Solution
These are a potential solution to falling windows. You'll have to figure out whether one or two should be applied, and you have to take off the molding in order to pull out the window and insert them. Do not get the ones the ones designed to be nailed into the bottom or top of the window as they do not work

Inexpensive safety
My daughter was saving up for a laptop. But had to use $600 to pay the vet bill! Her poor baby kitty hurt his paw! Our old window slammed down on him in the middle of the night. I thought the window was safe, but I didn’t know, now I know! I’m mad at myself for not getting these before our kitty hurt his paw! (he’s fine now, but I feel awful for him!) That loose old window accident could have been avoided easily and at little cost. This was the solution

Might work for light windows
The product is what it says it is. However, the manufacturer should, but does not, state the weight range of the sash and the spacing between sash & frame these are intended to work with. My sashes are 12lbs each and there’s a varying amount of space between sash & frame of 3/8-1/2” (very old house & window). There’s not enough overlap of travel on the frame so I put two of these on each sash & they initially did nothing. I added varying thicknesses of wood pieces between the product & sash to increase friction and that works to varying degrees but not smoothly. I’ve given up on trying to use this product and ordered clock-spring type sidemount sash balancers for this application. The provided nails are brittle crap, the head broke off the first one I put in, I suggest using similar nails that you trust.

These little gizmos work great in my 1928 wood windows
These little gizmos work great in my 1928 wood windows. They do require two nails that come in the package. I only had to use one sash spring on each window and they stay in place and aren't hard to open and close. I nailed the gizmo to the window sash and not to the frame. I was concerned that they might scratch the frame as the window goes up and down but that has not happened. I have installed them on both painted and stained window frames. To replace my broken sash ropes would have required removing all of the the window trim as there is no other way to access the weight pockets. This was WAY easier and less mess. On some windows I only had to remove the stop on one side of the window in order to remove the sash. I highly recommend this product.
