Just like the original !
Just like the first one I bought in 1966.

Not as good as they used to be. Trim carpenter since 1990.
While this rule will certainly do what it's supposed to, the quality of materials and execution are NOT what they used to be. The brass slide has almost no resistance to retracting, which means that inside measurements have to be made with extra attention. Also, the brass joints in the rule are made differently than they used to be, there's a hole in the stick at every joint. They used to have brass caps that locked everything together. In addition, when the fuel is folded, the sticks don't line up flush. Not a big deal, but it's pretty cheesy. And the sticks aren't finished the way they used to be. There used to be a smooth chamfer on the edges, now it feels like I'm going to get splinters on the sharp corners. I used to love these rules, bought quite a few at Sears back in the day. Lufkin was THE NAME to buy for this item. I'm sure it'll be okay, but I'm going to start looking for a different brand. I don't think this one will last as long as the old style. Disappointed.

Apex: raise the price and raise the bar on GD&T / fit and finish
Fit and finish were a bit sloppy. It could stand some extra bench work, even if that means a couple of extra dollars on the price tag. A few of the hinges only open one direction and required some attention with a needle oiler to be functional. I suggest filing a carpenter's pencil over top of the joints to produce some graphite shavings and working them into the hinges; this should provide some long-lasting lubrication for these joints. Still, having to work on a new tool to make it acceptable for pro use is a little sad, especially from (what used to be) Lufkin, a company with such a rich legacy. This thing really needs a sleeve of some sort to protect it in the toolbox. I could see myself breaking it without trying very hard. Still, all that aside, it was still a good buy for the money.

Sturdy joints and durable extender, good fit and finish.
Received brand new, and will be put to use next week. This has very tight joints and firmly clicks open and closed. The extender has a slight curve to it, which creates a minimal amount of friction, which helps keep it in place. The extender does not freely or inadvertently move, it takes a minimal amount of effort to extend/retract. The extender is NOT plastic, it is brass with a black coating on the back/inside. I scraped off a bit of the black coating material to expose the brass beneath. I hate to speculate, but I suspect the black coating might help to keep the tight fit of the extender. The rule has 1/16" increments (extender also). I fully opened the rule and extender, and compared it to a Stanley tape measure - the rule appears to be exactly accurate to the tape measure.

Traditional rule.
I am have been self teaching myself woodworking for several years. Some of the articles I have read and some of the videos I have watched have voiced a preference for the folding rule over a tape measure. But, I was happy with my tape measures and metal rules I was using. I recently signed up for a hand tool class with a well known instructor/creator of furniture . This folding rule was on his suggested tool list. So, I will keep an open mind and give it a try. However, I suspect that in a craft with such a long history as woodworking, that tradition may have an influence on some woodworker's preference. One advantage with this rule is the sliding depth gauge. You won't find that on a tape measure and I have used it several times already, Perhaps, in time, I will become as attached to this thing as my mentors are.

Could be better quality
A little disappointed in the quality. Not as good as the quality of the one I bought as a apprentice back in the ‘70s, which I still use but no longer has the markings from zero to 6 inches on the outside side of the first section of the ruler.

not like the old ones
I spent 20 years in the construction industry with a rule like this that I bought in the 70s. Then used it around the house and workshop for another 20. This one could not carry that one's jock strap. The slide binds and the pivot joints bind already. I am sure will be toast way before the rest of it is worn out, which if I am correct will be about 1/10 as long as the last one I owned.

False advertisement!!
It is described " The wood rule is marked on both the sides and edges." So I bought. It's hard to see in the picture here. I wanted a one marked on the edges. It has arrived today and sure no measurement marked on the edges! Be aware!
