Small enough training collar for my 8 and 9 lb dogs

I bought the 7-9 inch RC Pet brand training collar. Paying $12 plus seemed pricy but considering that I could NOT find anywhere online or in store small enough measurements to fit my Dachshund/Rat Terrier mix (8 lb) and my Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix (9 lb). At first glance, I was not impressed with what $12 bought me, thin material, light chain, collar is not as thick as the collars they have on from Petco (but those collars are 10 inches at smallest and are big enough for them to slip out of). I tried the training collar on both of my dogs for a total of 8 times (I take them to go potty with a leash and then go for a 20 minute walk). So far, I really like it. The thin material seems sturdy. The stitching is well done. Adjusting the collar to fit over the head and then readjusting to fit the neck, then adjusting the collar to take off was not AS easy as I wanted it to be but still pretty simple with a few extra seconds to a minute total of adjustment time. Overall, it's a good martingale training collar (chain and material). The only thing I didn't like that made the adjusting time consuming is the rubber RC Pets logo that is stitched onto the collar. You have to work the rubber in and out of the plastic clip. I was able to unstitch it. Much easier to adjust! I don't know about any discoloration from the chain transferring to my pets fur. I use the collars for going out. Aslo, I measured the width of the collar. It's really 5/8 not 3/4. Not like that makes a big difference but the measuring is slightly off. I just bought a second collar (7-9 inch) now that I know this collar fits both my pets well. UPDATED: First collar that I ordered came in a day early. Second collar I ordered on a Friday and was supposed to be delivered the following Friday. It came in 2 days earlier. Yes. I did unstitch the RC Pets logo for easier, smooth adjusting.

My Favorite Collar

I've been using this collar for over a year now and love it. It's still in great condition and keeps my dogs from slipping out.

Pretty fabric, strong chain--but too much chain.

This is a nice collar that can adjust over several inches to fit the dog. Since I foster dogs, it will be handy to have a collar that's so easily adjustable. The chain part is very thick and lengthy and thus detracts in appearance from the attractive burnt orange pattern Bracken pattern of the collar (I measured my dog according to the manufacturer's guidelines and purchased a size large). I feel this martingale style collar would be much more attractive the loop in front were made of the same fabric as the rest of the collar, instead of a chain, because then the pretty fabric would have gone all the way around the dog's neck instead of chopping off where the chain starts. So it's functional but not nearly as attractive as it could be.

Nice collar but the chain will discolor white fur

This is a nice product. It's made well and is really sturdy. I got a medium for a 14" neck & was concerned it might not be big enough, but it had more than enough room to cinch it up to not slip off his head and still have enough slack for a correction. My only complaint is that the chain hangs at the front of my Boston Terrier's neck when not on the leash. This made contact with his white fur and turned it a dirty dark gray. If your dog has dark fur this shouldn't be noticeable. If your dog has thick fur this collar would be easy to use as you don't have to fight the fur to open and close the clasp.

Stylish & Functional

I have to use these types of collars b/c my dog's necks are larger than their heads, allowing conventional collars to slip right off. They can get out of every harness I've bought (I gave up after purchasing 5 different ones) too. All the Martingale collars at the stores are solid colored with very thick or very thin nylon bands. This is the perfect width for my 6 & 11 lb dogs, and I love the pattern selections. I used to use a nylon slip collar on my smallest dog, and she startled me a few times when I didn't hear her entering the room. There is a barely audible tinkling sound that the chain makes when they're running around, but it's not bothersome like tags clinking together. My husband can't even hear it. They seem very sturdy and well made. I found out these wash easily and well in the washing machine. I already ordered different patterns b/c i love these so much!

Cute, soft, true to size, and well-priced Martingale collar

Our 12 year old dog Smiley is generally great on walks, but with all the sights, sounds, and smells of the city to distract her (along with other dogs and dog owners who do stupid things like walk their dogs off leash or allow their dogs to walk up to others unannounced) she sometimes need a small correction. Over the years we have tried a plain fabric collar, a chain training collar, an all-fabric martingale, and this style - fabric with the chain for corrections. This style works best for us. This collar is cute and soft, working well without any seasoning or wearing-in time. The price was great, the sizing true, and the pattern in beautiful. I will definitely buy this collar again and recommend it wholeheartedly.

Good collar but needs a clasp

I love this collar! It was great quality; the only thing I would change would be to make it with a clasp. When I bought the first one for my puppy, the collar fit fine around her neck; when it started getting a little small, I could not take it off to put the next larger size on b/c it would not fit over her wider head and I had to cut it off thus making it unusable for another puppy. I would advise buying the next size up that you think you need.

Love this collar!

This is a wonderful and easy to use collar. It can stay clipped to a leash and slipped over your dog's head, and is easily removed once your training and/or walk is complete. It appears both well made and sturdy, the materials used are substantial and I think it will hold up for a long time. I followed the measurement instructions exactly when I ordered. Upon arrival, I initially thought this would be too small for my dog because it's winter and his fur is extra full, but after trying it on my Pomeranian and using it on a walk, I realized it was, in fact, a perfect fit and I was glad I followed the instructions and didn't go up a size. Look closely and you'll notice that the camo print is comprised of doggie paw prints. If you choose this collar, make sure to get the matching leash! It's adorable.

I love these collars

I love these collars. I have three different sized dogs, the only one I had to size down on was the little one who measured 14. The large was too big he looked like an Italian stallion with the chains hanging around his neck. He now looks like he’s wearing a dog collar. They don’t need to be worn tightly to be effective. My only complaint is the interior gets jagged and sharp, the part that sits on the dogs neck. But if worn loose enough it won’t irritate their skin. They look great. I bought different plaids for all three. Strong and sturdy material. Not at all likely to break and my puppy is 75 pounds of crazy girl, and jumps like a jack rabbit. I would recommend these to everyone

Only rating a 2 because it’s listed as the wrong size

Amazing collars; I only ever use RC Pets Martingale Collars with my Wolfdogs. But these are listed as a medium. They are smalls. Got two (keeping for future puppies) but was really hoping for the medium size.

Need to train your stubborn fur baby? This works

I have a 7year old stubborn corgi who I now have to train to listen. To sit when I ask him and to stay until I release him. And most importantly. Stop lunging at dogs he decides he doesn’t like. This collar recommended by my CKC certified trainer and it works amazing.

Not for floppy ear dogs

I would not recommend this collar if your dog has floppy ears. I have a Cavalier King Charles and it was hard to remove with his ears. I ended up getting a Martingale with a buckle as it is easier to put on and remove.

pretty but chain is poor quality

I have found the martingale collar effective but at this point I think I am going back to trying a gentle leader, my dog pulls and there isn't much difference between choking herself on a flat collar vs the martingale if she is committed to pulling. the chain on this particular collar catches and rarely provides a good snap, it also turns my dogs neck fur black which does not come out.
