Works well with every paint brand I've used.
This will last me a LONG TIME. One of the best acrylic retarders I've ever used. You only need a few drops. Works to thin paint down also. Makes opaque into transparent.

Makes acrylics act like oil paints
I only gave four stars because the bottle came broken. Despite this the fluid works very well.

Extends "Open Time" - Highly Recommended - Detailed Review
Like many people, I read the reviews on this product before purchasing. My package arrived in good condition, unopened, with no damage. Everyone wants to know what the open time will be when they add a retarder. Here is your answer. I use a combination of flow acrylics and heavy body painted on canvas panels. For this painting my blending method was to mix equal amounts of retarder with flow white acrylic for the base coat (1:1). My environment was controlled with the A/C running. I put on an even coat of my base in the sky and water areas, then added color to blend. The open time at a 1:1 ratio was 45 minutes before beginning to get tacky. The paint remained tacky for 4 hours. I was able to begin working on the project with additional layers after 5 hours, however; I chose to wait until the following day. In the past I have used a mixture of Floetrol, water, and flow white acrylic base in a 2:1:1 mixture for blending. This combination gives an open time of about 5 minutes under the same environmental conditions. I highly recommend Sax True Flow Retarder for anyone wanting to extend the open time of their acrylics, especially if working on a large project where more time is needed. It works and with a little experimentation on mixture ratios I am sure fine tuning the open time can be achieved. Hope this helps.

Worse than water
I’m surprised by the large number of favorable reviews. Paint became stiff almost as quickly as just using water. It remained tacky longer than water but that just made it necessary to wait longer to paint again. It is also so watery it is a bit of a mess on tray. When trying to add more in effort to extend working time the extender broke apart the pigmant and sat like a puddle for a day.

Does SLOW-W Down Drying Time of Acrylics
This retarder does slow down drying time of acrylics. Does what it says. Gives U a little more time to blend paints

Buy this!!!!
This product literally changed my life!! I didn't know something like this existed, bought by mistake, the best mistake I've ever made!! This is amazing! It doesn't dry unless you mix paint with it... Keep a seperate cup to leave it in for multiple uses!! Also, in the cup, it doesn't pull paint in when adding/dipping paint filled brush in it, stays clear and wet indefinately in open air. AMAZING PRODUCT!!!!!!

I'll take a pint
My first drying retarder, purchased to extend the drying time of flesh colored paint for painting miniatures, is an excellent buy. Interesting how the retarders on the market can range from paste in a tube - to gel - to this liquid, and offered in quantities as small as 17 ml for around 6 dollars, to the Sax offering, which contains 473 ml and purchased for around 9 dollars. And it really does what it is suppose to do, which is to prevent the filming over of the acrylic paint due to rapid drying. When painting the face of a miniature, especially a female face, the filmed over paint picked up by the brush and applied leaves a ruddy complexion, which is not very flattering. The extended drying time gives the modeler an opportunity to smooth over the entire face of a miniature, then blend different shades together to give highlights. Every now and then, I find a product that is a "how did I model without it" type product. The Woodland Scenics Scenic Cement is one of those products. This Sax retarder is another.

Watery and difficult
It’s like water… it also waters down paint and turns them transparent… really difficult to use, will have to use a spray bottle or a dropper. oh well…. didn’t know all retarders weren’t the same.

Regular
