Best way to rekey locks
I needed to rekey the 5 locks at my house. I contacted a locksmith and they said it would cost at least $130 and would be more depending on the type of locks. I have rekeyed locks before but didn't have tools for the Schlage locks and I didn't have any keys that I could use to change the locks to. For about $13, I was able to rekey all of my locks. There are enough pins to rekey 6 locks and the pins are color coded to make it easier to use. The instructions were pretty good and there is a video to show you how to do the job. Unfortunately, the first lock I did was a little bit different than the instructions covered. The tailpiece - part that goes through the door - didn't come off. Then when I was pushing the lock cylinder out, it hung up on something and I ended up with all the springs and pins going all over the place. I recommend looking for a video online before trying to put the springs back in. I spent a lot of time trying to put it back together and ended up messing up the springs. The other 4 locks were like the ones in the instructions and I was more careful about pushing the lock cylinder out. I was able to quickly rekey the 4 locks. I found a video online that showed how to replace the springs and was able to get the lock rekeyed. I would recommend this kit if you need to rekey your locks.

Works Well
This item did what I needed - change key fit of a Schlage lock (x2). There are 2 problems with the item and instructions in my opinion. it is designed and described that one should use the parts to fit a lock to the keys provided. I wanted to change the lock to use a key I already had. The instructions aren't particularly clear for this use but it worked with some changes to the procedure description. The other issue is that once the cylinder is slid in to keep the tumblers in place, one has to be careful not to let any tumbler fall down. While that is clear enough, it is not so easy to accomplish. It would help if there were a stop or lock to keep the push in cylinder in place while the other operations are done (maybe magnetically?). At any rate, the tumblers came out because I let the cylinder move. I was able to get things back together and then did it again (my fault). In the end I was successful but one does have to be careful and modify directions slightly if you want to use your own key.

Worked but not to re-key a lock for a key you already have.
I was able to use the tools included to get the lock taken apart. That's a plus. One tip though, I had to cut a little ramp on the leading edge of the plastic tube so that the spring loaded pins could float up onto the tube. So ease of use scored low. The kit comes with 3 keys. Those keys don't have deep cuts in them, so the short pins that they provided will work. My use case is for a new lock. So I bought a new lock from the store and I wanted to re-key the new lock to my existing key. My existing key had deeper cuts in it. Nothing non-standard about my key. The kit does not come with pins long enough to get even one new lock working with my old key. I see that after reading this product description, they told me it wouldn't work for my use case. So adjusting to 4 stars instead of 1 star that I initially had at the start of this review.

Can't believe how easy it was, but there's a caveat on the instructions
Everything was very straight-forward except for the part that says to turn the key 1/8 of a turn when removing the cylinder plug. This leaves the slot in the plug follower too close to the "top pins" and can let them fall out. There is no good reason not to turn the key a full 1/4 turn. Fortunately I had an extra lock that I was pulling out of service so that supplied an extra cylinder housing that I could use after the top pins fell out of the first cylinder housing that I tried to work on. Other than that, this is a really cool kit and it worked fabulously. Didn't bother with the tweezers though, my fingers worked better for installing the new pins. Good idea to put down a paper towel to hold the pins, otherwise they will roll farther than you want and could be difficult to find if they fall off the table. Peeling the surface layer from a strip of cardboard works as well since it exposes the corrugations to put the pins in while you're working with them and you can align multiple rows of the colored pins for doing multiple locks.

I didn't realize i could rekey my own lock!!! so easy (relatively)
It was cheaper for me to rekey my lock than I expected! I had bought the kit to get the tool to extract the cylinder, so that I could bring it to a locksmith for rekeying. (Thinking I would save the $ by avoiding a house call). However, the instructions were so clear, that i ended up rekeying it myself. (!!!) and saved a bunch of money. I liked the instruction video, since when I accidently let one of the pins slip out while try to push the core into the cylinder, i remembered him saying, "don't worry, if they come out you just put them back in" so calmly like it was easy! I would have just taken it to a locksmith at that point if I didn't remember him saying that. I did let some pins fly out and have to look for the springs, so it took me a bit more time to do than probably the average bear, but remarkably easy once all was said and done. Putting the pin and spring back in when I made a mistake was challenging - required me to clean my glasses, get a tweezers and a tiny screwdriver to push it in - but easy like butter once I got it in :). Best part was the sense of accomplishment The keys are a bit cheap maybe? in terms of how they slide in (I have some lubricant on order so that may make a difference), but overall excellent kit!!!! excellent instrucitons Would buy again definitely I would say to read the instructions, in addition to the video, as there is more information in there. Especially if you don't have the exact model of lock that is in the video, but that IS represented in the instructions

It's a lie - don't buy
Short answer - I regret buying this lock 1. I read the reviews and see that many of the sets have the same key. There is also questionable security in that they know my address and the key they sent. 2. I took the new pins and measured them with calipers. They bear no resemblance to the Schlage bitting tolerances. This makes me nervous that it's not well controlled. This matches some of the comments below that some of the pins are too long and they had to file them down to fit properly. 3. The tweezers are practically useless. 4. The only useful part of it is the follower tool, which is also badly made. My plan is to use the original keying, then take the pins that I want, file them down, and manually rekey the other lock to match the first. It would have been cheaper to just take the locks in and pay a locksmith to match one of the key sets.

The bad reviews on this product appear to be misunderstandings this kit is a fantastic deal.
This is a True Schlage rekey kit. There are enough pins to re-key 6 locks the tools it comes with are cheap but can do the job. It did not come in the shown package, that's no big deal. The instructions are clear and precise. You may have read the other reviews and are now unsure about purchasing, let me assure you that you can't open a lock with a matchstick, with this kit or any other kit, my hypothesis on that comment is that he removed the Springs and the bible pins or his bible pins and springs are damaged that would let anything open the lock. This kit only replaces the key pins there are no bible pins or springs because to change a key all you need to do is replace the key pins. If your re-keying a lock without a key you will need to pick the lock in order to gut it. This is a remarkable deal and if you can follow the instructions then you can re-key your locks. I'm not aa professional locksmith but I have recently started lockpicking as a hobby and I bought 200.00 in Schlage Training locks I wanted the c-clip removal tool and I want to re-key my door at some point. I have to remove the lock from a doorknob for that I needed the tools and the instructions in this kit. I have learned enough about locks to tell you with confidence that this kit is genuine and that it's truly worth the money. Feel free to ask me questions and I will answer them. Photo 1 is some of the pins with a shot of my cutaway and the core the 2nd picture you can now see the colour pins in the core and you can see the cutaway bible that contains the pins and springs, the 3rd picture shows you 2 Mortise locks, 1 is pinned with its original key the other is pinned with this kit you and you can tell which is which the colour pins are in the lock with 3 keys and it is open the brass part shows where the pins line up so when the key aligns with it and then you can remove the key, in any other positions it's opening it. I didn't have to modify anything to make this work The two mortise locks cost around 15$ here on Amazon. There is a paper in the package that tells you which colour pin goes where. These are SC1 Schlage keys

Cost effective
I rekeyed 6 locks for 20 bucks, the cheapest quote I got was for 175 plus taxes for rekeying and got it done myself for lot cheaper, rekeying the first one took me 25-30 min as I had no clue how to do it but once I did the first one learned how to did the rest 6 locks 5 min each. Very good value for money and good product, shld know how to do it no rocket science behind it just use your Common sense!!

Makes it easy to pretend you are a professional.
This is a great product. Everything you need to re-key a Schlage lock. I have re-keyed several now using this set, and once you get used to it, it is really easy. Takes me about 5 minutes per lock now. The parts provided are, I'm sure, pretty well what a professional has. I'm reasonably handy and this kit is just the thing. If you have never seen this kind of thing before, you might get frustrated. Read and understand the directions - being imprecise leads to frustration. However, the cost of a new lock is not that much compared to a locksmith, so even if/when you get it wrong you're likely not out that much. And even when you get it wrong and all the tumblers that should not come out do, it is not impossible to repair following the instructions provided. Use this kit in a well lit area, with your glasses already on, sitting in a stable position so that you can rest both arms against and above a work surface, and in an area where tiny, little bits flying in all directions will be easily retrieved. This kit does not provide you with the extra parts you would need if you lose any, such as springs and pins. I've purchase two of these sets now, and the tumblers from the second set were the same as the first, so the second set could be used to re-key more locks to the same key as the first set. Would not be surprised if this is intentional. I will be buying more because re-keying a house can now be a regular affair - just like changing a password.
