100% Perfect Now (after 95% the first month)
[Updated because the early issues are completely gone] This purchase was an exact duplicate of the Schlage model & finish that I had to discard after 10 years of use. I expected more than 10 years, but really can't complain. This replacement works exactly the same, which is a good thing. During the first month only, this new unit occasionally failed to open the lock until the second try. All but one of those failures was for locking on the way out; just one time unlocking on the way in. After that first 30 days, everything has worked perfectly. I didn't call Schlage customer service because the need wasn't severe and because the issue was both infrequent and fixable on retry. Using the key instead of buttons always worked, so I was never really locked out. No big worries, so four stars initially - five stars now. My identical previous front door lock did not have this problem. Well, at least not until it died. But by that point even the key didn't work. I wish it had lasted longer than ten years. But I obviously like this model because I bought another one just like it. Oh - and I chose it originally because of a top rating from Consumer Reports years ago. Comparing my Schlage deadbolt (two now) to my original non-Schlage keypad lock, this model is definitely an improvement. The original used an internal motor to throw & retract the deadbolt. I thought I would prefer this feature, but I soon ran into problems when the internal plastic gears got stripped whenever the deadbolt wasn't perfectly aligned going into the door jamb or had too much friction coming out - common for my front doorframe from slight hot/cold weather warping. To be clear, this was a problem on a different deadbolt lock which is why I switched to this Schlage model where I provide the locking & unlocking force (no motor) after pushing buttons. I haven't found anything plastic in this Schlage product. A final note: This deadbolt lock is fairly easy to install if you follow the easy-to-read instructions, i.e., not broken English from some poor translation. It's not a simple as, say, a plug-and-play USB for your computer. But most home front doors won't need any tools beyond a normal-sized screwdriver. Then "programming" the combination is crazy simple, again by following the clear instructions. It's nice too that they supply the 9-volt battery because I never stock those at home. The product has that heavy solid-metal heft that you want for home protection.

*Two locksmiths and a ball-peen hammer couldn't get through this thing. So there's that.*
I have never been so incredibly angry at a lock in my life, yet here I am purchasing another. Why? Glad you asked. Three years ago we purchased our first Schlage keypad deadbolt for our MIL suite door and we loved it so much we bought two more for our other exterior doors. It's amazing how much your life improves when you don't have to worry about carrying/losing keys. We changed the batteries on every New Year's Day as a rule, just to be on the safe side. The override keys were stored in a safe place, or so I thought. I'm sure you can see where this is headed. Yep! Locked out in the pouring rain with guests arriving in five hours. The battery died after I'd accessed the suite to collect the linens. I'd locked the door behind me, went downstairs to load the washer, and when I returned it was a red blinking light and I was out of luck. But I knew where the key was, so no problem! Except that the key wasn't where it belonged AT ALL and my husband had just boarded an airplane. Did I mention it was pouring rain? So after a few minutes of panicking and ransacking every drawer in the house, I called a locksmith. I felt instantly calmer when he arrived but alas, he couldn't pick it nor could he couldn't bump it. He tried for 45 minutes in the pouring rain, bless his heart. He called for back up. She couldn't do it, either. They couldn't pick it, they couldn't bump it. They couldn't do anything. Heck, even WITH the key you have to do some Key Gymnastics to engage the bolt and it just wasn't possible to do that with the picks, even with three sets of human hands trying to hold the various bits all at once. She offered to come back and drill the keyhole part but expressed concern that all she'd accomplish would be the destruction of the lock without the benefit of it actually unlocking. She apologized profusely and they left. She gave me the number of "a safecracker" she knew (yeah, I don't know and I didn't ask.) but sadly that call went to voicemail. Maybe he was out busting into banks, who knows. After half a dozen phone calls to locksmiths all over town I was getting more and more frantic. My husband's plane had landed by this point and no, he had no idea where the key was. He did, however, call a friend with some power tools who was kind enough to rescue me. We decided to start violently (since I was so so angry, now) by trying to beat the damned thing off with a ball-peen hammer. No dice. Why? Because that damned thumbturn just spins and spins and spins. Pretty brilliant design when you think about it. ANYWAY, he finally got in by removing the door trim and sawing through the bolt with a freakin' 6" grinder blade and even THAT took a spell. Then he replaced it with a cheapie Kwikset he had on-hand so my guests could lock their suite. It was an unbelievably stressful day that I do not ever wish to repeat. That being said: I sure did sleep better knowing how damned hard it would be to break into the house via the doors! SO here I am, buying a replacement. Was I ticked off the lock didn't seem to give me an adequate enough warning about the battery? Absolutely. But I sure do feel safer knowing what a complete and total pain it was to get through that lock. Our local burglars are just not down for that kind of difficulty. They lack the drive. I highly recommend this thing BUT make sure you buy top-of-the-line batteries. Don't skimp on those and DON'T misplace the key otherwise you're going to need some heavy artillery.

Great Quality
In my previous home I installed the same model of deadbolt (silver color) and used it without any issues for over 13 years and it was still going strong when I left. This is why I ordered the same deadbolt (matte black this time) for my new home. It installed easily and is working great. On both doors, the lock is out of the direct elements in a covered porch area.

Got a replacement by calling customer support!
I guess I'm one of the "lucky" ones because I bought mine in July 2014 and only now is experiencing the symptoms others have reported - namely that the spring loses its elasticity, the pin doesn't engage the lock and the door can't be opened or closed without the key. I called customer support, explained the problem and was glad to learn that they would ship a replacement. Just have the product's serial number on hand. Here's hoping that this replacement will last as long as the previous one - but even if it doesn't, at least it was free!

As an engineer - Easiest lock I've ever installed!
I've been an engineer for over 40 years, so I'm comfortable with most DIY. I had attempted to install a Simplisafe smart lock, which was disastrous. I thought I'd give smart locks one more chance, only this time from a reputable, long standing lock specialist. Whereas the Simplisafe took 3 hours until eventual abandonment, the entire process with this lock took 10 minutes! Be careful not to throw away your instruction sheet afterwards, as there is a sticker on there with your factory programming master code, and x2 reprorogrammable starter codes. Excellent build quality, beautifully smooth operation, and comes with a battery and everything you'll need, besides the screwdriver.

Safer replacement for a keyed lock
I had a few concerns about replacing an older keyed Schlage lock with this digital lock. What happens if the battery runs out? (The battery life is very long, and it will flash a warning as it starts to get low. There is also a manual key if you need to override the digital lock.) What if people use trial and error to guess the combination? (After a few wrong attempts, it will shut off for a minute or so. It would be hard to guess the combination by trial and error.) What happens if someone reveals the combination? (The combination can be changed – that's better than on a keyed lock, where losing a key might mean having to change the lock.) The most difficult part about replacing the lock was that the previous lock used a smaller sized hole, so I had to expand the existing hole. This took me several hours to get right. (It would not have been a problem with a more recent lock or door, which use this lock's standard size.) Once the hole was in place, the lock was quick and easy to install. Changing the combination requires following the instructions carefully (you can't wing it), but is not difficult. The operation of the lock feels solid and satisfying. We can now go out of the house and lock up without having to wonder if other people remembered to take their key.

Excellent quality
I had these for over 13 yrs and they quit working. I bought the same ones again because I knew the quality and that they would fit without any adjustments. Super easy to install. I would suggest they sell them in a double pack so they have the same key for front and back doors but I just took them to a locksmith and got them rekeyed.

Great bit of kit
I bought this lock for a fire door from the kitchen into the garage. It gives easy access from the kitchen and no key access from the garage. It is a substantial bit of kit, but is simple to fit, with excellent instructions. You should note that it is sent from USA, but this was swift and efficient. Recommended.
