Great for Flat Line, Dipsy, Downrigger rods where quick fighting of fish is needed.
Purchased 2, then 2 more after using the first set. I have Scotty PowerLock rod holders as well (they work good for salmon fishing, musky fishing and walleye fishing as well) and for Salmon fishing with Dipsy divers I wanted something quick to get the entire rod out of the holder quickly and easy for my two younger boys who like to go fishing as well for Coho, Browns... Kings I will take the rod as they put up a hard fight early. These fit the bill to a T and at the launch last weekend a guy asked about how we rig our boat for Salmon fishing and I showed him the rod holders and he and his wife agreed worth the extra money to get the rod out quickly after trying both the powerlock and Orca's. Key is to pick up the front of the rod slightly before the back and make sure someone didn't lock the white knob at the end as I read a few reviews where people couldn't get them to work. If you pull the back up first it will not release which is good because that keeps it locked when a fish hits or you snag something. I always check drag settings because King Salmon can push over 30# and they love to grab a bite to eat and run for the other shore. I see no issues in these holding up and very high quality for a fair price. Originally was looking at another brand but I have 12 rod holders and that cost was hard to justify. I use PowerLocks on my planner board rods and these for Dipsy and downrigger stacker rod (downrigger has holder for main). Everyone that fishes with me likes this mixture of holders and no complaints on not being able to get the rod out in time. Always give them a few practice pulling out a rod when new guys go out with me to make sure they understand how to use prior to a fish. My 8 and 11 yr old kids can pull out with a fish on but no question they only come out when you pull them out not the fish. If you have older non locking scotty bases already on your boat or come with other Scotty holders these work in those bases as well but these lock which is nicer for use as any pulling up action doesn't move the holder. In the non locking bases when you're done fighting the fish you might need to press the rod holder back into the index spot you want (again only if you have other scotty non locking bases already on your boat that don't lock). Not a issue with the bases that come with these as they lock down and push a button and they release and also work with other scotty rod holders. I have about 1/2 locking and 1/2 non locking bases on my boat. I use the non locking in area's I swing the rod positions when reeling in a fish like the back of the boat down the chute and in the front location for planner boards holders as I don't use these Orca's in those location. Locations like Dipsy divers where I don't swing the rods locations I use locking bases. The mix of Orca and Powerlock IMO is a good mixture for all around fishing where planner boards don't require instant fighting of the fish as the board gives you some reaction time but downriggers and dipsy divers or flat line rods these are great to have on board and complement the powerlocks nicely on a full spread. I run up to 12 rods in a 19ft boat w/o any problems, I do have 4 holder in the front of the boat to help keep lines apart on planner boards is running all 12. If you find the angle isn't right they make a friction pad Blue and Green disk so you and infinitely adjust these or other scotty rod holders. I use these for flat lining so I can get the tips of the rods closer to the water. They hold perfect even on the Orca's as I flat line at times while walleye fishing and like the quick access to the rod to avoid a shaker getting line and losing a fish.

Great product, but missing #241L Side Deck Mount
The rod holder is great. My only disappointment was it didn't come with the #241L Side Deck Mount as advertised. I had an alternative mount so am happy to keep the rod holder and not send it back. I would have a use for the Deck Mount, if it had been included.

Hard to take the rod out
I like the idea of this rod holder and it does work well though you have to really rip the rod out of the holder for the clamp to open. Maybe I am wrong but I feel as if this is going to break my rod eventually as I have heard my handle make a small crack twice while pulling up and the clamp failing to release.

Great rod holders
Got to salmon fish with these a couple of times and I love them. Really heavy duty. I have them on extensions and they work great. Really easy to get the pole out of and keeps the rod secured perfectly. You do have to lift the pole out slightly tip first but that is the natural way to remove a rod anyway. Not sure these would be my first choice kokanee fishing but for salmon they work great. The only reason I don't rate them 5 stars is the adjustment on all scotty rod holders is crude at best. Cannons have a much better control system for tilting the rod angle. Yes you can by slip disks for the Scotty's but by the time you add slip disks and extensions to these rod holders you are well over $50 each. Honestly they are something that should come with the rod holders.

Easy to open!! Just like setting the hook is the KEY.
Arrived today and well this thing is sweet and can't wait to get it mounted to the boat. I love the new style locking push or pull to lock much better the the large white ring on the older models. Open and close by hand very easy, after reading many reviews of issues not being able to open by hand WOW....you must not of read the new design. You must open the unit by pulling up on the front section only and flipping open. Just picture yourself setting the hook with the rod, that is the secret a smooth upward lift from the front of the holder only. No need to touch the rear section at all.

Hit and miss
I bought two of these along with the push button release mounts. 1 of them was tight but worked. The other wouldn’t release the pole. It was so tight that it would pop the lock on the mount if you tried to get your pole out. After working it a few hundred times, it’s still very tight. But I can finally get the rod out of the holder without popping the mount lock. On the positive side They are super heavy duty, if they ever loosen up they will be great.

Best rod holder on the market !
After trying several other slightly cheaper manufacturers models, I finally took the plunge and bought Scotty Orca rod holders for my boat. Design, construction, rod security and operation are flawless. Why scrimp on the cost when you will have 100’s invested in rods and reels. Wish I had at the time.

Strong and sturdy, but a little hard to open when first inserting a rod.
I bought this rod holder and mounted it near my drivers seat. It is extremely sturdy and should be capable of safely holding a very large fish. It also looks professional and the Scotty mount is both sturdy disconnects easily. My only complaint is that it can take a lot of force to open the rod holder in order to place the rod inside. The first few times I was almost worried that I would break it. It has gotten easier with use so it isn't a big issue. Strangely though it has always opened easily when removing the rod. The locking mechanism is also sturdy and easy to use. It was quite a bit more expensive than the other Scotty mounts and I'm not quite convinced it is worth the premium. But if you are looking for a very strong and sturdy rod holder you can't go wrong.

Excellent unit
Very function when you have to drive the boat, deal with impatient whiny kids, & want to go fishing/catch something. Same price comparable with Cabela’s however, Cabela’s had it 10% cheaper during an online sale.
