Teaching Fact Families
Rather than learning math facts through drill and practice flashcards, this is a different method for teaching the fact 'families'. Each child learns differently. This concept of teaching kids to look at the entire fact, rather than just the sum is better for some kids. This it not a 'toy', but kids do have fun with it. My daughter has toted it around back and forth in her backpack. It is durable. The sound can be on or off. (I like that feature.) I also love the different levels it provides. It has provided my daughter with a mental math warm up before she takes her timed math tests in school. I need to stress that this is for school-age children. This is similar to a child learning flashcards. It isn't a 'fun', interactive, points, next level game/toy. Ideas for this item's use: -have a child use this when you can not practice math flash cards with them; -have teachers use it as a learning station during school; -use with older individuals with stroke/dementia; -great mind exercise. ***UPDATE***: I keep seeing this minute math device get poor reviews. I use these so much with kids in school that I thought I could help clarify some things. (1) This is not a toy. It is a way for kids to practice their facts in a different way other than flashcards. In fact, think of these like flash cards. You wouldn't expect kids to be motivated to use them or even think they are fun. This is just a different means of practice. (2) The noise does go off. Hold the ON button down 1/2 way. It will blink quickly indicating the sound is off. It truly is in the instructions. (3) Fact Families or Triangle Math is just another way for kids to learn routine math skills. Some kids learn in a rote manner, where they learn all their multiplication facts and then their division facts. Most the time these kids can carry that over to other areas of math. Some kids need a more global approach. Teaching kids fact families sometimes helps kids see a bigger picture of how all the facts are connected. (4) This is called MINUTE math. It is designed to go quickly just like the timed tests the kids have to take in school. Many classrooms still do the quick 1-2 minute math drill test at the beginning of the day. This is just a way for some kids to warm-up or get used to that way of doing math. (5) Your child may be gifted or advanced. However, please don't complain if your child is younger than the recommended age for this device. Would you also complain about flash cards being to boring? SUMMARY: This is simply another means for a child to learn. I use these as a station all the time because a child can do it independently. I hope this helps answer some of the questions/concerns about the device. I also hope this helps you make an informed decision if this is exactly what you are wanting to purchase for your child.

We work with the triangular flash cards and this item seemed to be a great tool for self teaching time
I read multiple reviews before ordering this product as I wanted a device to teach my grandsons their 'fact family numbers'. We work with the triangular flash cards and this item seemed to be a great tool for self teaching time. Not so. For one simple reason: You can turn the timing feature off but all that does is make it possible for you to do as many problems as you would like---not being restricted to just the amount you can complete in 60 seconds. It does NOT keep each problem on the device for a longer period of time so budding math students can think through the fact family and come up with the right missing digit. It only works in FLASH mode----expecting quick responses and not pondering thoughts. Useless unless one is looking for a fast quiz for known facts. Not good for LEARNING those facts. Still debating returning it as it may be of some use in the future but not helpful now with a 1st and 2nd grader still learning the basic adding and subtracting combos. I'm wondering if they intentionally leave the clarity of what 'turning off timing mode' really means off their product description. In my mind when it says you can 'turn off the timing mode', it means you can turn off the necessity for speed in the problem solving, not just the time limit.

Fun way to practice math!
I got this for my school aged children (ages 6-12). The different levels allow everyone to play at their own ability. It is fun to challenge one another to see who can get the most in the timed games; it is excellent practice for mastering basic math facts for the younger kiddos (or the older kiddos who might still struggle). I've even found myself challenging my kids to a game here and there! The sounds can get a bit annoying, but they can also be disabled so it would be fun in a waiting room or other public place without being a nuisance. Get one of these! They're so fun!

Eeehhh
It doesn’t allow much time to figure out the problem, by the time the kids figure it out it’s moved on to the next problem. If you’re looking for speed drills this could be good but probably not for beginners. It’s also loud but does have the option to mute.

Not quite what I had hoped for
I was at first surprised by how small this item was. That would have been okay, but it advertises that it teaches addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. This is true in part, but in an indirect way. There are two settings addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. There are three displays and the top one is the answer. Problems are presented by filling in two of the three displays on the device. If the bottom two displays are filled in, you are doing addition or multiplication. If one of the bottom two are left blank, you end up doing subtraction or division. These are mixed together and vary with the level that you specify. You cannot chose to do subtraction only or division only, they come randomly with their counterpart (addition/subtraction and multiplication/division). My other disappointment is that I did not read/understand that this is a timed activity and for early users, can be very frustrating as it provides the answer and goes on to the next problem irrespective of whether the person has completed the problem. You cannot adjust the timing or turn it off. Basically for our daughter who needs lots of practice to learn something and is not yet fast at doing these problems, this device is not helpful.

Old School Math Fun
Our Elf on the Shelf brought this (I know, our Elf sucks) and my first grader hates this! She says it's so stressful and she just does not understand it. Which is why I love it- once she starts to really conceptualize math facts and fact families, I think she will enjoy playing the game. I do think she'd like it more if it was an app or on her ipad but I like it because it's not and a little more old school- it's like the word processor version of flash cards. I will post an update later in the school year but as of now- it's a great tool and if your little one is self-motivated (mine is only motivated for candy and technology) they will like it!

Speed needs to be adjustable
My daughter was so excited! But it’s just TOO Fl fast and I can’t find a way to slow it down l, she doesn’t have time to find the buttons to type the answer in before it’s beeping and moving on. She is in grade one and above average at math...she knows the answers relatively quick but it’s just too fast even for me sometimes...

Great idea but a bit confusing to use
Solid to use and a great idea - works in the same way as part-whole models. But the setup isn’t very instinctive - setting levels etc - so you have to refer to manual. Reminds me a bit of trying to set the date on old school digital watches.

As described
My son is 10 with special needs and has been using this for a few days now. It is an okay tool for helping with math skills.

Nice and simple to use
I bought this to use in the classroom for individual number skills practice in a lower set in a Secondary school and it's very good for that purpose, being simple and intuitive to use. There are two settings; the two bottom windows either add up to or are factors of the top window. The handy thing about this arrangement is that it instantly shows the relationship between operations and their inverses. You can choose level and number range and so it can be tailored to individual needs - lots of correct answers with gradual increasing difficulty - perfect! The only thing that would make it better would be an option to mute the sound and show correct answers in a visual way instead/as well. It's not too noisy, but could be a distraction if used by a pupil in class when others are doing different activity.

Defective and poor design
Terrible overall. The disable timer function was defective on my unit. The instructions were missing details on the mute function and I had to download an updated copy on line. There is no volume control (except mute) and the sound is annoying when on. Triangular keypad does not reflect any standard keypad and is not intuitive for younger children. The triangular equation format is also not intuitive. Packaging is huge for a small unit. Suspect this was designed by trilaterally based aliens with no sense of hearing or by a nacho chip of substandard ability.
