Truly 18 Gauge Unlike Similar Products
I installed a new smart thermostat on a 40 foot run with this wire and everything worked beautifully. It's a solid18ga copper wire, as measured with my stripper, that is safe for longer runs. Less expensive 5 wire products on Amazon claim to be 18ga but are actually 20ga, which is not up to code and not recommended especially for runs over about 15 ft. This wire handled and stripped well and there were no defects except the plastic spool arrived broken because Amazon shipped it in an envelope instead of a box.

Perfect for thermostats...
The quality of this wire is great, nice solid conductors.

Need the 5 wire for Smart Thermostats
Old thermostats only had 2 or more wires, and ran on batteries or just an old mercury switch. New smart WiFi thermostats use the 24 volts from the furnace transformer, that requires an additional wire to complete the circuit. This 5 conductor wire is the replacement you'll need for a basic gas furnace with central air conditioning. Heat pumps, emergency auxillary heat, etc will require the 8 conductor wire. • Red - 24 volts • White - Heat control • Green - Fan control • Yellow - AC control • Blue - 24v Common

Used offering not quite correct
This review is for the used wire. Wire itself appears to be brand new with spool edges smashed (Watch it, they are jagged). What you might need to be aware of is that the wire size is mislabled by the manufacturer ...which is likely why it ended up in the "used" catagory. The wire size is (according to two different wire tools of mine) AWG 20, not AWG 18. Good buy, if AWG 20 works for you.

Perfect solution for Nest Thermostat Wifi issues
My Nest thermostat (3rd gen) is 3yrs old. It suddenly lost connection to Wifi due to lack of battery power. Nothing has changed since first time installation. My conclusion was internal battery was losing its life cycle... and needed extra 'C' cable hooked up (I only have Rh and W now). I had bit of hard time running new line through wall, but when I was done, battery voltage was restored to 3.90-3.93v, instead of 3.6x. I'm glad I didn't have to call electrician for this simple task, eventually saved some money!

Smart thermostat installation checklist
Exactly what I needed to relocate my Ecobee smart thermostat to a new location that made sense for my home. The wire is stiff, as you would expect from solid core wiring. Consider a fish tape, if you're a DIYer like me, and you have a long wire run. Measure 5 times, cut one hole in the wall.
