weight). Small commuters doe not have the overhead space as a larger plane and for that the “underseater” is also a viable option for overhead storage, which a normal carry-on doesn’t always fit. The pricing on Amazon fluctuates seemingly daily between the typical $139 (same list price on Samsonite website) and the current low point of $79. The latter is a great deal! The Solyte DLX is a safe design in terms of compartments, fabric and color. Nothing screams, “eccentric” here and that’s a good thing for business travelers. The size is great for just enough cloths for 1-2 days and the suspended laptop sleeve is a great idea to safely store your computer (or tablet). The sleeve partially detaches to allow access to the main compartment. The front pocket has a few more little compartment to keep you organized. The handle extends to different heights and adjusts to the traveler’s height for a comfortable handling. I like the regular wheels instead of the increasingly popular spinners. For one it’s less likely to roll off on a sloped surface and it’s more natural to pull such a small bag than the pushing one typically ends up doing with spinners. As it has gotten quiet around “smart luggage”, Samsonite is still including the option to have a battery pack inside and a USB port on the outside of easy access. Of course, you still need a cord but the ide is good. In the case of this design, the pocket to hold the battery (or other items) is large enough to store a massive 32800 mAh battery pack and still have room for the cable to route normally. This proved impossible with a Samsonite Armage carry-on. Unlike that bag, however, the DLX does not have an integrated locking mechanism. Overall quality is great and durability should provide years of service. At that size you’re less likely check this bag anyway and avoid the roughest handling. One small oversight was easily fixed with a scalpel as the USB port was initially blocked by some extra fabric. That’s easily fixed, provided you don’t discover it on a trip and knives are a taboo on flights nowadays.

Smaller than needed
I have not yet used this for travel, so cannot comment on its durability or ease of shoving under the airplane seat. My only observation so far is that it is too small to put my laptop in. It has a laptop sleeve but is meant for smaller laptops. Also, the inside under the laptop sleeve is a large open space, without pockets or dividers, so I will have to pack items into containers to keep them tidy. It looks well-made.

Nice carryon
I got this because I wanted a small wheeled carry on bag. It holds quite a bit but I wish these bag manufacturers would make the computer/tablet padded section removable. It would give travelling without a conmputer more room.

IMO it's a dated design
This review is specifically for the underseater. I haven't traveled with it, so can't comment on the durability, but from what I can see the quality is indeed very good. The wheels are smooth and seem very solid, the telescoping handle seems sturdy and has easy one-hand operation, the materials are pretty and fancy-looking. I love how the carrying handle on top pops out and slides back in, btw. I just couldn't shake the feeling that the suitcase is... dated. I could live with it being two wheels rather than a spinner because I believe that means it has more room inside, but just overall I felt like this luggage would have been all the rage maybe a decade ago, I just wasn't sure how well it would serve me going forward. I don't know - the zipper pulls with holes that align for a manual lock, the way the laptop sleeve is made, the organization in the outer pocket for cards and pens rather than a single good size pocket for a smartphone (and perhaps something that blocks RFID?..), even just the overall design, starting with that protuberant logo - they all screamed of decades past to me. I also wish that there was a side pocket for a bottle or an umbrella (the one for the battery is very flat and stiff). Also, I haven't had a phone that uses standard USB in several years now, they are all USB-C. I think one of my old chargers had a cable that's USB-C on one end and standard USB on the other, but I am not sure I've kept it. I mean, I don't know, maybe I am being too nitpicky, but it's just that even opening that flap that covers the USB port on the suitcase, it looked outdated to me. Although, in fairness, I am not sure how many specifically *underseat* suitcases with a USB-C port are currently available on the market (or if they exist at all). I don't know why Monos and Away still don't have any *wheeled* underseat bags, so I guess I'll keep looking. UPDATE: I have since bought the hardside Samsonite Silhouette underseater and am much happier with it, both form and function. I should note that even though the Solyte is noticeably shorter than the Silhouette, it's actually both wider and thicker, by about an inch. When traveling carry-on only I don't want to take any chances that it won't fit or that I'd be forced to check my luggage, so this is yet another reason I am happier with the Silhouette.
