Jr. Footlight vs Manhattan Xtreme comparison...
***UPDATE***: As stated in my review below, I did reorder this in a size 9M just to try. It still gapped and I still hate this shoe. I've taken away an additional star because the fit and look of this shoe are both tragic. My foot looks about 2 sizes bigger than it is, it is cut up extremely high on the outer edge of the foot and super low on the inner edge (why??), and even just standing, the shoe does not hug my foot. ****************************************** So it's been a long time since I've bought new tap shoes. The past few pairs I had were provided for me by the production companies I worked for, but now I find myself 5+ years (and two babies later) teaching again. After 4 hours in my tap shoes last week it was glaringly obvious that my feet have grown (thanks, babies!) and it's time to size up. The exhaustive research began, because I'm a huge nerd about this sort of thing, so hopefully I can save some other like-minded maniacs many hours in front of a computer screen! ;) Although the La Mendolas I was wearing were fine style-wise, I was craving a 2" heel. Capezios have always been my go-to shoe across disciplines (pointe, jazz, tap, teaching sandals) when purchasing myself, and I also own a pair of the 3" character heels that are quite nice, so I thought Capezio would be the way to go. There were no 2" heeled taps to be found however, so at first I considered sizing/purchasing/attaching my own Teletones on a 2" character shoe. In the end I decided to keep it simple, and I went with two shoes that come with taps attached: The Footlight Jr. and the Manhattan Xtreme. ***Footlight Jr.: The Footlight Jr. as advertised, has a 1.5" heel. Right out of the box I thought they looked very strange. The cut is bizarre--the vamp is kind of squared off and asymmetrical, fitting slightly higher on the outer edge of the foot. (Picture a "D" shape on the right foot, and that's what you get.) I also had visible toe cleavage, which I've literally never experienced in a character or heeled tap shoe before. Finally, the color seemed off to me. I ordered Tan, and although the box confirms that is what I received, I would describe the color as closer to what I would imagine the Caramel color would be. It was a much darker--and not terribly flattering--color that I don't think would match ANY of the nude tights I own (most of which are also Capezios, incidentally). Based on previous reviews and the many fit guides I consulted online, I ordered the Jr. Footlight in two sizes--8.5W and 9W. Prior to babies I could wear between an 8.5-9 street shoe, but now I am a solid 9. I decided to go with the W both because so many people referenced how narrow these run, and because my character shoes are a M and they are kind of tight. In the end, neither size worked for me. I thought the 8.5 was okay at first, but I quickly realized that as I walked, it rubbed the back of my slightly bigger foot too much. The 9 felt just a tad long, and the W gapped terribly in both shoes. I think I'm going to try a 9M just to see, but honestly I'm not a huge fan of the cut or fit of this shoe at this point. It was very long and skinny looking, and it made my foot look huge. The 1.5" heel also didn't help in that department. But in terms of sizing, I'd say that this shoe is true to street shoe size. ***Manhattan Xtreme: The Manhattan Xtreme, on the other hand, at 2.5" didn't really feel all that much higher to me (but I've been tapping in heels for a looooooooooong time, so maybe that's just me!) The cut was odd on this one as well. There was no toe cleavage, but rather than being rounded (like a classic character shoe), this vamp was more of a straight shape across the center. As the picture shows, it also curves up higher on the sides where the strap is placed. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the strap is super long and doesn't have nearly enough holes in it to fit properly. (Seriously, who was this shoe made for??) Also, because of the placement, I found that--when pulled it tightly enough--the buckle was actually placed near the center of my foot! I got this shoe in black, so I can't make a color comparison, but I wasn't a fan of how either of these shoes looked on. The higher heel made it slightly more flattering than the Jr. Footlight, but there was something bulky and clunky about it overall. Based on other reviews and the fit guides I consulted, I ordered the Manhattan Xtreme in a 9.5W. Once again, I found that the W was too wide for me, but to be fair, I have an average sized foot in the instep area, and it's really only the bunions that make it wider near the front. I found that this shoe caused a significant amount of pressure on my big toes from the top of the shoe (not the front), which also makes me wonder if these are cut narrower (from sole to top of vamp) than the Jr. Footlight. I tend to think that perhaps a 10M may be the way to go in this shoe, which is one full size larger than my street shoe. Overall, I found both of these shoes disappointing. I'm surprised, because Capezio has always made such beautiful, high-quality products. I'm going to give them both another shot and reorder in the other sizes (9M in Jr. Footlight and 10M in Manhattan Xtreme) just to see if it makes a difference in my overall opinion of this shoe, but there is really something off about both of them. If you're looking for a standard character style shoe for Broadway style tap, I'd probably suggest you look elsewhere. What ever happened to a clean cut character shoe style tap?? (*sigh*) Maybe they were trying to go more modern with these shoes? Whatever the case, I'm not a fan.

Good brand of shoe.
I started taking tap lessons and wanted a good quality shoe as I knew how important it was as I took tap dancing when I was younger for many years. I knew Capezio was one of the best Brands of dance shoes. They are good quality but seemed a little different than when I bought them years ago material wise. There was some looseness on the side of the shoe which I can’t quite figure out possibly because I should’ve gotten a half size smaller but I was afraid that would be too small. Overall a good shoe and the taps sound very good and clear.

Very nicely made
I just received the shoes and tried them on. I am usually a size 8 and I ordered a size 8. They fit really well, except the toe box is very tight. I think that after wearing them for awhile, they should stretch out a bit. I will also look into a gadget that may help with that stretching. I think if I go another half size bigger, the rest of the shoe will be too big. I'll add to this review after I have danced in them for a couple of weeks. But other than the tight toe box, the shoes are very well made and are otherwise very comfortable.

I ordered a half size smaller
At first I had ordered a 7 in these since I wear a street size 7. I ended up ordering a 6.5 to see if they fit any better, just because the 7's were a bit loose on the width and in the toe box, and I'm SO glad I ended up switching them out! So far, they've held up to tap practice every night at White Christmas rehearsal and the sound is great! I do love my flat shoes more for tapping in, but we had to have a heel for the show, and these are great for that! I do have one strap that frayed already, but I feel like that's more because of my fast costume changes than anything else. Overall, great shoe for the price!

So comfortable, perfect fit!
I had great toe surgery 6 years ago and never thought I would be able to wear 1 1/2 heel taps again but these are so comfortable with a roomy toe box for my limited movement great toe. So happy I tried them. I’ve danced for a few hours already, toe joint is a little sore but better than I expected. Can’t wait until they are fully broken in. I wear a size 8 1/2 to 9 walking shoe so I took a chance and ordered size 9 M and they fit like a glove. I have a regular to narrow foot.

TOO SMALL!
I didn't know WHAT to think when I ordered these - some reviews said too small, some said too big, and many said they fit just right - it's like a shoe store run by Goldilocks. The shoes were lovely and exactly what I wanted, especially the arch support - but too snug in the toes. YAY for Amazon's easy returns and refunds! I ordered my street size originally, a size 10, but I've just returned those and re-ordered a 10.5. There was NO way I could have danced in those shoes! I have to wonder if the difference is age, spread, width, things like that. I wear a size 10 but I've been pregnant 5 times, I'm 35, and my feet aren't as narrow as they used to be, maybe it's just that. I don't know, but for me, my street size wasn't big enough. I think the 10.5 will be perfect, though. I'll edit when I get them in a few days :) I would 100% recommend going up a half-size. A trifle too big is better than too tight, imo.

love this shoe!!!!!
These shoes are soooo cute!!! i couldn't wait to get them, cuz these are my first pair. they arrived alot earlier then i expected, too! i normally wear either size 8 to 8 1/2, and the sizing info was so confusing i wasn't sure what size to order. so i ordered size 8, just to be sure. when i got them i tried them on, and at first thought that they were too small, but after walking around in them for a little bit and getting my family's opinion, i realized that i wouldn't want any them bigger! the sizing info is so weird, you just have to guess and hope that you get the right size. but i would not recommend getting bigger than your original size shoe. the taps seemed a little bit quieter than other tap shoes i've heard, but i think that is bcuz i don't have the proper floor...im looking into portable tap floors, so i'll see. i've also heard that plywood works, but i tried it and it does NOT make a tap sound. its just a dull thud. but i'll have to keep looking. but overall i LOVE these shoes!!! not a waste of money

Nice shoe
I was told to size up from my regular street shoe size and I wish I had not. Fortunately there was an awesome return policy. The shoe itself was really nice and the shipping was fast.
