Perfect For A Full Foam Exchange - Misleading Advertising
A hardcore ehiem fan for 35 years, it was a slow progression over to the FX5 of which I now run three. The filter are beasts especially if you keep messy fish you see the pay off almost immediately. Still an ehiem fan and swear by their build quality but when you can you buy three FX5's for the price of one 1200 XL - and that's without media it's a no brainer. They both have pro's and con's I find the FX5's far too dependant on mechanical filtration, when those pieces of foam load up with gunk not only does your GPH suffer but water parameters become unstable. In an established tank there's enough nitrifying bacteria in your media and substrate to maintain the delicate eco system in your tank. The foam however should just be tossed and replaced. Keep in mind it takes TWO packages for a complete foam change. Hagen which owns Fluval has been notorious for decades in over hyped non certified flow rates, the push for replacing and selling media and positioning products like a simple replacement foam which leads the consumer to think it's an all inclusive deal. Why they don't give you all the foam you need and up the price or vice a versa and let you know up front only half of what you need is included. Thank's to a another reviewer I knew to order two packages per filter X 3 - you do NOT want to leave half of the dirty foam in your filter. Clogged foam only increases water bypass, trapped air and a significantly reduced flow rate. Aside from that, the foam is good quality. If I had the patience I would simply buy my own foam sheets and cut it myself. I do the same with 800 micro polishing pads but for me it's not about saving a few dollars and everything about crystal clear, pristine water. The price on Amazon is by far the best I've seen. I added a few boxes or blue and white coarse and fine pads and the total with 2 day Free shipping via my Prime membership was under $100 - about a 20% saving over the big aquaria e-commerce sites.

Great, Clear water, Best buy, Fits FX4/5/6 Use with other canisters as well
Well if you have seen any of my review's about Fluval or Seachem product's, you undoubtedly will come to a conclusion that I only use those 2 product's & I buy in bulk for the best price or use Amazon Subscribe & Save. Why? Because they work plane and simple, I have seen the off brands at great price's and even gave them a shot, while the off brand is a bit thinner they do a decent jobI I found that at least in my setups (multiple very large tanks and heavenly stocked African Cichlids and SA/CAs which are very very large and messy fish) the off brands clogged up a bit faster. I am a fantic when it comes to maintaining my tanks. I run a total of 5 Fluval FX6 filters (2 in my African 135 and 3 in my 220 CA/SA along with 3 Fluval FX4 in my other 3 tanks from 30 to 90 gallon) These polishing pads really trap and polish the water combined with The White Fluval pads and water is crystal clear giving the illusion my fish are floating on mid air. These filter pads work in many other canister filters as well with very little effort. Bottom line if you run any of the Fluval FX series these pads are a must and are worth every penny!

Why packs of 3?
I have absolutely no idea, why these come in packs of 3? I have the fx6, so I require 6, to fill the trays. The fx4 requires 4? This is not too bad for me, as I buy to packs and sorted, the fx4 owners must be fuming? Why not pack in two's makes much more sense? These are relatively expensive for what they are as well.

The perfect compromise to floss
These seem to be the perfect compromise between filter floss and nothing at all. I was finding that my filter floss was clogging within a few days and the flow was slowing down so much that the oxygen levels were getting dangerously low. I had to keep pulling the fx6 out and cleaning it every two to three days, and any of you reading this that already own one will know that it's quite a pain to lug around. I have just done my first 7 days with these, and they were brown and full of particles, but the flow of the filter hadn't slowed down at all, so I'm very impressed. They obviously don't catch quite as much as fine floss, but they stop your filter from slowing down to a trickle, so for me, these are the perfect compromise. I have also found that they don't seem to fall apart like the floss once they have been cleaned, they seem like they will last a long long time before they need replacing. I couldn't recommend these enough!

Three?
Liked: Fluval quality and perfect for for my FX4. Disliked: three?! The FX4 has 4 and the FX6 has 6 but you can only buy packs of 3. So if I wanted to replace all 4 in my FX4 I’d have to buy 2 packs and I’d have two left over. Utterly ridiculous.

High maintenance but works
These are ok however they do get clogged up very quickly depending on how heavily stocked your tank is. I had to change the pad after less than a month on the first run and then decided to run an internal filter with some filter wool within to act as a fine polisher, this works well for me and allows me to change the filter wool frequently without disassembling my external canister filter. I suppose if you don't mind regularly disassembling your external canister filter for small maintenance like replacing this bad then it would be a very good purchase.

Block your filter up quickly
These get blocked very quickly and I notice the flow rate diminish fast I would not use them again. I did have fine floss media underneath and it was only around the sides that water had hit it note my bio load is light and I have 3 of them running on my 150 gallon so now that I have removed them and use double fine floss I can easily not maintain my filters for 4 months on a rolling cycle.
