Actually a 4.5, here's why...
First off, this is by far the best masher I have ever used. It is built like a tank and should last a lifetime. It also removes lumps admirably while keeping a nice hand-mashed texture--completely unlike the overly whipped mashed potatoes you get from a hand mixer. That said, at the consistency I like, when the potatoes are close to done you can only get in one good mash before clearing the potatoes from the masher (I bang it on the side of the pot). If you don't, there is too much weight over the holes for more potatoes to go though and the potatoes just squish out the sides of the masher. This also happens with deeper batches of potatoes or this can be limited by mashing shallower batches in wider bowls. I feel a more circular mash head or maybe some slightly larger holes around the perimeter could have made a world of difference. So why 5 stars and not 4? Durability of the masher, texture of the potatoes and comfort of the horizontal handle (less grip needed). It's hard to argue with the results this masher is capable of, even if it takes a bit more effort.

Potatoes are quickly and easily mashed resulting in lovely soft mashyness heaven
We have a saying in our family. 'Buy cheap, buy twice' and thats exactly what we did. Before we saw the proverbial light we owned a supermarket brand masher bought out of pure convenience, and boy was that hard to use. Almost made me not want to make mash because it was so difficult to use and required alot of strength to mash, and even then the mash was full of lumps. In comparison this masher is an absolute dream to use. I am not very strong, and yet this masher requires no strength at all to do its job. Potatoes are quickly and easily mashed resulting in lovely soft mashyness heaven. Suffice to say i am very pleased and firmly believe this masher will last us a lifetime. It is made out of one piece of metal so will not snap like other mashers of this style i have looked at. Not to mention it looks quite classy (if a masher can be!?) and ultimately worth every penny. Do not buy a cheaper alternative. This is the only masher you need.

an excellent masher--the best!
I've been using this masher for a couple of months now, and I love it. When it first arrived, I thought it was a bit large and heavy, but I was convinced immediately that it did mash potatoes to a nice fluffy consistency, very close to what a ricer would do. I often use it for carrots too, and that works fine. As long as the vegetables are cooked to a soft stage, they come out fluffy and evenly mashed. Today I was using it again, and I discovered that if you rock the masher slightly from side to side as you mash, it works much quicker and better! The potatoes don't get pressed down too much either. They're even fluffier than usual. Try it! You might be as surprised as I was. The masher cleans up nicely in the dishwasher, but it's easy to clean by hand too. No worries there, and the stainless steel is good quality.

This is a great masher. I didn’t give it 5 stars only ...
This is a great masher. I didn’t give it 5 stars only because it doesn’t turn up on either end which makes It so you can’t rock it...you have to mash straight up and down. Also makes it so you need to use a bigger bowl so that the masher goes all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Mashes quickly and thoroughly, though.

Life is easier now
I love to make mashed potatoes with all sorts of ingredients, like onions, cheese, jalapeños, nuts... But I hate the mashers. I've gone through a bunch over the years. They usually bend and/or their holes get clogged and are difficult to clean. Finally decided, after one frustrating day, to spring for a higher quality product. This is terrific. It is very sturdy and I can mash away without having to bend it back in shape. It looks great and it cleans up easily.

Not as good as hyped.
If you want to mash peeled potatoes, this will do a great job. If you want to leave the peel on for the extra vitamins and flavor, there are better mashers out there. If you want to mash something besides potatoes, forget it. I tried mashing red beans for veggie burgers and I had to toss it aside and use my cheaper, more versatile potato masher. This is not a versatile product and for my money, not worth the price. It is sturdy and will probably last forever and if you only want to mash peeled potatoes I'm sure you'll love it. Otherwise, keep looking.

A very rigid product that will last me a lifetime.
This potato masher was recommended to me from a Jamie Oliver cookbook and I am not disappointed. My only issue is that its completely flat base conflits with all the round mixing bowls that I own which means I have to do all my mashing in flat dishes. A small price to pay for such a well crafted object.

A fantastic masher
This masher is fantastic! I use it to make jam and it makes this work so much easier. It’s very strong and sturdy and makes the mashing of fruit a dream. I love it and have used it for potatoes too. A great and useful purchase!

The Best Potato Masher
This is my fourth potato masher and it is by far the best. The design is sleek and functional. It feels comfortable in your hand; is really sturdy (you can push down on it with quite a bit of force and it won't bend under pressure like a lot of potato mashers); gives smooth and fluffy mash potatoes, and cleans really well in the dishwasher. I usually cook about 5 lbs of potatoes at a time in a medium to large pot and it does the job very well. Before purchasing, I wondered if I would get potato all over my hands because of the shorter handle but his has not been an issue. I find I get best results using yellow-fleshed potatoes and cutting them into approximately 1 cm thick slices before boiling them until very tender. I have had this masher for years and highly recommend it. It is also handy for crushing things like cookies or crackers if you do not want to bring out your rolling pin.

Top quality. The best masher I've owned.
This is a very good masher and the best I've owned. It's comfortable to use and makes mashing easy. I'm especially impressed that the holes don't block up, nor do the front or rear faces need clearing during mashing. I just tap the masher once on the side of the bowl and everything falls back into the mash. The masher is formed from a single plate of thick stainless steel welded to the ergonomic handle. That makes the masher strong and sturdy with no danger of bending in normal use. It stays clean as there are no hidden gaps or corners and no separate parts to come adrift. I've noticed one or two bad reviews saying this product doesn't mash well. I can only think those people aren't cooking their potato or vegetable enough and are expecting the masher to work on undercooked food. I've certainly had no problems and I can't see anyone will if they use the masher as intended. I expect this masher to last for many years so it's well worth the price. It's a good product and I'd recommend it to anyone who's happy to pay a little extra for top quality.

Very good quality Masher
This is superior quality in a masher and does a great job. Those who have trouble gripping will love it as it is very easy to hang on to. The only thing I have to say that could be a problem is it would not work well for large deep pots of potatoes as your hands would get covered in potatoes but for the small and average family size pots it is the best masher I have ever used by far. The thickness of the metal and the base plate where the holes insures it is not ever going to bend inwards as some do. I wish they made a long/higher one as I would get it too. Worth the price hands down!

The style of this masher works great compared to the old style wire masher.
I got this one for a Christmas gift for someone, because it is like one I use already. Fabulous to use and great for mashed potatoes.
