Perfect ice trays! How have I never used these before?!
Well I'm a college kid, and wanted something cheap (which i never knew ice trays were actually more than .99?!?!) and I started reading reviews on ice trays! What is wrong with me?! Anyway, I have a small fridge and I use ice a lot, whether making mixed drinks or ice water. I had one of those plastic ones, that I thought were the only type to exist, and one day is cracked in half, and I was iceless.. no bueno! The thought of rubber trays intrigued me, because people said you can remove the ice one at a time, sweet! They also said the ice cubes were big, and didn't take much to cool your drink... double sweet! I have a small fridge, more resourceful the better. So I took a shot heres what I found out about Tovolo Perfect Cube Ice trays. First of all, I actually didn't realize they were a set of two until I opened the package! That is awesome, most sets that were more expensive were only ship as 1 item, so instantly I'm pretty psyched! Secondly, Amazon reviewers, they weren't kidding about ice trays being bigger than normal. They were about twice the size of my last ice cubes, and I think perfect size for making drinks! I also see why perfect cube ice tray gots its name... and now using it for several months, I really like the big cube shapes! Enough jabber, whats good, whats bad, what reviewer myths did I confirm or BUST! Pros: - Big Ice cubes, Lots of cubes. I like my whiskey and diet cokes icy cold, and a tray of ice last me for at least 8 drinks, pretty sweet! - Rubber material is very durable. I make ice water maybe 10 times a day, and other drinks pretty often, and after three months wear and tear these things seriously look brand new! My other ice tray only lasted 4 months (u suck plastic!) - Easy cube removal: Admittingly its a little awkward figuring out how to get the ice cubes out at first, but with some practice it becomes second nature, and you dont have to crack the damn cubes loose every time you get ice like plastic trays, this one you just push up from below the cube you wants, its pops out a little, and you grab it, super easy, and other ice cubes don't go flying everywhere! - COMES WITH TWO TRAYS! sweet value in my opinion! - The big cubes look cool! I have a few people comment on how awesome the ice looks in the drinks when they come over, so yea theres that.. Pros: - May be difficult to learn how to take ice cubes out of tray at first, but all you do is push on the bottom to lift them up a little, and just grab them with your other hand. - I didn't know about these kind of ice trays sooner... seriously, they are cheaper and a thousand times more convenient. Myths from reviews: there's always mixed reviews on certain things, heres what I found. Question: The ice trays reak of chemical smell after some use? answer: NO, maybe a tiny hint of plastic smell, but I just washed them anyway when I got them, and never smelled anything since Question: The ice cubes are impossible to take out of tray? Answer: maybe at first, but after you try it a couple times it become 100x easier than using normal ice trays! Heres what you do: Step 1: bend the tray to create a little separation from the ice cubes from the tray. Step 2: From underneath the ice cube you want press up Step 3: When ice cube raises up, simply grab with your other hand, and easy as pie! Overall, with the large ice cubes for little space in my freezer I am very happy. You get two set of ice trays, which actually makes them almost the cheapest I could find for amount of ice produce. And the plastic was perfect to easy ice removal (if you're not an idiot and figure out the easy way of doing it) I mean come on, I'll be completely wasted, and have ZERO problem getting ice from it. When I use regular ice tray when I'm drunk, I'm lucky if half the ice cubes make it in the drink before they hit my floor! GOOD PURCHASE!

Very durable. Sometimes the silicone freezes to the ice though... hard to remove the ice cubes.
I've twisted it every which way, and it's still typically pretty hard to get an ice cube out. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. A little hot water on the outside of the tray goes a long way. I mostly got these because I keep having plastic ice cube trays break, and these are supposed to be pretty durable. They sure feel durable. Very good value for the price.

THIS IS A RE-REVIEW: I HAVE A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM!! In just a few days after my initial review - my initial ecstatic review - my trays developed the "fug" or "funk" that some of the others have described. Whatever it was that flavored my ice cubes - they started tasting like a freezer condenser smells. So I ordered another round of these trays and another LARGE square cube tray - and added the spheres while I was at it - why not? The basic problem is that silicone is not a suitable substance for use in the freezer as it absorbs everything that comes into contact with it - whether from dishwashing or just sitting in the freezer waiting to freeze - the trays are magnets for lots of stinky stuff. Stinky stuff that will end up in your ice cubes. I detailed the solution to the first problem below: NEVER WASH YOUR ICE CUBE TRAYS WITH DETERGENTS - NEVER - WHETHER YOU WASH YOUR DISHES BY HAND OR IN THE DISHWASHER. A RINSE WITH HOT WATER SHOULD BE ALL THAT IS REQUIRED AND THAT ONLY FROM TIME TO TIME. (The manufacturers recommend washing the trays in a diluted solution of vinegar and water periodically. I am going to try that with my former set of trays but I don't "relish" vinegar-scented ice cubes!) Second: I use triple-filtered water in these trays. Not the stuff directly from the tap. Or if you want ice cubes that are clear you should use water that has been boiled and then allowed to cool. Third and this was my partners innovation: After they are filled, I am now placing the filled ice cube trays in freezer bags and then sealing them so the trays and iced cubes will not be exposed to the freezer at all - ever - during the freezing process. And, as I also described below, I store the finished frozen ice cubes in a sealed disposable freezer keeper so - again - they do not have the opportunity to absord "stuff" that will make them smell and taste nasty . This may seem like more trouble than they are worth but these cubes really are the PERFECT size and I feel they warrant all the attention! (What an innovative solution JP! Thanks for the suggestion.) MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: I usually don't care for silicone especially in bakeware. But these ice cube trays are just the ticket and they live up to their name = they make perfectly sized ice cubes. Even the silicone is a bit easier to use here and the ice cubes pop out effectively. Perhaps because the cube trays are really not that big - although 2 trays just fill a large Gladware container perfectly and you can store your ice cubes in an airtight environment. Even after many rounds of ice cube making the trays never lose their shape. I, too, do not understand the quibbles with these trays. They, themselves, do not impart any smell at all and lend no scent to the ice cubes either. I keep my freezer impeccably clean and I have a box of baking soda in the freezer as well as the refrigerator - so maybe that's the difference. Also, I never wash silicone in detergent as that will be absorbed by the trays and your ice cubes will be perfumed and make your cubes taste like Dawn or Ivory or Joy or whatever you use. Not good. Again, it's the size that is the innovation here and that is the aspect of the cubes that pleases me most.

Brilliant Cubes
Product exactly as described and delivered very quickly. Purchased my first ones mid 2013 and still going strong, really pleased with them so bought some more for ice cubes a plenty! A robust but flexible material, easy to fill and very easy to remove the cubes. Cubes are a good large size (3.2 cm) so they do not melt quickly and dilute the drink.

Perfect sized ice cubes
I have tried many different ice cube trays but somehow tovolo have managed to get the optimum type of silicone. It is solid enough that you can carry it filled from the sink to the freezer without spilling water everywhere, but is stretchy enough to allow cubes to be easily removed. It's expensive but I expect it will last a lifetime.

Really not happy with these
I had a similar set of silicone ice cube trays that were absolutely perfect: the bottom of the trays was a bit thin and wobbly, which meant that I had to pay attention when filling them and taking them to the freezer, but it also meant that the ice cubes came out easily. I ended up giving them to a friend and then purchasing these trays to replace them, as I couldn't tell which brand my other trays were. The base on these trays is much thicker and more stable, which makes it easier to carry them to the freezer, but it also means that it's harder to get the ice cubes out. If I hadn't had the other trays before, I might be happy with these, as they're much better than the usual plastic ice trays. Very bendable, and no worries about them breaking.
