Huge and Heavy-Duty. Ideal for a serious ankle injury.
This item offers heavy-duty cold that hits all the right places for an ankle injury. Basically there are four pockets inside the wrap, and each one holds a good-sized ice pack. The ice packs can also be heated for hot/cold treatments. This thing is huge and heavy-duty, appropriate for a very serious injury as well as minor issues. We haven't tested it, but it seems to hold the cold for a decent amount of time, always for as long as my son has needed it. It doesn't give the kind of all-over compression we were hoping for. It's basically just a wrap with velcro closures, nothing like an ACE bandage or a compression sleeve. But it does do a great job pressing the ice firmly onto all the right places. It's a little unwieldy - four ice packs to freeze and keep track of, and a huge wrap to store. But this is what you want if you have a serious ankle injury. My son just has a minor strain right now, but he still likes this and uses it every day. We also have a different cold pack for ankles,Health Enterprises 360 Therapy Universal Brace . The 360 brace is much smaller and thinner, with built-in hot/cold gel packs instead of removable ice packs. The 360 is easy to fit in the freezer, simple, and great for tired ankles after a game. But in case of a serious injury, the 360 wouldn't hold a candle to the Shock Doctor. The instructions say that this can be microwaved, but that's not practical. You have to be really careful so you don't pop the packs, microwaving one at a time. And it takes forever to get them all the right temperature. But the hot water method has worked great. As soon as my son has wrapped his ankle with the ice packs, he sets a pan of water on the stove. When he's done with the ice, the water is ready and he can quickly switch to a heat treatment. I read that these can run large. My son wears men's size 13 shoes, so we got the X-large. If anything it's still a bit big on him.

Perfect for sprained ankles!
I (middle-age) mom severely sprained my ankle, with a hairline fracture. My ankle *hurt* and my typical ice pads/bags just weren't working that great. In a stroke of desperation, I sent a family member to purchase one of these from a local sporting goods store. Oh, the relief, and just what I needed! Other family members has used this one, and when the long-distance athlete moved out on his own and sprained his ankle, I bought him his own to have on hand - and he was thankful for it. Tip - remove ice packs, then wash and air dry; replace the ice packs and put it inside a heavy-duty ziploc bag to store it in the freezer. It will stay clean and ready to use when you need it!

Great quality but more low leg than ankle/foot
I bought this wrap for an ankle surgery because I wasn't able to get my hands on a cryotherapy machine in time. To speak objectively on the wrap, the quality of the wrap itself and the ice packs is great. You can get quite a bit of compression from it if you need. The ice packs are pretty awesome. They hold their cold for a long time and though they get a bit stiff, don't freeze solid. My only complaint is that it doesn't really cover the foot part of the ankle. The ice packs are on the leg side of the wrap and end right at the top of the foot. I'm not sure how many ankle injuries don't actually involve the the ankle joint itself, but maybe it's because I'm fairly petite that it's not where it should be. I got a small/medium (I am 5'3" and 115#). A large would be a little Overkill for me and would lose the compression at the bottom. My incision makes it uncomfortable to slide the wrap all the way on so Ive been wearing it a little low. I wish I could get it on all the way because the ice packs and encompassing cold is pretty awesome.

Worth the money, easy to use
Got this to use for after my ankle surgery, the idea it offered of compression/ice therapy combined without cumbersome ice bags and towels was amazing. Unfortunately have not been able to use it much until recently. The ice packs have been used on their own nearly daily since my surgery. One thing to note: the ice packs get extremely cold - yeah that sounds odd right? I mean think salt+ice+water cold - it holds a temp closer to that of your freezer. Even though this product keeps the ice packs away from your skin with its own barrier I really recommend putting a sock or something on as well. Very easy to use, ice packs do not take long to get cold - was able to rotate them 20min on/20min off Extremely adjustable for hopefully maximum comfort - however being post op - comfort with this isn’t really there - you can feel the hard shape of the ice pack - they don’t mold to your leg (they seem to freeze nearly solid)

Cold! Good quality
I fractured my fibula above the ankle but after a couple of days my ankle was quite swollen. I prefer to use ice massage but there are only so many times a day I can conveniently do that so I bought this as a supplement. Overall i like it. I knocked off one star because I don’t know how you’d get this on without pain if your actual ankle was injuried. It is painful to me and my injury is above the ankle. The strap in the foot area is fixed (elastic but not adjustable) so you have to shove your foot through what to me seemed like kind of a small opening. The bands around the lower leg as are adjustable with Velcro. The packs get very cold. I use a light sock under it and have to leave it out at least 30 mins before I put it on. That being said, I can use it twice before refreezing it. (Up to ~90 mins apart). Good quality product I’d buy from them again.

Best to sleep with overnight to protect bedding- but not ...
Expect to sit with it. Take 5+ hrs to freeze. Incredibly heavy only meant for serious injuries- weight makes it uncomfy/painful to move around in for the injury. Best to sleep with overnight to protect bedding- but not ideal to move around in the house during healing.
